Low-Fired Earthenwares In The African Diaspora: Problems And Prospects, Mark W. Hauser, Christopher R. Decorse Mar 2003

Low-Fired Earthenwares In The African Diaspora: Problems And Prospects, Mark W. Hauser, Christopher R. Decorse

Anthropology - All Scholarship

Local earthenware associated with enslaved African populations in the Americas, variously called “Colono-Ware,” “Afro-CaribbeanWare.” “Yabbas,” and “Criollo ware,” has received considerable attention from researchers. What unifies this disparate group of ceramics is not method of manufacture, design and decoration, or even form and function but the association or potential association with African diaspora populations. The ceramics incorporate some skills and techniques possibly brought by African potters to the Americas, as well as skills reflecting European and Native American traditions, and local adaptations in form, function, and manufacture.Analogies linking African ceramic traditions to American industries have at times been employed uncritically …

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

In 2002, The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati contracted with the Center for Health Services Research and Policy at The George Washington University to conduct a study of the Health Foundation's service area, looking specifically at issues related to access to healthcare for uninsured and underserved residents. This report provides information on the health and socioeconomic status of the population and the status of safety net providers in the region and identifies gaps in care that currently exist or are likely to surface in the near future. It also highlights areas that may be particularly sensitive to economic, political, or …

Education Technology

This report presents some early evaluation evidence on the effectiveness and impact of the implementation of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI). The goal of the Year One evaluation, which is being conducted by the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI), is to provide policymakers and practitioners with information that will assist them in determining whether or not, and to what degree, the vision and goals of the MLTI are being achieved. The Year One design is focusing primarily on the students who entered seventh grade in September 2002, and their teachers and schools.

The MEPRI evaluation team has focused …

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Hydrocarbon and halocarbon measurements collected during the second airborne Biomass Burning and Lightning Experiment (BIBLE-B) were subjected to a principal component analysis (PCA), to test the capability for identifying intercorrelated compounds within a large whole air data set. The BIBLE expeditions have sought to quantify and understand the products of burning, electrical discharge, and general atmospheric chemical processes during flights arrayed along the western edge of the Pacific. Principal component analysis was found to offer a compact method for identifying the major modes of composition encountered in the regional whole air data set. Transecting the continental monsoon, urban and industrial …

From Techical Fix To Regulatory Mix: Japan's New Environmental Law, Lara Fowler Mar 2003

From Techical Fix To Regulatory Mix: Japan's New Environmental Law, Lara Fowler

Washington International Law Journal

In post-industrial countries like Japan, modem environmental problems defy easy clean up solutions. Thus, effective clean up depends on diverse regulation. Historically, the Japanese government has relied on statutes that mandated technical "fixes" to clean up highly publicized pollution problems. Although such regulations have been successful in areas like air pollution, recent newspaper headlines highlight the extent to which environmental issues continue to affect densely populated Japan. Beginning with the passage of the Environmental Impact Assessment Law in 1997, however, Japan has significantly diversified its environmental policy. Along with strict new regulatory standards, new national laws now allow public access …

The Transnational Classroom: Connecting People, Languages, And Cultures, Lourdes Sánchez-López, Jessica Ramos-Harthun

Dimensions

With the aid of computer technology and students’ firsthand experiences, the Transnational Classroom (TC), a pilot innovative project created and developed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), was implemented in the summer of 2002 for a duration of three and a half weeks. The participants were two groups of students from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures: a study-abroad group in Costa Rica and a Spanish class on the U.S. campus. The main objective of the project was to give the U.S. campus students the opportunity to participate in the foreign culture through their peers’ experiences and …

Stepping Out Of The Classroom To Increase Spanish Language Skills And Cultural Awareness, Betina Kaplan, Teresa Pérez-Gamboa Mar 2003

Stepping Out Of The Classroom To Increase Spanish Language Skills And Cultural Awareness, Betina Kaplan, Teresa Pérez-Gamboa

Dimensions

This article describes the experience of our college-level Spanish students who stepped out of their campus classrooms and into elementary school libraries, corridors, and classrooms to develop an exchange program. Chase Street Elementary School, like many other elementary schools in Athens, Georgia, has a large Hispanic student population composed mostly of recent immigrants with limited English proficiency. This experience served not only the Hispanic community of Athens, but our college students as well. Our students contribute to the reduction of the language barrier that separates teachers from students and their families, and, at the same time, they have the unique …

Group Study Abroad And Thematic Units, Sue Barry

Dimensions

This article describes the model for a Group Study Abroad Project to Peru for K-12 teachers of Spanish that took place during the summer of 2001. The model has a pre-travel, overseas, and post-travel component. All three are described, with special emphasis on the program exit evaluation and the participants’ reactions one year later. Participants were generally positive about their experience, but some expressed a need for more preparation in creating thematic units. Selected units are described in the appendices along with Web site references where readers can find complete lesson plans and e-mail addresses of authors.

Regional Integration And Industrial Location In A Landlocked Spatial Economy, Hemanta Shrestha, Dennis Heffley Mar 2003

Regional Integration And Industrial Location In A Landlocked Spatial Economy, Hemanta Shrestha, Dennis Heffley

Economics Working Papers

Regional integration proposals often require agreements between countries that differ in geographic size, resource endowments, transportation assets, technologies, and product quality. In this asymmetric setting, questions arise about the potential for mutual gains and the distribution of benefits among industries and workers in each country. This paper examines how regional integration between a small landlocked country and a large neighboring country--with a unique port facility that both nations must use to export goods--affects the wage and location decisions of firms, the allocation of labor, the welfare of each country's workers and firms, and aggregate measures of economic welfare in each …

Bacillus Anthracis Virulence In Guinea Pigs Vaccinated With Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed Is Linked To Plasmid Quantities And Clonality, Pamala R. Coker, Kimothy L. Smith, Patricia F. Fellows, Galena Rybachuck, Konstantin G. Kousoulas, Martin E. Hugh-Jones

Faculty Publications

Bacillus anthracis is a bacterial pathogen of great importance, both historically and in the present. This study presents data collected from several investigations and indicates that B. anthracis virulence is associated with the clonality and virulence of plasmids pXO1 and pXO2. Guinea pigs vaccinated with Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed were challenged with 20 B. anthracis isolates representative of worldwide genetic diversity. These same isolates were characterized with respect to plasmid copy number by using a novel method of quantitative PCR developed for rapid and efficient detection of B. anthracis from environmental samples. We found that the copy numbers for both pXO1 …
