Help One Another, Use One Another: Toward An Anthropology Of Family Business, Alex Stewart Jul 2003

Help One Another, Use One Another: Toward An Anthropology Of Family Business, Alex Stewart

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Anthropological kinship theory is explored for potential contributions to a theory of family business. This paper considers the costs and benefits of a role for kinship in business. Both derive from the discrepancy between the normative orders of kinship and markets; respectively, long-term generalized reciprocity and short-term balanced reciprocity. Because the former reflects the morality of society as a whole, kinship integrates social fields more readily than more specialized orders like markets.

Investing In Hope: Aids, Life Expectancy, And Human Capital Accumulation, Rui Huang, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

A three period overlapping generations model is developed to investigate the impact of shorter life expectancy due to disease, on human capital investment decisions and income growth. This research is particularly relevant to Sub-Saharan Africa given the dramatic reduction in life expectancy due to HIV/AIDS and the potential lasting effects on growth. Our results indicate that as life expectancy shortens so does schooling inducing a lower growth rate of income. These relationships are even more pronounced for the African continent than for the rest of the world.

We examine the distribution and structure of human genetic diversity for 710 individuals representing 31 populations from Africa, East Asia, Europe, and India using 100 Alu insertion polymorphisms from all 22 autosomes. Alu diversity is highest in Africans (0.349) and lowest in Europeans (0.297). Alu insertion frequency is lowest in Africans (0.463) and higher in Indians (0.544), E. Asians (0.557), and Europeans (0.559). Large genetic distances are observed among African populations and between African and non-African populations. The root of a neighbor-joining network is located closest to the African populations. These findings are consistent with an African origin of modern …

The Electronic Polis: Media Democracy And The Invasion Of Iraq, Jeff Lewis, Kirsty Best Jul 2003

The Electronic Polis: Media Democracy And The Invasion Of Iraq, Jeff Lewis, Kirsty Best

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The American-led victory in Baghdad was announced to the world with scenes of Iraqi citizens dragging down the statues of the deposed tyrant. Like the spectacle of World Cup Soccer or the Olympic Games, the image was transmitted live through the global media network to the billions of people who had been closely watching the three week invasion. President Bush shared in the celebration, announcing the dawn of a new age for freedom and democracy in the Middle East. This new democracy, the president proclaimed, would bring stability and prosperity to the region through the obliteration of terrorism …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

A recent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art cites the production of textiles as integral in establishing the power of the Mongol empire. In the accompanying notes to the exhibit, the museum curators write that, In the creation of luxury textiles and objects for the Mongol elite, Chinese artists developed a visual language that was an effective means of establishing their rule and continuous presence throughout the vast empire. These artists used certain motifs such as the dragon and phoenix, to create tangible representations of power. The mythical beasts integrated the ideas of cosmic force, earthly strength, …

Pharmacogenomics And Indigenous Peoples: Real Issues And Actors, Russel Lawrence Barsh Jul 2003

Pharmacogenomics And Indigenous Peoples: Real Issues And Actors, Russel Lawrence Barsh

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article critically examines the ethical and scientific implications of genetic diversity research, particularly focusing on the Human Genome Diversity Project (HGDP). It highlights the tension between advancing scientific knowledge and addressing the ethical concerns of sampling vulnerable populations, such as indigenous and isolated communities. While the research aims to study genetic variation for medical and historical insights, it raises significant issues regarding informed consent, group rights, and the potential exploitation of these populations. The article emphasizes the need for balanced approaches that respect both individual and collective rights while ensuring equitable benefits from genetic research.

Looking Beyond Intellectual Property In Resolving Protection Of The Intangible Cultural Heritage Of Indigenous Peoples, Robert K. Paterson, Dennis S. Karjala Jul 2003

Looking Beyond Intellectual Property In Resolving Protection Of The Intangible Cultural Heritage Of Indigenous Peoples, Robert K. Paterson, Dennis S. Karjala

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the challenges indigenous peoples face in protecting their intangible cultural property, such as songs, legends, and ceremonies, under existing intellectual property (IP) and legal regimes. It argues that while indigenous claims for protection are legitimate, recognizing new IP rights may not be necessary or appropriate. Instead, the authors propose that existing legal frameworks, such as contract law, privacy, trade secret, and trademark law, could provide more effective and balanced solutions. They advocate for a nuanced approach that respects indigenous cultural heritage while maintaining compatibility with public domain interests and free expression.

Formulating An International Legal Protection For Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge And Folklore: Challenges For The Intellectual Property System, Weerawit Weeraworawit

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article argues that the current international intellectual property system, established by agreements such as the Paris Convention, Berne Convention, and TRIPS, is inadequate to address the protection of genetic resources, traditional knowledge, and folklore. These emerging global issues require a new international legal framework that balances the rights of communities with the demands of innovation and trade. The article emphasizes the need for a comprehensive and equitable regime, possibly through a sui generis system or modifications to existing IP laws, to address challenges such as biopiracy, benefit sharing, and communal rights.
