Rifn-Gamma-Mediated Growth Suppression Of Platinum-Sensitive And -Resistant Ovarian Tumor Cell Lines Not Dependent Upon Arginase Inhibition, Bohuslav Melichar, Wei Hu, Rebecca Patenia, Karolina Melicharová, Stacie T Gallardo, Ralph Freedman

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Arginine metabolism in tumor cell lines can be influenced by various cytokines, including recombinant human interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma), a cytokine that shows promising clinical activity in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). METHODS: We examined EOC cell lines for the expression of arginase in an enzymatic assay and for transcripts of arginase I and II, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The effects of rIFN-gamma on arginase activity and on tumor cell growth inhibition were determined by measuring [3H]thymidine uptake. RESULTS: Elevated arginase activity was detected in 5 of 8 tumor cell lines, and …

The Validity And Reliability Of The Motion Sensitivity Test, Faith W. Akin, Mary Jo Davenport Sep 2003

The Validity And Reliability Of The Motion Sensitivity Test, Faith W. Akin, Mary Jo Davenport

ETSU Faculty Works

The Motion Sensitivity Test (MST) is a clinical protocol designed to measure motion-provoked dizziness during a series of 16 quick changes to head or body positions. The MST has been used as a guide for developing an exercise program for patients with motion-provoked dizziness and as a treatment outcome measure to monitor the effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation therapy. This study determined validity, test-retest reliability, and interrater reliability of the MST. Fifteen individuals with motion-provoked dizziness and ten control individuals were tested during sessions occurring 90 min and/or 24 hr after baseline testing. The MST was found to be reliable across …

Explaining Volunteering In Old Age : A Social Reinforcement Perspective, Tsz Wai Lau Sep 2003

Explaining Volunteering In Old Age : A Social Reinforcement Perspective, Tsz Wai Lau

Lingnan Theses

Volunteering has been widely accepted as potentially a very good means to engage older persons and to maximize their contribution to society. There is a need to understand the entire process of volunteering, the reasons that motivate older persons to participate in volunteer services and activities and to appreciate why committed elderly volunteers continue to involve themselves in volunteering. The present study attempts to explore the possible motivational and sustainable aspects in the process of volunteering guided by a social reinforcement perspective. It further aims to propose an explanatory model for the initiation and sustainability of volunteering involving older persons …

Generational Equity, Generational Interdependence, And The Framing Of The Debate Over Social Security Reform, John B. Williamson, Tay K. Mcnamara, Stephanie A. Howling

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article analyzes the differences between the generational equity and generational interdependence conceptual packages used to frame arguments in the debate over policies such as Social Security reform. It begins with a history of the generational equity debate. This is followed by an analysis of the assumptions, values, and beliefs that inform each of these two ideological frames. It presents an analysis of why the generational equity frame has dominated the debate and highlights some of the limitations of this perspective.

Assessment Of Students' Motivation To Use Computer Tools In A Web -Enhanced Counseling Course, Ying-Ying Kuo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Increasing numbers of professional counseling educators recognize the importance of information technology in counselor education, but the majority of members in the counseling community still lack interest in using computer tools for their professional development. How to motivate them to acquire these necessary skills is a problem in counselor education. This study provided a motivating web-based instructional (WBI) design for a web-enhanced course and examined counseling students' motivation to use computer tools in the course. It focused on four research questions that examined (1) how students' use of computers changed; (2) the impact of web-based instructional (WBI) features on their …

Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioners’ Practices O F Assessment For The State O F Thriving Among Community-Based Elders, Judy Labonte

MSN Research Projects

The increasing life span of people within the developed world may produce major health problems for the elder. These health problems lead to premature declines in function and cognition. Many healthcare professionals do not recognize these declines until the need for institutionalized care is urgent. Research has demonstrated that healthcare professionals either fail to recognize or address these declines, contributing to poor outcomes for the elder and the exponential rise in healthcare expenses o f the Medicare and Medicaid funds. This exploratory, descriptive study was designed to examine the level of assessment by primary care family nurse practitioners (FNPs) for …
