Seismogenic Zone Structure Of The Southern Middle America Trench, Costa Rica, H. R. Deshon, S. Y. Schwartz, S. L. Bilek, L. M. Dorman, V. Gonzalez, J. M. Protti, E. R. Flueh, Timothy H. Dixon

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The shallow seismogenic portion of subduction zones generates damaging large and great earthquakes. This study provides structural constraints on the seismogenic zone of the Middle America Trench offshore central Costa Rica and insights into the physical and mechanical characteristics controlling seismogenesis. We have located ∼300 events that occurred following the MW 6.9, 20 August 1999, Quepos, Costa Rica, underthrusting earthquake using a three-dimensional velocity model and arrival time data recorded by a temporary local network of land and ocean bottom seismometers. We use aftershock locations to define the geometry and characteristics of the seismogenic zone in this region. These …

Like Oil And Water: The Wto And The World's Water Resources, Rona Nardone Oct 2003

Like Oil And Water: The Wto And The World's Water Resources, Rona Nardone

Connecticut Journal of International Law

It has been predicted that by 2025, two-thirds of the world's population will not have sufficient access to fresh drinking water to meet their basic needs.' Pollution, global climate change, unsustainable use, and a burgeoning worldwide population have compromised the security of existing water resources.2 Scarcity and inaccessibility are not merely specters of the future. Presently, 1.1 billion people lack clean drinking water, 2.4 billion are without water sanitation services,' and water shortages currently plague 450 million people in 29 countries.' In August of 2002, delegates to the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development pledged to reduce the number of …

Revitalization From The Inside Out: The Attempts To Move Towards An Urban Renaissance In The Cities Of The United States And The United Kingdom, Kara Lamb Oct 2003

Revitalization From The Inside Out: The Attempts To Move Towards An Urban Renaissance In The Cities Of The United States And The United Kingdom, Kara Lamb

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Redevelopment, renewal, revitalization, regeneration: all are buzzwords for the government policies aimed at reversing the urban blight and decline that has continually plagued the once thriving cities of the United States and the United Kingdom. The loss of jobs and people to the suburbs has left the cities and their remaining residents behind to deal with issues of poverty, homelessness, and crime. Despite the fact that politicians, social scientists and even urban residents have attempted and proposed various solutions over the past several decades, today such problems continue to plague the inner city neighborhoods of both nations.

Probiems of urban …

"This Is Not Like Any Other Legal Question": A Brief History Of Nazi Law Before U.K. And U.S. Courts, David Fraser

Connecticut Journal of International Law

This year marks the forty-fifth anniversary of the Hart-Fuller debate regarding legal positivism and natural law, which first appeared in the pages of the Harvard Law Review.' In this article I attempt to add to the mix and complexity of these jurisprudential debates by exploring the issue at the core of the Hart-Fuller discourse about law by placing it in the concrete context of decided case law. I will explore the current jurisprudential implications of our historically and discursively constructed images of "Nazi law." In what follows, I offer an examination of most of the cases which have compelled British …

Predicting Fish Species Diversity In Lotic Freshwaters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes Oct 2003

Predicting Fish Species Diversity In Lotic Freshwaters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes

Virginia Journal of Science

Objectives were to test the hypothesis that stream order and stream width alone account for species diversity in drainages of Greece, and to create a mathematical model that predicts fish diversity in small and medium sized freshwater streams in the southern Balkan Peninsula in accord with the stream classification system proposed by the European Environmental Agency (EEA). Thirty-seven species of fishes in 12 families (Petromyzontidae, Anguillidae, Cyprinidae, Moronidae, Centrarchidae, and Blenniidae) were collected in five stream orders (1-5) from 19 river drainages in Greece in 1993 and from 2000-2002. Numbers of species were significantly correlated with stream order (+), width …

A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner Oct 2003

A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Byatt's short fiction, from her first collection Sugar and Other Stories (1987) to Elementals (1998) is marked by a continuous preoccupation with the body: the body as the product of social signifying practices, the body as the site of desires, fears, and anxieties, the body as the source of experience, the body as creator and created. In brief, the body is treated as the centre of existence, consciousness and identity. Yet, these are constantly called into doubt in Byatt's stories, which depict heroines trapped between asserting their identity and submitting to cultural dictates of beauty and behavior. In …

Ravers At The Bush: Generation Ecstasy Goes To The Theatre, William C. Boles Oct 2003

Ravers At The Bush: Generation Ecstasy Goes To The Theatre, William C. Boles

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Determining that seminal moment when a new theatrical movement comes to life has been one of the points of debate surrounding the challenging new plays and their talented, twenty something authors that have appeared on the British stage since the mid-1990s. Plays and authors like: Mojo (1995) by Jez Butterworth; Blasted (1995) by Sarah Kane; Closer (1997) by Patrick Marber; The Beauty Queen of Leenane (1996) by Martin McDonagh; Butterfly Kiss (1994) by Phyllis Nagy; Love and Understanding (1997) by Joe Penhall; Essex Girls (1994) by Rebecca Prichard; Shopping and Fucking (1996) by Mark Ravenhill; and Ashes and …
