Service Learning Among University Students Through Working With South Asian Children, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Meng Soi, Florence Fong, Wing No, Helen Lau

OSL Journal / Paper Series 論文

The benefits of service learning for the intellectual and personal development of students have been discussed in the past few decades. Jacoby (1996) defines service learning as, “a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development”. The idea of using a service-learning approach in teaching curricula is “far from new” (Gray et al, 2000) and the scope of it has been expanding substantially in tertiary education overseas, though it is still not pervasive in Hong Kong. The Lingnan Angels is …

The Meaning Of Care For Older Chinese Caregivers : An Exploratory Model Of Positive Caring, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, K. M., Carmen Ng, C. K., Liliane Chan, David Rosser Phillips

APIAS Working Paper 工作論文

Caring is often a highly personalized and individual activity. Through in-depth and searching interviews with two older care-givers, this study explored the determinants that help to sustain cares in their long-term care role and proposes an explanatory model for sustaining care. Attempts were made to uncover those meanings held by Chinese care-givers in interpreting their roles in a positive way despite the enormous demands placed on them by care-giving or, if they interpreted their care giving negatively, the attitudes that sustained their giving of care. Narrative accounts were obtained through separate interviews (conducted by two experienced social workers) asking open-ended …

What Counsel For The Ward Can Learn From Will Contests, Alison Mcchrystal Barnes Jan 2003

What Counsel For The Ward Can Learn From Will Contests, Alison Mcchrystal Barnes

Faculty Publications

In spite of efforts to relax formalities requirements for wills in the revision of the Uniform Probate Code (1990), courts still often decide will contests in such a way as to help family members to keep assets within the family. Barnes suggests that studies of guardianship actions be done to determine if guardianships are being determined solely to benefit family members.

The Training Implications Of A Social Care Approach To Working With Older People, Carmel Gallagher, Kathleen Kennedy Jan 2003

The Training Implications Of A Social Care Approach To Working With Older People, Carmel Gallagher, Kathleen Kennedy

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

While care of older people involves both medical and social care nursing homes are essentially an extension of the functions of the home rather than of a hospital. The largest group of employees in residential care settings are nurses and care attendants. A medical model could be said to dominate not a social care approach. However there has been a move away from large institutional settings with a hospital atmosphere to smaller more homely units where there is more emphasis on purposive activity and links with the community. Traditionally many of the day services for older people were provided by …

Intersystem Collaboration: A Statewide Initiative To Support Families, Elizabeth M. Tracy, David E. Beigel, Ann C. Rebeck, Jeffrey A. Johnsen

Journal of Family Strengths

The collaborative experience is described from the perspective of participating service system professionals and family members. The major themes of collaboration that emerged from the study included changes in communication across systems, changes in inter-system relationships, changes in attitudes, changes in interactions with families, and changes in the ways services are delivered. Lessons learned and practice implications of each theme are discussed.
