The Enduring Black Church And Its Critics: A Book Review Of Omar Mcroberts's Streets Of Glory, Kenneth D. Johnson Sep 2003

The Enduring Black Church And Its Critics: A Book Review Of Omar Mcroberts's Streets Of Glory, Kenneth D. Johnson

Trotter Review

This review examines several theses and methodologies regarding Black Church activism and contribution to community economic development in an economically depressed inner city neighborhood as presented in Omar McRoberts's Streets of Glory (University of Chicago Press, 2003). It finds the questions of interest, but empirical support for many of the author's theses lacking when considered from a cross-comparative national perspective.

The United Nations And War In The Twentieth And Twenty-First Centuries, Robert Weiner Sep 2003

The United Nations And War In The Twentieth And Twenty-First Centuries, Robert Weiner

New England Journal of Public Policy

The United Nations was created in 1945 to prevent another world war. It was designed, as the Preamble to the Charter states, to eliminate the scourge of war. The failure to agree on a permanent UN international army meant that the UN had to improvise in dealing with wars. Peacekeeping, which is not mentioned anywhere in the UN Charter, had to be invented. This study investigates how peacekeeping has evolved through four “generations,” culminating in Unsanctioned multinational forces consisting of “coalitions of the willing.” The study also stresses how one of the greatest peacekeeping failures of the UN in the …

Wanted: A National Teacher Supply Policy For Education: The Right Way To Meet The "Highly Qualified Teacher" Challenge, Linda Darling-Hammond, Gary Sykes Sep 2003

Wanted: A National Teacher Supply Policy For Education: The Right Way To Meet The "Highly Qualified Teacher" Challenge, Linda Darling-Hammond, Gary Sykes

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

… We argue that teacher supply policy should attract well-prepared teachers to districts that sorely need them while relieving shortages in fields like special education, math and the physical sciences. We study the mal-distribution of teachers and examine its causes. We describe examples of both states and local school districts that have fashioned successful strategies for strengthening their teaching forces. ...

No-Till Forage Establishment In Alaska, Stephen D. Sparrow, Michael T. Panciera, Darleen T. Masiak, Beth A. Hall, Raymond G. Gavlak Sep 2003

No-Till Forage Establishment In Alaska, Stephen D. Sparrow, Michael T. Panciera, Darleen T. Masiak, Beth A. Hall, Raymond G. Gavlak

Bulletin

We assessed the effectiveness of no-till forage establishment at six Alaska locations: Anchor Point, Sterling, Point MacKenzie, Palmer, Delta Junction, and Fairbanks. Directly seeding grass into established grass stands generally did not improve forage yields or quality. Seeding rate had little effect on establishment of newly seeded forages in no-till. Grass yields were depressed when companion crop yields were high, and they typically did not recover in subsequent years. Red clover established well, producing high yields of good quality forage under no-till at Point MacKenzie, but established poorly at Anchor Point and Delta Junction. These results indicated that no-till seeding …

Sedimentary Aggregates In The Peoria Loess Of Nebraska, Usa, Joseph A. Mason, Peter M. Jacobs, Richard S. B. Greene Sep 2003

Sedimentary Aggregates In The Peoria Loess Of Nebraska, Usa, Joseph A. Mason, Peter M. Jacobs, Richard S. B. Greene

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Loess grain size data used to infer transport direction or wind strength are generally derived from vigorously disaggregated samples. However, these data may not adequately represent the effective particle size distribution during loess transport, if the transported dust contained aggregates of fine-grained material. Thin sections of minimally altered C and BC horizons in the late Pleistocene Peoria Loess of Nebraska, USA, indicate the presence of aggregates with diameters of 30–1000 Am. The larger aggregates (>250 μm) are unlikely to have been transported, and are interpreted as the result of soil faunal activity and other pedogenic processes after deposition. Aggregates …

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll Sep 2003

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll

Theses and Dissertations

Excavations at a high altitude archaeological site (3350 m) in the eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, uncovered at least three ephemeral brush structures. These temporary timberline dwellings are the highest structures excavated in Utah to date. The periods of occupation range from the early Fremont period to the post-contact era. It is believed that the Fremont occupations are logistical in nature, possibly representing male hunting parties. Logistical camps imply a departure from, and return to, a residential camp. Ethnographic studies show that most residential camps are located within proximity to culinary plants to facilitate collection by women. In the Uinta Mountains, …
