Validating Digital Signatures Without Ttp’S Time-Stamping And Certificate Revocation, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

Validating Digital Signatures Without Ttp’S Time-Stamping And Certificate Revocation, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In non-repudiation services where digital signatures usually serve as irrefutable cryptographic evidence for dispute resolution, trusted time-stamping and certificate revocation services, although very costly in practice, must be available, to prevent big loss due to compromising of the signing key. In [12], a new concept called intrusion-resilient signature was proposed to get rid of trusted time-stamping and certificate revocation services and a concrete scheme was presented. In this paper, we put forward a new scheme that can achieve the same effect in a much more efficient way. In our scheme, forward-secure signature serves as a building block that enables signature …

Security Remarks On A Group Signature Scheme With Member Deletion, Guilin Wang, Feng Bao, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

Security Remarks On A Group Signature Scheme With Member Deletion, Guilin Wang, Feng Bao, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A group signature scheme allows a group member of a given group to sign messages on behalf of the group in an anonymous and unlinkable fashion. In case of a dispute, however, a designated group manager can reveal the signer of a valid group signature. Based on the Camenisch-Michels group signature scheme, Kim, Lim and Lee proposed the first group signature scheme with a member deletion procedure at ICISC 2000. Their scheme is very efficient in both communication and computation aspects. Unfortunately, their scheme is insecure. In this paper, we first identify an effective way that allows any verifier to …

Variations Of Diffie-Hellman Problem, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Huafei Zhu Oct 2003

Variations Of Diffie-Hellman Problem, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Huafei Zhu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies various computational and decisional Diffie-Hellman problems by providing reductions among them in the high granularity setting. We show that all three variations of computational Diffie-Hellman problem: square Diffie-Hellman problem, inverse Diffie-Hellman problem and divisible Diffie-Hellman problem, are equivalent with optimal reduction. Also, we are considering variations of the decisional Diffie-Hellman problem in single sample and polynomial samples settings, and we are able to show that all variations are equivalent except for the argument DDH ⇐ SDDH. We are not able to prove or disprove this statement, thus leave an interesting open problem. Keywords: Diffie-Hellman problem, Square Diffie-Hellman …

The Counselor As Expert Witness: Changes In The Michigan Hearsay Rule, John J. Pietrofesa, Cathy J. Pietrofesa, John David Pietrofesa

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

This article discusses the expanding role of the professional counselor as expert witness. The preferred role of the expert witness is one in which the expert informatively presents the facts and does not act as an advocate trying to influence a legal decision. The expert witness in Michigan now has to consider changes in the Michigan Rules of Evidence which disallows any hearsay evidence the counselor may have acquired during counseling. Additionally, supporting documentation for opinions may not simply be cited, but must be placed into evidence. This article concludes with suggestions for counselors in preparing for the role as …

The dominant electrically active defect produced by 0.42 MeV electron irradiation in GaN is a 70 meV donor. Since only N-sublattice displacements can be produced at this energy, and since theory predicts that the N interstitial is a deep acceptor in n-type GaN, we argue that the 70 meV donor is most likely the isolated N vacancy. The background shallow donors, in the 24–26 meV range, actually decrease in concentration, probably due to interactions with mobile N interstitials that are produced by the irradiation. Thus, the recent assignment of a photoluminescence (PL) line as an exciton bound to a …

Summaries Of Arkansas Cotton Research 2002, Derrick M. Oosterhuis Oct 2003

Summaries Of Arkansas Cotton Research 2002, Derrick M. Oosterhuis

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

The average yield in Arkansas in 2002 was 871 lb lint/acre from 920,000 harvested acres (960,000 planted) for a total of 1.67 million bales at a value of$336.5 million. This yield was second only to the record 877 lb lint/acre achieved in 1994. Last year's crop yield, and the five-year average, on a per acre basis are exceeded in the U.S. Cotton Belt only by California and Arizona. Cotton yields in Arkansas increased steadily during the eighties, but in the last decade yields have leveled off. Furthermore, the last five years have had extreme year-to-year variability in yields, which is …

Implications Of The Precautionary Principle For Environmental Regulation In The United States: Examples From The Control Of Hazardous Air Pollutants In The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, Bernard D. Goldstein, Russellyn S. Carruth Oct 2003

Implications Of The Precautionary Principle For Environmental Regulation In The United States: Examples From The Control Of Hazardous Air Pollutants In The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, Bernard D. Goldstein, Russellyn S. Carruth

Law and Contemporary Problems

Goldstein and Carruth argue that the hazardous air pollutant provisions of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments provide an example of the Precautionary Principle incorporated into US environmental legislation. Evaluating the outcome thus far leads them to the conclusion that utilizing the Precautionary Principle as a basis for legislation can be problematic to public-health goals.

