The Responsibility To Protect: A Beaver Without A Dam Review Of The Responsibility To Protect: Reprot Of The International Commission On Intervention And State Sovereignty, Jeremy I. Levitt

Journal Publications

The beaver's dam is comparable to protective intervention for at-risk populations.' Beavers need dams to enlarge the underwater habitat that will be open to them in winter, by creating a pond deep enough so that the bottom will not freeze. Humanitarian corridors and safe havens serve parallel functions for displaced civilians during times of conflict. Deep water, whether it is due to a beaver dam or not, provides storage for winter food and year-round underwater access to the den secure from predators. The shelter and safety deep water provides can be likened to the physical protection needed to safeguard civilians …

Strategic Planning, Hypercompetition, And Knowledge Management, Syed H. Akhter

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

When both product and
resource markets are turbulent
and disruptive, competitive
advantage has to be continually
renewed. But a firm can do this only
by managing its knowledge. Using two
elements of strategic planning—scenario
building and internal situation analysis—
managers can map and integrate knowledge to
gain a sustainable competitive edge in today’s
hypercompetitive markets.

Problem Behavior Theory In An Ethnically Diverse Female Prison Sample, Kristen J. Quinlan Jan 2003

Problem Behavior Theory In An Ethnically Diverse Female Prison Sample, Kristen J. Quinlan

Open Access Master's Theses

Research on female inmates has shown that this population engages in a variety of risky behaviors, like alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and risky sexual activities, and that these problem behaviors seem to share high positive intercorrelations. Problem Behavior Theory (PBT) explains these positive intercorrelations by viewing problem behaviors like alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and risky sexual activities as a single factor, or a single behavioral syndrome. Although the presence of this syndrome has been demonstrated in a variety of ethnically diverse adolescent samples, little work has been done to evaluate its presence in a sample of adults. Adult female inmantes …

Scale Validation Of High School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Catherine Ernst Jan 2003

Scale Validation Of High School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Catherine Ernst

Open Access Master's Theses

Research has shown that teacher attitudes influence their expectations of students and the way in which they interact with them (Brophy & Good, 1972; Brownwell & Pajares, 1999; Bryan 1974; Cook 2001; Harris, Snodgrass, & Rosenthal, 1986; Jordan & Stanovich, 2001; Kuklinski & Weinstein, 2001; Rosenthal, 2002). Ajzen and Fishbein (1969) developed the Theory of Reasoned Action, which proposes that people's behavior is determined by intention and that these intentions are represented in people's attitudes toward the behavior and the perceived norm of that behavior. Beginning with the passage of Public Law 94-142 and the IDEA reauthorization, regular education teachers …

Optimization Of Artificial Neural Networks In Satellite Remote Sensing Da Ta Analysis, Tiegeng Ren Jan 2003

Optimization Of Artificial Neural Networks In Satellite Remote Sensing Da Ta Analysis, Tiegeng Ren

Open Access Master's Theses

Satellite remote sensing data have been broadly applied in extraction of thematic land cover information. The multi-spectral classification is the mostly used method. Traditional supervised classification algorithms are in the category of statistical pattern recognition. Due to the limitations of spatial and spectral resolutions of remotely sensed data, traditional classification has always been challenged in thematic accuracy of land cover mapping. To improve the performance, new technical approaches are in demand.

Artificial Neural Network is one of the emerging approaches in multi-spectral remote sensing and multi-source spatial data handling. However, none-optimized method always met difficulties to get an ideal result. …

Nesting Willow Flycatchers Discovered At Harrison, Arkansas, William C. Holimon, Douglas A. James Jan 2003

Nesting Willow Flycatchers Discovered At Harrison, Arkansas, William C. Holimon, Douglas A. James

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Willow Flycatcher, Empidonax traillii (Audubon), was a newly discovered species when John James Audubon found it at Arkansas Post in 1822. The bird was fairly common in summer in prairie-scrub habitat around Arkansas at least until the 1950s. There after numbers declined until one or two individuals were found occasionally at a single site in Benton County in the late 1980s through 1990s. We found a population consisting of three nesting territories on Baker Prairie Natural Area in Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas. This represents the first confirmed nesting since 1990 and only the second since 1969. A nest with …

Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon Jan 2003

Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon

McNair Scholars Journal

This study examines media overrepresentation and its effects on community perception. The research examines the perception of racial/ethnic involvement in violent crimes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids Police Department arrest reports for violent crime were dichotomized by race/ethnicity and compared to news articles reporting violent crimes found in the Grand Rapids Press to determine if a disparity exists between those data sets. To measure public perceptions, questionnaires were administered concerning racial/ethnic groups and their likelihood to commit violent crimes. The overall intention is to provide a better understanding of root causes of minority disparity within the Criminal Justice System.

Understanding Prehistoric Ceramic Technology From The Grand River Valley, Jeff Chivis Jan 2003

Understanding Prehistoric Ceramic Technology From The Grand River Valley, Jeff Chivis

McNair Scholars Journal

This research focused on understanding the production process of ceramic construction (technological choices of potters) during the Woodland Period in western Michigan. This ultimately provided information regarding choices not only pertaining to style but also to material choices and firing strategies of early societies. The research involved the replication of pottery sherds, which were then compared to a sample of Early Woodland, Middle Woodland, and Late Woodland sherds from sites in the Grand River valley by using petrographic analysis. These sherds were extracted from the Prison Farm (20IA58), Norton Mounds (20KT1), Spoonville (20OT1), and the Converse Mounds sites (20KT2). Technological …

Though Many Have White Skin, Their Veins Flow Of Black Blood: Afro-Argentine Culture And History During The Twentieth Century In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Erika D. Edwards Jan 2003

Though Many Have White Skin, Their Veins Flow Of Black Blood: Afro-Argentine Culture And History During The Twentieth Century In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Erika D. Edwards

McNair Scholars Journal

Although the Afro-Argentine population continued to decline during the twentieth century, the people played an integral role in shaping Argentina’s culture through their contributions in the field of dance, literature, and religion. Unfortunately, their vibrant culture and history are often ignored and overlooked because of Argentina’s subtle efforts to whiten its population. The purpose of this project is three-fold. First, it aims to recognize the survival of the Afro-Argentine community during the twentieth century. Second, it recaptures the means used to preserve African traditions. Finally, it reveals efforts of Afro-Argentine groups such as La Fundación Africa Vive that have dedicated …

Effect Of Water Removal On Introduced Caddisflies From A Tropical Mountain Stream, Mollie D. Mcintosh, Mark Eric Benbow, Albert J. Burky

Biology Faculty Publications

Tropical island streams worldwide are being threatened by existing or proposed dams and diversions. Numerous streams of the Hawaiian Islands have diversions that remove freshwater for human use; however, little research has addressed diversion effects on aquatic insect communities in tropical streams. We studied the effect of water removal by a stream diversion on density and biomass of two introduced Trichoptera, Cheumatopsyche analis (Banks) (Hydropsychidae) and Hydroptila potosina (Buenoa- Soria) (Hydroptilidae), in Iao Stream, Maui, Hawaii, from April-August 2000. Both species seem to have multivoltine life cycles. Pooled Trichoptera (both species) biomass was significantly greater above the diversion (178.3 mg.m-2 …

Accountants' Accountability To Nonclients In Texas., Jessica P. Gomez Jan 2003

Accountants' Accountability To Nonclients In Texas., Jessica P. Gomez

St. Mary's Law Journal

This Comment proposes that accountants be held liable to any foreseeable user of their work product to ensure the deterrence of negligence on their part. Currently, the three main common law theories concerning whether nonclients can sue accountants for negligence are: (1) the privity rule; (2) the Restatement (Second) of Torts § 552; and (3) the foreseeability standard. Many states follow the Restatement approach entitled “Information Negligently Supplied for the Guidance of Others.” Texas imposes liability on accountants but fails to extend protections to third parties who rely upon the accuracy of financial statements. Further, Texas liability does not expose …
