Maintain Hydraulic Control Using Deep Rooted Tree Systems, A. Ferro, M. Gefell, Roger Kjelgren, D. S. Lipson, N. Zollinger, S. Jackson
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Groundwater phytotechnology systems are currently being used to control the migration of contaminant plumes and remove groundwater that flows into containment areas. Trees in such systems function by reducing recharge and using groundwater via transpiration. A stand of deep-rooted trees can act as a biological "pump", removing a substantial amount of water from the saturated zone. Depth to groundwater compared to rooting depth is an important consideration Many useful tree species are not naturally deep-rooted, but various cultural practices can produce trees with roots that are deep enough to tap into the water table. Hydraulic control can be calculated or …

Deserted Villages: From The Ancient To The Medieval Fayyum, James G. Keenan
Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article, originally delivered as a paper at the 117th Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association, is a development of twin papers given by Roger Bagnall and me at the xxe Congres International des Etudes Byzantines in Paris, 19-25 August 2001, as part of a "Table ronde" on villages in the Byzantine world. On that occasion, we were responsible for Egyptian villages, he for villages as evidenced (mainly) in the Greek papyri, I for the medieval period based on al-Nabulsi's description of Egypt's Fayyum Province, Ta 'rikh al-Fayyiim (c. 1245 A.D.). Thematically, we had agreed to explore such topics …

Characterisation Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity In The Sea Anemone Aiptasia Pallida And An Evaluation Of Responses To Environmental Stress, Clare Emma Morrall
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Studies were undertaken to investigate the presence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS; E.C. 1.14.13.39) activity in number of cnidarian species from shallow marine subtropical environments. Enzyme activity was assayed by measuring the conversion of 3H L-arginine to 3H L-citrulline (the citrulline assay). This assay was shown to be sufficiently sensitive for studies of this nature but was not optimised for use with cnidarian preparations. As a result, confidence in the accuracy of the generated assay results is limited. NOS activity was nevertheless demonstrated in the sea anemone A. pallida, in the zooxanthellae associated with A. pallida, Symbiodinium spp. and in …
An Analysis Of The Role Of The Baltic States Ports In The Trans Siberian Railway Market, Anastasia Liliopoulou
An Analysis Of The Role Of The Baltic States Ports In The Trans Siberian Railway Market, Anastasia Liliopoulou
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Almost all the people involved in the shipping industry have come in touch from time to time with what is known as container transit. Some of these people may be working in one way or another in this field, whilst others may be familiar with the meaning and the importance of container transit. This research aims to examine the potential of the Baltic States' ports as transit gateways for the Trans Siberian container market. This work is divided in two parts, the theoretical and the practical. The first part of the study provides a theoretical presentation of the construct under …
The Kinesfield : A Study Of Movement-Based Interactive And Choreographic Art, Gretchen Elizabeth Schiller
The Kinesfield : A Study Of Movement-Based Interactive And Choreographic Art, Gretchen Elizabeth Schiller
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Through the exploration of practice and theory, this thesis aims to elucidate the characteristics of movement-based interactive art and the kinesfield, a term developed during the course of the research to describe the publics' body-medium. Movement-based interactive art is based on choreographed movements of the body, media and specialized technologies which facilitate new forms of participatory movement experience. This emergent art form has initiated new methods of experiencing and presenting dance in the public domain. lt is argued that this leads to new artistic developments which may constitute a paradigm shift of the concept of the body-medium in the field …
Political Dealignment In Britain : The Local Evidence 1959-1979, Paul James Lambe
Political Dealignment In Britain : The Local Evidence 1959-1979, Paul James Lambe
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis challenges the dominant view that municipal elections tell us practically nothing about the preferences and attitudes of the voter to local issues and events, that municipal elections are no more than national referendums. It suggests that the influence of socio-economic environment and political context and indeed structural factors have hitherto been underestimated. It argues that municipal politics and voting behaviour impact upon parliamentary electoral behaviour and outcomes and thereby the politics of place impinge upon the national electoral level. The thesis employs a multi-disciplinary approach that combines the qualitative research methods of the historian and the quantitative statistical …

Influence Of Natural And Anthropogenic Disturbance On The Soft Bottom Macrobenthic Community Of The Campeche Bank, Mexico, Hector Abuid Hernandez-Arana
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The structure of macrobenthic communities was investigated in carbonate and transitional carbonate-terrigenous sediments of the Southern Gulf of Mexico (Campeche Bank). The aim was to assess the influence of natural disturbance represented by winter storms and river runoff and the putative influence of oil-related activities using a regional approach. At a scale of > 100 km community composition of benthic macroinfauna was characterised as distinct assemblages within the carbonate and transitional sedimentary provinces controlled by natural disturbance. The carbonate assemblage was numerous and diverse influenced by a heterogeneous substratum. Winter storms had a severe impact with mortality probably resulting from abrasion …

