The U.S. M-Business Market: Fad Or The Future, Gary Brennan
The U.S. M-Business Market: Fad Or The Future, Gary Brennan
Theses
M-Business is information available on any device, anywhere and at anytime, offering businesses in any industry the potential to expand markets, improve their services and reduce costs. The U.S. m-business market is still in its infancy and is a few years away from becoming a growth market. This is due to a few reasons, which are the lack of standards for connectivity and service, no real applications to support the market and the lack of strong encryption to support m-business and e-commerce. M-business is not a fad but a potential new channel for business operations. This thesis will address the …

Cultural Differences And Organizational Leadership: Cultural Difference As Barriers To The Trans-Cultural Application Of The Concept Of Organizational Leadership, Jennifer Matic
Theses
This study examined the impact of cultural differences on the trans-cultural application of the concept of organizational leadership. The significance of four cultural dimensions (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, and masculinity) (Hofstede, G., 1980) towards the concept of organizational leadership (Rost, J.C, 1991) was discussed and a survey as created to test for cultural differences from a leadership perspective. American and Croatian college students then completed the survey. Results showed cultural similarities for all cultural dimensions with the exception of uncertainty avoidance, which was found to be higher for the American sample than the Croatian. Consequently, it can be said …
Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll
Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ADHD is one of the most frequently diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States today; however, diagnostic specificity remains challenging. Accepted models of ADHD routinely highlight the role of executive function (EF) deficits as a core feature of ADHD. However, performance based measures of EF do not consistently discriminate between ADHD and no-ADHD clinical groups. Research has supported use of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) in discriminating between ADHD and no-ADHD and between subtypes. However, EF deficits can occur for various reasons. Broad range behavior rating scales help identify areas of behavioral concern that may aid clinicians …
Development Of A Technique To Measure The Mtf Of A Transducer Used In An Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner, Laura Blair
Development Of A Technique To Measure The Mtf Of A Transducer Used In An Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner, Laura Blair
Theses
Beam characteristics of a transducer play a major role in defining the resolution of any ultrasound imaging system. Direct experimental estimation of the beam profile is often desirable, however, one has to carefully correct for effects that are attributed to the measurement process itself. We report here our experience of using a measurement technique developed for circular disk focused transducers. When the anticipated beam size is much smaller than 0.5 mm the use of a hydrophone to scan the monochromatic beam is not adequate. A more suitable approach is to make a measurement in pulse-echo mode using a thin (125 …
Production Of An E. Coli Toxin Protein; Colicin A In E. Coli Using An Inducible System, İsa Gökçe, Jeremy H. Lakey
Production Of An E. Coli Toxin Protein; Colicin A In E. Coli Using An Inducible System, İsa Gökçe, Jeremy H. Lakey
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Colicins are bacterial toxins that kill Escherichia coli and related cells; their mode of action is of interest in protein import and toxicology. Colicins translocate across the E. coli outer membrane and periplasm by interacting with several receptors. This translocation process involves interaction of the colicin with the outer membrane porin OmpF and subsequently with the integral membrane protein TolA. The N-terminal domain of colicin N is involved in the import process. Our aim was to produce a large quantity of colicin A for functional and structural studies. It is a prerequisite to have a correctly folded and stable protein …

