On The Relationship Between Stomatal Characters And Atmospheric Co2, C. D. Reid, H. Maherali, H. B. Johnson, S. D. Smith, S. D. Wullschleger, R. B. Jackson

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Leaf stomatal characters influence the response of terrestrial evapotranspiration to climate change and are used as proxies for the reconstruction of past atmospheric [CO2]. We examined the phenotypic response of stomatal index (SI), density (SD) and aperture (AP) to rising atmospheric CO2 in 15 species after four years exposure to a field CO2 gradient (200 to 550 μmol mol−1 atmospheric [CO2]) or at three Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) sites. Along the CO2 gradient, SI and SD showed no evidence of a decline to increasing [CO2], while AP decreased slightly. There was no significant change in SI, SD or AP …

Law, Literature, And Libel: Victorian Censorship Of Dirty Filthy Books On Birth Control, Kristin (Brandser) Kalsem Jan 2003

Law, Literature, And Libel: Victorian Censorship Of Dirty Filthy Books On Birth Control, Kristin (Brandser) Kalsem

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This article presents a case study of the feminist jurisprudence performed by three early birth control advocates: Annie Besant, Jane Hume Clapperton, and Marie Stopes. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the subject of birth control was so taboo that serious efforts were made to keep John Stuart Mill from being buried in Westminster Abbey because of his sympathies with the idea of family limitation. The threat of being charged with obscenity and immorality, whether in a legal indictment, in a literary review, or in the court of public opinion, effectively silenced much public discourse on this important …

The Interaction Of The Ada, The Fmla, And Workers' Compensation: Why Can't We Be Friends?, S. Elizabeth Malloy

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Article addresses some of the issues that arise when an employee injured at work qualifies for leave under the ADA, the FMLA and workers' compensation statutes. Part II of the Article provides a brief overview of these
three statutory schemes, focusing on the provisions, which define employee and employer qualification and the rights and responsibilities surrounding leave due to a work-related injury. Part III examines how the courts have resolved some of the overlapping and conflicting provisions contained in these statutes. This section particularly focuses on how the courts address employer obligations under all three statutes when an employee …

No. 11: Regionalizing International Migration: Lessons For Sadc, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams Jan 2003

No. 11: Regionalizing International Migration: Lessons For Sadc, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams

Southern African Migration Programme

Research on unauthorised migration to South Africa has addressed a range of issues surrounding the effects of current immigration policy on migrants, and the impact migrants have on South Africa’s society and economy (DHA 1997: section 1.4.6). One finding that is particularly relevant to a discussion of regional labour migration regimes is that current South African immigration policy does not account for labour migrants who retain a social and domestic base in their countries of origin. Another is that most unauthorised migrants are temporary or contract workers who seek employment in industries—such as construction—that depend increasingly on this kind of …

Invisible Lives: A Qualitative Study Of 61 Parents Receiving Child Protective Services (Summary Report), Sarah Maiter Jan 2003

Invisible Lives: A Qualitative Study Of 61 Parents Receiving Child Protective Services (Summary Report), Sarah Maiter

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Involvement with child protective services (CPS) may be expected to be a stressful experience for parents. Usually their involvement is involuntary, initiated because someone believes they are not caring adequately for their children: this tells them that the community, or someone in the community, does not approve of them as parents. As families who become involved with CPS tend to be economically deprived and socially marginalized, they may view agency intervention as one more signs that they are not accepted by their community; moreover it brings the fear of losing their children, perhaps forever. In this context, it is especially …

Social Phobia : Examining The Empirical Shortcomings Of The Most Prevalent Anxiety Disorder, Randall P. Schultz Jan 2003

Social Phobia : Examining The Empirical Shortcomings Of The Most Prevalent Anxiety Disorder, Randall P. Schultz

Graduate Research Papers

Social phobia, which is notably the fear of being negatively evaluated, humiliated, or embarrassed by others in social situations, has become the most prevalent anxiety disorder and the third most diagnosed mental disorder in the nation (Orsillo & Hammond, 2001). Although social phobia is no longer considered to be the "neglected" anxiety disorder (Liebowitz, Gorman, Fyer, & Klein, 1987), it remains an often undertreated, misunderstood, and understudied anxiety disorder (Cuthbert, 2002). The purpose of this paper is to examine the numerous discrepancies and shortcomings within social phobia literature in regards to defining, diagnosing, measuring, and treating social phobia. Recommendations are …

Implementation Of Simulation Software Packages For Healthcare Scheduling, Sang M. Lee, Arben A. Asllani Jan 2003

Implementation Of Simulation Software Packages For Healthcare Scheduling, Sang M. Lee, Arben A. Asllani

Journal of International Information Management

Simulation methodology is considered an effective decision making tool in the process of patient scheduling in healthcare centers. In spite of the large number of simulation software packages that are commercially available, operation researches still are facing difficulties to implement simulation models in healthcare centers. In many cases, healthcare schedulers must spend extra efforts trying to mold scheduling requirements to conform to the features of the package. In this paper, we offer a systematic approach that can be used by practitioners to successfully adopt the available software simulation packages, develop simulation models, and transform their findings into practical scheduling rules. …