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The shallow seismogenic portion of subduction zones generates damaging large and great earthquakes. This study provides structural constraints on the seismogenic zone of the Middle America Trench offshore central Costa Rica and insights into the physical and mechanical characteristics controlling seismogenesis. We have located ∼300 events that occurred following the MW 6.9, 20 August 1999, Quepos, Costa Rica, underthrusting earthquake using a three-dimensional velocity model and arrival time data recorded by a temporary local network of land and ocean bottom seismometers. We use aftershock locations to define the geometry and characteristics of the seismogenic zone in this region. These …

Parenting From Prison: What Can Extension Educators Do?, Jackie L. Reilly Oct 2003

Parenting From Prison: What Can Extension Educators Do?, Jackie L. Reilly

Journal of Extension

The number of children affected by parental incarceration has increased drastically in the last decade. Many incarcerated parents want to be good parents, and, while in prison, they can improve on their parenting skills and maintain or strengthen their relationships with their children. Extension parent educators can teach parenting skills and present ideas for staying connected while in prison. Since 1997, 139 mothers and 68 fathers have taken the Parenting From Prison class. Activities used in the class are described as well as considerations for modifying existing parenting curricula to fit the needs of incarcerated parents.

Estimation Of Attendance At A Large Outdoor Event, Anne M. Streich, David B. Marx, Jeanette M. Stafford, Steven N. Rodie

Journal of Extension

Accurately estimating program attendance in large, undefined areas is difficult. Yet attendance is an important factor in effective impact assessment and accountability reporting. A simple method, consisting of a combined activity count and exit poll, can be used to produce reasonable results with a measurable assurance of accuracy. A case study application of this method at a major university campus horticulture event is included to summarize the method.

Rights Under Fire: The Inadequacy Of International Human Rights Instruments In Combating Dowry Murder In India, Meghana Shah Oct 2003

Rights Under Fire: The Inadequacy Of International Human Rights Instruments In Combating Dowry Murder In India, Meghana Shah

Connecticut Journal of International Law

When Sunita Vir married in 1991, her father, Kalam Singh, spent over $5,000 on her dowry, which consisted of cash, steel trunks, cupboards, a sewing machine, kitchen utensils, and most importantly, a black-and-white television set, a most coveted possession among India's lower-middle class families.' Still, the elaborate dowry was not enough for Sunita's new in-laws.' Less than two weeks after the marriage, Sunita's husband and in-laws began demanding more dowry from Sunita's family, specifically in the form of a new refrigerator. Sunita's parents could not provide the additional goods, having already acquired a large amount of debt to supply the …

"This Is Not Like Any Other Legal Question": A Brief History Of Nazi Law Before U.K. And U.S. Courts, David Fraser

Connecticut Journal of International Law

This year marks the forty-fifth anniversary of the Hart-Fuller debate regarding legal positivism and natural law, which first appeared in the pages of the Harvard Law Review.' In this article I attempt to add to the mix and complexity of these jurisprudential debates by exploring the issue at the core of the Hart-Fuller discourse about law by placing it in the concrete context of decided case law. I will explore the current jurisprudential implications of our historically and discursively constructed images of "Nazi law." In what follows, I offer an examination of most of the cases which have compelled British …

Of Mice And Men And Trillium: Cascading Effects Of Forest Fragmentation, D. A. Tallmon, E. S. Jules, N. J. Radke, L. Scott Mills

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Cascading ecological effects of anthropogenic habitat fragmentation have been studied primarily in extreme cases (e.g., the isolation of habitat fragments in a novel habitat matrix such as suburban developments, reservoirs, or agricultural fields), with less attention to more subtle and widespread cases, such as habitat fragmentation due to timber harvest. Few studies have used rigorous demographic data to demonstrate the direct and indirect effects of habitat fragmentation. We trapped deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) at five sites over two years in southwest Oregon, USA, and used multi-state capture-recapture models to estimate deer mouse survival and movement in clearcuts; forest-fragment edges, forest-fragment …

Grading The Government, Richard Parker Oct 2003

Grading The Government, Richard Parker

Faculty Articles and Papers

For over a decade, scathing critiques of government have been fueled by a group of studies called regulatory scorecards, which purport to show that the costs of many government regulations vastly outweigh their benefits. One widely-cited study by John Morrall, an OMB economist, claims that government regulations cost up to $72 billion per life saved. Another study, co-authored by Bush's regulatory czar, John Graham, claims that over 60,000 people lose their lives each year due to irrational government regulation. A third group of scorecards - compiled by Robert Hahn of the AEI-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies - claims that …

A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Byatt's short fiction, from her first collection Sugar and Other Stories (1987) to Elementals (1998) is marked by a continuous preoccupation with the body: the body as the product of social signifying practices, the body as the site of desires, fears, and anxieties, the body as the source of experience, the body as creator and created. In brief, the body is treated as the centre of existence, consciousness and identity. Yet, these are constantly called into doubt in Byatt's stories, which depict heroines trapped between asserting their identity and submitting to cultural dictates of beauty and behavior. In …