OES Faculty Publications
The biomass and optical properties of seagrass leaf epiphytes were measured to evaluate their potential impact on the photosynthetic performance of the seagrasses Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König (turtlegrass) and Zostera marina L. (eelgrass). Turtlegrass was obtained from oligotrophic waters near Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas; eelgrass was collected from a eutrophic environment in Monterey Bay, California. Leaf–epiphyte loads were characterized visually and quantified using measurements of their phospholipid biomass. Light absorption and reflectance of the intact epiphyte layer were determined spectrophotometrically. Turtlegrass epiphytes from the oligotrophic site absorbed a maximum of 36% of incident light in peak chlorophyll absorption …
Study Of The "Poor Man's Navier-Stokes" Equation Turbulence Model, Stewart Andrew Bible
Study Of The "Poor Man's Navier-Stokes" Equation Turbulence Model, Stewart Andrew Bible
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The work presented here is part of an ongoing effort to develop a highly accurate and numerically efficient turbulence simulation technique. The paper consists of four main parts, viz., the general discussion of the procedure known as Additive Turbulent Decomposition, the derivation of the "synthetic velocity" subgrid-scale model of the high wavenumber turbulent fluctuations necessary for its implementation, the numerical investigation of this model and a priori tests of said models physical validity. Through these investigations we have demonstrated that this procedure, coupled with the use of the "Poor Mans Navier-Stokes" equation subgrid-scale model, has the potential to be …
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Of Pain And Emotion, Claude Ervin Davis
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Of Pain And Emotion, Claude Ervin Davis
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Neuroscience research has followed two fairly distinct paths in investigating central neural mechanisms of pain and emotion. Rarely have studies been conducted which intentionally combined painful and emotional stimulation while observing brain function. Theories of emotion and pain processing predict an interaction between pain and emotion such that emotional states may serve to both increase or decrease pain. This increase or decrease may also correspond to different effects on different dimensions of the overall pain experience as defined in pain neuromatrix theory. Theories of emotion begin with emotions as interpretations of bodily states, to more contemporary theories focusing on the …
Modeling The Infrared Emission From Dust In Active Galactic Nuclei, Maia M. Nenkova
Modeling The Infrared Emission From Dust In Active Galactic Nuclei, Maia M. Nenkova
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are compact regions in the centers of some galaxies. They emit significantly in the whole range of the electromagnetic spectrum and show variability at different timescales. Observational evidence suggests the presence of a dusty torus obscuring the central radiation source of AGN. According to the Unified Model the observed general properties of AGN emission can be understood on the basis of orientation of this torus toward an observer. Two main types of AGN are distinguished: Type 1, with detected emission from the inner torus cavity viewed pole-on, and Type 2, viewed through the obscuring torus. There …
Tunneling Study Of Superconductivity In Magnesium Diboride, Mohamed Hosiny Badr
Tunneling Study Of Superconductivity In Magnesium Diboride, Mohamed Hosiny Badr
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Although the pairing mechanism in MgB2 is thought to be phonon mediated, there are still many experimental results that lack appropriate explanation. For example, there is no consensus about the magnitude of the energy gap, its temperature dependence, and whether it has only one-gap or not. Many techniques have been used to investigate this, like Raman spectroscopy, farinfrared transmission, specific heat, high-resolution photoemission and tunneling. Most tunneling data on MgB2 are obtained from mechanical junctions. Measurements of energy gap by these junctions have many disadvantages like the instability to temperature and field changes. On the other hand, sandwich-like planar junctions …
2d Radiative Transfer In Astrophysical Dusty Environments, Dejan Vinkovic
2d Radiative Transfer In Astrophysical Dusty Environments, Dejan Vinkovic
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
I have developed a new general-purpose deterministic 2D radiative transfer code for astrophysical dusty environments named LELUYA (www.leluya.org). It can provide the solution to an arbitrary axially symmetric multi-grain dust distribution around an arbitrary heating source. By employing a new numerical method, the implemented algorithm automatically traces the dust density and optical depth gradients, creating the optimal unstructured triangular grid. The radiative transfer equation includes dust scattering, absorption and emission. Unique to LELUYA is also its ability to self-consistently reshape the sublimation/condensation dust cavity around the source to accommodate for the anisotropic diffuse radiation. LELUYAs capabilities are demonstrated in the …
Coevolution And Genetic Diversity In Grass-Endophyte Symbioses, Kelly D. Craven
Coevolution And Genetic Diversity In Grass-Endophyte Symbioses, Kelly D. Craven
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Symbioses between cool-season grasses (Subfamily Pooideae) and endophytic fungi in the genera Epichlo and Neotyphodium straddle a continuum of interactions from antagonistic to highly mutualistic. Although these two genera of endophytes are closely related, Neotyphodium endophytes are strictly seed-transmitted and provide many physiological and defensive benefits to their hosts, while Epichlo spp. have an obligately sexual contagious stage wherein host inflorescences are replaced by fungal sexual structures (stromata), effectively sterilizing the plant. Between these two extremes of interactions are Epichlo spp. with a mixed strategy, where some grass tillers are sterilized while others develop normally and yield healthy endophyte-infected seeds. …
Origins Of Isoprenoid Diversity: A Study Of Structure-Function Relationships In Sesquiterpene Synthases, Bryan T. Greenhagen
Origins Of Isoprenoid Diversity: A Study Of Structure-Function Relationships In Sesquiterpene Synthases, Bryan T. Greenhagen
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Plant sesquiterpene synthases catalyze the conversion of the linear substrate farnesyl diphosphate, FPP, into a remarkable array of secondary metabolites. These secondary metabolites in turn mediate a number of important interactions between plants and their environment, such as plant-plant, plant-insect and plant-pathogen interactions. Given the relative biological importance of sesquiterpenes and their use in numerous practical applications, the current thesis was directed towards developing a better understanding of the mechanisms employed by sesquiterpene synthases in the biosynthesis of such a diverse class of compounds. Substrate preference for sesquiterpene synthases initially isolated from Nicotiana tabacum (TEAS), Hyoscyamus muticus (HPS) and Artemisia …

