Technology Service Solutions: New Wine In Old Wineskins?, Elizabeth A. Pawlicki Oct 2003

Technology Service Solutions: New Wine In Old Wineskins?, Elizabeth A. Pawlicki

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Comment examines the National Labor Relations Board's decision in Technology Services Solutions, which held—via application of the Supreme Court's "reasonable alternative means" test-that an employer did not commit an unfair labor practice when it refused to provide the union attempting to organize the employer's teleworking customer service representatives with employees' names and addresses. After reviewing the evolution of union access rules, Pawlicki argues that by endorsing the application of traditional union access rules to the nontraditional telework environment, the National Labor Relations Board effectively denied an emerging segment of U.S. workers a right that has long been a …

Nitric Oxide Mediates Seasonal Muscle Potentiation In Clam Gills, Louis F. Gainey Jr., Michael J. Greenberg Oct 2003

Nitric Oxide Mediates Seasonal Muscle Potentiation In Clam Gills, Louis F. Gainey Jr., Michael J. Greenberg

Faculty Publications

The physiology and timing of gill muscle potentiation were explored in the clam Mercenaria mercenaria. When isolated demibranchs were exposed twice (with an intervening wash) to the same concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine, the second contraction was larger than the first. This potentiation was seasonal: it was present from November through June, and absent from July through October. Potentiation was not affected by the geographic origin of the clams, nor by their acclimation temperature. Potentiation was inhibited by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-NAME and mimicked by the nitric oxide (NO) donor DEANO. During the season of potentiation, immunoreactive NOS appeared …

Ancient Egyptian Religion On The Silver Screen: Modern Anxieties About Race, Ethnicity, And Religion, Caroline T. Schroeder Oct 2003

Ancient Egyptian Religion On The Silver Screen: Modern Anxieties About Race, Ethnicity, And Religion, Caroline T. Schroeder

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

This essay examines the depiction of religion, race, and ethnicity in four films: The Mummy, Stargate, The Ten Commandments, and Prince of Egypt. Each film - explicitly or implicitly, deliberately or not - uses ancient Egyptian religion as a foil to dramatize American concerns about race and ethnicity. The foil is the mysterious, and often false, religiosity of an often Orientalized religious and ethnic "other."

Preserving Community In The City: Special Improvement Districts And The Privatization Of Urban Racialized Space, Audrey Mcfarlane Oct 2003

Preserving Community In The City: Special Improvement Districts And The Privatization Of Urban Racialized Space, Audrey Mcfarlane

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay examines some of the ramifications of the formation of business improvement districts (BIDs) in urban centers that levy additional taxes in particular geographic areas to provide supplementary services. Originally designed to further business development to improve the tax base of the entire city, these districts are increasingly being used by affluent city neighborhoods to enhance what are viewed as inadequate municipal services. Because cities are often divided into affluent, white neighborhoods and poor minority ones, BIDs are troubling in that they reinforce race and class divisions within what is theoretically an urban whole. Professor McFarlane argues that we …

Mary Robinson Hunter: Reminiscences Of Her Life In Brazil, Evelyn M. Cherpak Oct 2003

Mary Robinson Hunter: Reminiscences Of Her Life In Brazil, Evelyn M. Cherpak

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

As a Latin Americanist with a specialty in Women's History, I was eager ft to edit a diary kept by an American woman in South America, so I was pleasantly surprised when I called the Newport Historical Society and spoke to the curator of manuscripts who told me that the Mary Robinson Hunter diaries in their collection covered her residence in Brazil fromi 1835 to 1848. I promptly visited the Historical Society, read the journals, found them fascinating, and began my part-time editing project.

The diaries consist of six volumes in which Mary Hunter wrote nearly every day. Each entry, …

Unity In Diversity: The Virtues Of A Metadisciplinary Perspective In Liberal Arts Education, Alexander Werth Oct 2003

Unity In Diversity: The Virtues Of A Metadisciplinary Perspective In Liberal Arts Education, Alexander Werth

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Remember the story of the blind men and the elephant? Each man touches a different part of the animal (its side, trunk, tusk, leg, ear, and tail) and pronounces his find a wall, a snake, a spear, a tree, a fan, or a rope. As the poet Godfrey Saxe (1816-1997) wrote of the blind men in his retelling of this ancient Indian parable, “Though each was partly in the right, they all were in the wrong” (Galdone, 1973). This allegory quickly encapsulates the benefits, and the challenges, of seeing, or not seeing, something through multiple perspectives—in short, it illuminates the …

Religion, Idealism, And African American Autobiography In The Northern Plains: Era Bell Thompson’S American Daughter, Kevin L. Cole, Leah Weins Oct 2003

Religion, Idealism, And African American Autobiography In The Northern Plains: Era Bell Thompson’S American Daughter, Kevin L. Cole, Leah Weins

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In her introduction to American Women’s Autobiography: Fea(s)ts of Memory, Margo Culley writes, “It would be hard to point to a field of contemporary literary studies more vibrant than autobiography studies. Where else does one find a wealth of primary material still mostly unread and unranked?” “Unread and unranked” aptly describes Era Bell Thompson’s American Daughter, an autobiographical account of an African American woman who comes of age on the plains of North Dakota in the early twentieth century. It is one of those almost forgotten autobiographies that deserves to be read, ranked, and reconsidered, especially in the …

Fairy Castle Or Steamer Trunk? Creating Place In O. E. Rølvaag’S Giants In The Earth, Diane D. Quantic Oct 2003

Fairy Castle Or Steamer Trunk? Creating Place In O. E. Rølvaag’S Giants In The Earth, Diane D. Quantic

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

What happens when humans move beyond the boundaries of civilization? Does the very act transform them? How do they define themselves in apparently empty space? Throughout the nineteenth century, thousands of Americans headed west to the frontier, the borderland between civilization and wilderness. Most went willingly, confident or desperately hopeful that they would have the freedom to create a place of their own and, in the process, recreate themselves. Before they set out for the frontier, they imagined it a garden, based on the myths of plenty and entitlement that were described in boosters’ letters, newspaper accounts, railroad brochures, and …

Differential Population And Income Migration In The Great Plains, 1995- 1998, Alexander Vias, Charles Collins Oct 2003

Differential Population And Income Migration In The Great Plains, 1995- 1998, Alexander Vias, Charles Collins

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The depopulation of the Great Plains continues to draw the attention of rural scholars. However, a number of aspects of migration in the region remain poorly understood. For example, what differences exist among migrants in terms of their economic characteristics? Recent research shows that there is tremendous variability in the amount of income each migrant brings to or takes from a region. Using county-level Internal Revenue Service data for migration flows between 1995 and 1998, we explore the spatial patterns of income and population migration, while contrasting the income flows of in-migrants versus out-migrants. The results show that income flows …

Migration And Counter-Urbanization In The Edwards Plateau Of Texas, 1985-1990, Jason Holcomb Oct 2003

Migration And Counter-Urbanization In The Edwards Plateau Of Texas, 1985-1990, Jason Holcomb

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Unlike most of the Great Plains, Texas's Edwards Plateau lies near large, rapidly growing metropolitan centers. County-to-county migration data for the period 1985-1990 were used to examine migration patterns in Edwards Plateau counties. Weighted standard distance and stream efficiency values were used to analyze county immigration fields of 28 nonmetropolitan counties. A key finding was that net in-migration to counties closest to metropolitan areas was not mere "urban spillover." There were also indications that counterurban migration extended beyond metropolitan-adjacent counties to more sparsely populated destinations. Counterurbanization was occurring from central counties of the nation's largest metropolitan areas and some Texas …