Mutations and/or overexpression of various transporters are known to confer drug resistance in a variety of organisms. In the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, a homologue of P-glycoprotein, PfMDR1, has been implicated in responses to chloroquine (CO), quinine (ON) and other drugs, and a putative transporter, PfCRT, was recently demonstrated to be the key molecule in CO resistance. However, other unknown molecules are probably involved, as different parasite clones carrying the same pfcrt and pfmdr1 alleles show a wide range of quantitative responses to CO and ON. Such molecules may contribute to increasing incidences of ON treatment failure, the molecular basis …

Nebraska Law Review
This article begins by reviewing the democratic foundations of education and the history of school finance litigation. Then, it explains the framework by which courts and legislatures resolve these cases and implement appropriate remedies, particularly discussing the role research and expert testimony play in influencing remedies. Third, this article recounts the research findings on small schools, interpreting them in relation to the ongoing reform efforts in courts and legislatures. In Part VI, this article explores the role small schools play in fostering democratic education, a significant factor in several prominent cases. Last, this article reaches conclusions about the ultimate efficacy …

Slavery And The Roots Of Sexual Harassment, Adrienne D. Davis
Slavery And The Roots Of Sexual Harassment, Adrienne D. Davis
Scholarship@WashULaw
In recent years, feminist scholars and activists have demonstrated the ways that U.S. slavery functioned as a system of gender supremacy. It entailed the dominance of men over women as well as whites over blacks. Adding the gender lens has shed immense light on the ways that sex, law, and power operated in the racially supremacist enslaving South. In recent years, this literature has emphasized the ways that slavery's sexual and racial subordination converged around the bodies of enslaved black women. One project within this literature characterizes slavery as a "sexual political economy" to make explicit the connections between its …
Promoting Social Emotional Intelligence In Elementary School Children, Beryl Irene Bailey
Promoting Social Emotional Intelligence In Elementary School Children, Beryl Irene Bailey
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to provide educators with a curriculum embedded program to prevent, curtail, or reverse the negative trajectory of poor social emotional development of elementary students. Third-grade students failed to demonstrate social emotional intelligence. They lacked discipline. They exhibited difficulty staying on task and working cooperatively with peers, repeatedly interrupted instruction, used negative language, did not return homework, and were often referred to the office for disciplinary action.
In a 5-week training session, teachers learned how to implement the writer’s Sowing SEEDS (Social Emotional and Educational Development of Students) Curriculum. This literacy-based program contained children’s literature aligned …

This qualitative study explored the experiences of ten teachers who participated in the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute (CWTI) during an 11-year period. The researcher used in-depth interviewing to identify why these teachers participated in this institute, what they experienced and learned during the institute, and how the institute influenced their teaching as well as student learning of early American history. The participants in this study identified similar reasons for applying to the institute, which included a desire to gain more knowledge and skills to improve their teaching of early American history. Seven themes emerged as participants described their experiences during …
Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang
Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang
Research Collection School Of Economics
This article recounts how a number of strategic infrastructure investment decisions in airport and rail development taken by the Singapore government were at variance with recommendations emerging from cost-benefit analysis, but were considered necessary to support external competitiveness. This link between infrastructure provision and economic development may require decision makers to assess the trade-off between prudent macro-economic planning and efficient micro-economic management for major projects. In the case of airport hubs, the most difficult assessment might be the game consideration of how much, and how far ahead, excess capacity is needed to ensure the dominance of the hub.
Aquatic-Terrestrial Linkages In Appalachian Streams: Influence Of Riparian Inputs On Stream Habitat, Brook Trout Populations, And Trophic Dynamics., John A. Sweka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Riparian zones play a major role in the structure and function of headwater stream ecosystems. Inputs of leaf litter from riparian zones are the primary energy source for secondary production in these streams and inputs of large woody debris (LWD) help shape stream habitat. Riparian zones of Appalachian streams were degraded by past timber harvest activities. Streamside management zones (SMZs) now protect the riparian zone by limiting timber harvest activities near streams. The objective of this study was to examine aquatic-terrestrial linkages and how habitat and food resources influence brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis) populations in Appalachian streams. LWD was …
The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the interaction between the Innu of Labrador, an indigenous people in Canada, and the state since the middle twentieth century. The changing spatiality of this interaction can be understood through the analysis of the politics of scale. The scale of Innu social practices has historically been wide-ranging and fluid. Since the 1950s, the state has been increasingly involved in development projects on the lands the Innu have traditionally occupied. The state’s solution to the unwanted presence of the Innu was to settle, and therefore rescale, them in two settlements in the 1960s. The Innu’s struggle to regain …
Manifestoes: A Study In Genre, Stevens Russell Amidon
Manifestoes: A Study In Genre, Stevens Russell Amidon
Open Access Dissertations
This project is a book-length study of the manifesto, which attempts to trace adaptations writers have made to the genre, beginning with the Luther's "95 Theses." From there I move to political manifestoes, including the "Twelve Articles of the Swabian Peasants and Marx and Engels' "Manifesto of the Communist Party," and then to the aesthetic manifestoes of modernism. Later I treat manifestoes of critique, examining texts by Virginia Woolf, Frank O'Hara, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Donna Haraway, the Students for a Democratic Society and the Lesbian Avengers.
While this project is a study of genre and influence, it is grounded …
Multilateral Management As A Fair Solution To The Spratly Disputes, Wei Cui
Multilateral Management As A Fair Solution To The Spratly Disputes, Wei Cui
All Faculty Publications
The Spratlys are a scattered group of islands in the South China Sea over which China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei have made conflicting jurisdictional claims. Although there has been significant academic discussion of this dispute, the Author argues that much of it is hampered by a discourse obsessed with the regional balance of power and security-related strategies that are only tenuously related to each nation's specific legal claims in the Spratlys. In this Article, the Author suggests that a more productive approach to the Spratly disputes is one focused on finding a solution that is fair to all …