Soil And Colloidal Phosphorus Dynamics In Three Ky Soils: Bioavailability, Transport And Water Quality Implications, Konstantinos Christos Makris
Soil And Colloidal Phosphorus Dynamics In Three Ky Soils: Bioavailability, Transport And Water Quality Implications, Konstantinos Christos Makris
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Particulate P constitutes a significant portion of the total P found in surface runoff water. Water dispersed P-containing particles can travel long distances via surface runoff and reach water bodies causing decrease in water quality. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the potential facilitation of P transport by the water dispersed soil colloids (WDC) using three KY soils with a long-term record of poultry manure, and fertilizer P applications. Sequential fractionation for both whole soils and colloidal samples revealed that the WDC had a greater total and labile P content than the soil as a whole. Also, …

Are These Queer Times? Gay Male Representation On The American Stage In The 1920'S And 1990'S, James Russell Couch
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Utilizing a model based on Queer theory and comprising four relational paradigms, this thesis examines specific dramas of Mae West and Terrence McNally in an effort to understand the multiple relationships between the text, the society and the culture in the production of a gay male identity and its representation on the American stage in the 1920s and the 1990s. Each relational paradigm is the product of a different twentieth century scholar and can be viewed as an individual lens through which one aspect of a drama or culture can be magnified, illuminated or distorted. These paradigms are: culture and …
Comparative Gene Mapping For Equus Przewalskii And E. Hemionus Onager With Investigation Of A Homologous Chromosome Polymorphism In Equidae, Jennifer Leigh Myka
Comparative Gene Mapping For Equus Przewalskii And E. Hemionus Onager With Investigation Of A Homologous Chromosome Polymorphism In Equidae, Jennifer Leigh Myka
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The ten extant species in the genus Equus are separated by less than 3.7 million years of evolution. Three lines of investigation were pursued to further characterize equid genome organization. 1.) The Przewalski.s wild horse (E. przewalskii, EPR) has a diploid chromosome number of 2n=66, while the domestic horse (E. caballus, ECA) has 2n=64. A comparative gene map for E. przewalskii was constructed using 46 bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) probes previously mapped to 38 of 44 E. caballus chromosome arms and ECAX. BAC clones were hybridized to metaphase spreads of E. przewalskii and localized by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). …

Revising Horn Formulas, Jignesh Umesh Doshi
Revising Horn Formulas, Jignesh Umesh Doshi
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Boolean formulas can be used to model real-world facts. In some situation we may havea Boolean formula that closely approximates a real-world fact, but we need to fine-tune itso that it models the real-world fact exactly. This is a problem of theory revision where thetheory is in the form of a Boolean formula. An algorithm is presented for revising a class ofBoolean formulas that are expressible as conjunctions of Horn clauses. Each of the clausesin the formulas considered here has a unique unnegated variable that does not appear inany other clauses, and is not `F'. The revision algorithm uses equivalence …
A Spatial Model For Evaluating Variable-Rate Fertilizer Application Accuracy, John Patrick Fulton
A Spatial Model For Evaluating Variable-Rate Fertilizer Application Accuracy, John Patrick Fulton
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The popularity of variable-rate technology (VRT) has grown. However, the limitations and errors ofthis technology are generally unknown. Therefore, a spatial data model was developed to generate "asapplied"surfaces to advance precision agricultural (PA) practices. A test methodology based on ASAEStandard S341.2 was developed to perform uniform-rate (UR) and variable-rate (VR) tests to characterizedistribution patterns testing four VRT granular applicators (two spinner spreaders and two pneumaticapplicators). Single-pass UR patterns exhibited consistent shapes for three of the applicators with patternsshifts observed for the fourth applicator. Simulated overlap analysis showed that three of the applicatorsperformed satisfactorily with most CVs less than 20% while …
Inhibitory Properties Of Microplitis Croceipes Teratocyte Secretory Products And The Recombinant Protein Tsp14 On Protein Synthesis, Francis Anthony Diluna
Inhibitory Properties Of Microplitis Croceipes Teratocyte Secretory Products And The Recombinant Protein Tsp14 On Protein Synthesis, Francis Anthony Diluna
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Microplitis croceipes is a solitary endoparasitic wasp that oviposits in the hemocoel of Heleothis virescens larvae. Upon parasitization, the host larvaes physiology is altered; resulting in a compromised immune system and a decrease in the production of some vital proteins resulting in a terminal post-wandering prepupal state. Teratocytes, cells derived from the extraembryonic serosa of the parasitic wasp, mimic symptoms of parasitization when injected into host larvae, independent of other factors like polydnavirus and venom. Some of the inhibition of protein synthesis can be attributed to proteins secreted by the teratocytes (teratocyte secretory proteins or TSP). A fraction of TSP …