"High achievement" was measured by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System from its initiation in 1998 to the present. Data were collected through archival research and interviews with teachers and administrators. Discussion occurs regarding curricular adjustment and environmental change in creating a balance between curricula and climate within the middle school milieu. In this time of educational success merging with demands for …
Globalization Of Innovations: A Multilevel-Multimethod Framework To Explain Diffusion And Adoption Of The Internet, Nir B. Kshetri
Globalization Of Innovations: A Multilevel-Multimethod Framework To Explain Diffusion And Adoption Of The Internet, Nir B. Kshetri
Open Access Dissertations
Little research has been conducted to understand the factors influencing the global diffusion of information and communications technologies (ICTs) such as the Internet. Moreover, the existing literature has a severe lack of studies dealing with the diffusion of ICTs in developing countries. The developing countries' increasingly important roles in international relations and global e-commerce make research focusing on Internet diffusion in these countries still more important. A focus on the developing world--home to 80% of humanity--is also an antidote to the tendency in the field of consumer research of becoming "increasingly isolated and of marginal relevance". To fill these research …

Development Of Culturally Tailored Measures For Hispanics At-Risk For Hiv, Shirley Amanda Gazabon
Open Access Dissertations
The HIV/AIDS epidemic represents an ever-increasing threat to the Hispanic populations in the United States. Much research has been done developing and validating HIV prevention measures on English speaking non-Hispanic individuals, but no attempts have been done to develop culturally appropriate measures for at-risk Hispanics. This study had four main goals: (1) to develop and culturally tailor an English and Spanish version of the Transtheoretical Model's condom stage of change, condom use decisional balance, and condom use self-efficacy scales; (2) to develop a Spanish version of the Multifaceted Model's sexual assertiveness scale; (3) to validate the English version of the …

Surface Mines As Landscape Features: Contrasting Microclimate And Forest Composition Among Open, Edge And Interior., Sheila A. Kazar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Surface mining disturbs thousands of hectares of forest every year in the Appalachian region resulting in the creation of forest edges. In this study, variability in air temperature and moisture, soil temperature and moisture, photosynthetically active radiation and wind velocity are quantified for open, edge and interior environments of reclaimed surface mines in north central West Virginia. Tree species composition, soil pH and compaction were also examined. Mean daily air and soil temperature, wind velocity and photosynthetically active radiation are lower, and soil and air moisture higher inside the forest than in the open or at the edge. Soil temperature, …

Industry In Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, 1861-1865., Coral L. N. Totten
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Harperís Ferry, West Virginia began its existence as a small settlement in the Northern Neck of colonial Virginia. Originally it was a point of departure for westward expansion, but due to its geographical location, the cultural background of the immigrants who settled there, and technological advancements in transportation, communication and manufacturing, it became a model of industrial development in the nineteenth century. Although it possessed all the factors necessary for continued growth, unwise land management practices, due in part to the Civil War, as well as the consequences of war itself, and technological advancements in steam power, led to the …
