Faculty Publications

Membrane electrode assemblies ~MEAs! made from polyetheretherketone ~PEEK! showed excellent fuel cell performance and thermal stability in the presence of substantial CO at elevated temperatures ~i.e., 120°C! in proton exchange membrane fuel cells ~PEMFCs!. For example, the current from a MEA made from PEEK membrane at 0.6 V and 120°C was 0.50 A/cm2 when run on pure hydrogen and 0.45 A/cm2 when run on reformate ~50% H2 , 1300 ppm CO, and balance N2). The current density from a MEA made from Nafion at 0.6 V and 120°C was 0.61 A/cm2 when run on pure hydrogen. The main difference between …

In What Ways Does Differentiating Reading Instruction By Interest, Through The Use Of Literature Circles, Affect My Reluctant Readers?, Stefana Monachino

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

In this study, the effect of differentiation through interest-based literature circles on reluctant readers was investigated. Four struggling fourth graders, two boys and two girls, were studied. Students were given a choice of books and upon selection were grouped with 4 or 5 students of similar interests. Students decided on daily reading assignments and selected literature circle roles. Literature circles met daily. Teacher observations, audio recordings, student surveys and self-assessments, and parent surveys were used to collect data. The reluctant readers showed increased levels of participation, improved comprehension and word decoding, and elevated levels of confidence. They emerged as leaders …

Creating A Standards-Based Classroom With Low Achieving Students: Teacher And Student Transformation, Edward William Perdue Jan 2003

Creating A Standards-Based Classroom With Low Achieving Students: Teacher And Student Transformation, Edward William Perdue

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

To satisfy the accountability section of the "The No Child Left Behind" Act, New York State requires all school districts to meet and maintain minimum performance standards on the assessments. Therefore, schools are focusing on cultivating standards-based classrooms as a way to best prepare their students to be successful on the assessments. In my research, I attempted to construct a standards-based classroom with a section of my eighth grade mathematics students, a large percentage of whom are children of generational poverty. From my research and observations, I have concluded that a " true" standards-based classroom cannot be achieved without student …

The Elephant In The Corner, Jenny Stockdale

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"At two o'clock on a Sunday morning, no one in their right mind would be sitting on the remainder of a sordid, disco-era recliner, casting sideways glances to four unfamiliar walls, each adorned with outdated college paraphernalia, subconsciously fighting the bitter March air that, without invitation, has ventured under the door and through the cracks of a drafty, filthy, nearly condemned apartment. Yet, here I am, in my left mind apparently. I'm slouched voluntarily in my uneasy chair, balancing on a rusty spring. . . waiting for him."

Evaluation Of Flow Dynamics Through An Adjustable Systemic-Pulmonary Artery Shunt, Timothy Brown Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Flow Dynamics Through An Adjustable Systemic-Pulmonary Artery Shunt, Timothy Brown

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

An adjustable systemic-pulmonary artery (SPA) shunt is being developed that consists of apolytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft with a screw plunger mechanism. This device would allowfull control of flow through SPA shunts used to augment pulmonary blood flow in neonates bornwith single ventricle physiology. The objective of this study is to evaluate the changes this mechanismhas on flow fields for a 4 mm and 5 mm adjustable SPA shunt. Two in vitro models wereexamined; an idealized model with an axisymmetric constriction and a model developed from 3-Dreconstruction of the actual shunt under asymmetric constriction. These models were used to measurethe instantaneous velocity …

Management Of Agitation In Individuals With Dementia: An Animal-Assisted Therapy Approach, Karen L. Tanner Jan 2003

Management Of Agitation In Individuals With Dementia: An Animal-Assisted Therapy Approach, Karen L. Tanner

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Dementia is not a natural and normal part of aging, but rather a symptom of a disease process. Most individuals with dementia experience emotional distress or behavioral problems best summed up by the term agitation. Approximately 90% of individuals with dementing illnesses demonstrate problem behaviors ranging from repetitive verbalizations and wandering to verbal and physical aggression toward self or others. Each evening thousands of older adults in the community and in institutions become agitated, restless, and confused and begin to wander about or scream. This phenomenon is referred to as sundown syndrome, since it occurs in the evening hours after …

From Marxism-Leninism To Ethnicity: The Sideslips Of Ethiopian Elitism, Messay Kebede Jan 2003

From Marxism-Leninism To Ethnicity: The Sideslips Of Ethiopian Elitism, Messay Kebede

Philosophy Faculty Publications

For many scholars, colonialism and neocolonial policies remain the root causes of Africa's numerous impediments to its progress, ranging from the persistence of poverty to the ravages of ethnic conflicts. However, the number of scholars who prefer to ascribe these impediments essentially to the persistence of traditional views and methods and to the lack of reforms radical enough to trigger a sustained process of modernization is not negligible. My position contests this either-or debate and identifies the culprit as the rise of African elitism—a phenomenon implicating the specific effect of colonialism in conjunction with internal African contributions. I take the …

Protestantism And Fundamentalism, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2003

Protestantism And Fundamentalism, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

The term "fundamentalism" has been used to describe a host of religious movements across the globe that are militantly antimodernist, aggressively patriarchal, literalist in their reading of sacred texts, and assiduous in their efforts to draw boundaries between themselves and outsiders. While "Islamic fundamentalism" has received the most attention, particularly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, scholars and journalists have also applied the term to movements within such disparate traditions as Judaism, Sikhism, and Hinduism, as well as to various Christian groups.

There are benefits to understanding fundamentalism as a global movement that grows out of deep-seated and intense …

Exposing "Illusory" Underinsured Motorist Coverage, Greg Munro

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article addresses auto insurers that use the "narrow" Underinsured Motorist Vehicle definition and couples it with a "reducing clause." The article discusses the conflict between what the declarations page promises and the UIM benefit the policy will actually pay and argues that the definition and reducing clause violate the consumer's expectations and defeat the very purpose of UIM coverage causing an injustice to the insured who has been prudent enough to purchase UIM coverage to guard against the tortfeasor who carries minimum limits. The article urges attorneys to persuade the courts in Montana to invalidate the narrow definition and …

Human Resources' Role In Successful Mergers And Acquisitions, Vanessa Loecke Jan 2003

Human Resources' Role In Successful Mergers And Acquisitions, Vanessa Loecke

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

In comparing the success of AOL Time Warner's merger and Hewlett-Packard Compaq's merger, it's easy to see who came out the winner. In comparing their merger strategies, including their focus on HR issues, it's also easy to see why mergers and acquisitions need to be analyzed well in advance and include due diligence, including cultural due diligence, integration planning, and analysis of HR issues, including communication and employee retention. If more companies who are considering merging with or acquiring another company would put as much time as they do money into the merger, and analyze some of the key people-related …

Antenna-Coupled Infrared Focal Plane Array, Francisco Javier Gonzalez Jan 2003

Antenna-Coupled Infrared Focal Plane Array, Francisco Javier Gonzalez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation a new type of infrared focal plan array (IR FPA) was investigated, consisting of antenna-coupled microbolometer fabricated using electron-beam lithography. Four different antenna designs were experimentally demonstrated at 10-micron wavelength: dipole, bowtie, square-spiral, and log-periodic. The main differences between these antenna types were their bandwidth, collection area, angular reception pattern, and polarization. To provide pixel collection areas commensurate with typical IR FPA requirements, two configurations were investigated: a two-dimensional serpentine interconnection of individual IR antennas, and a Fresnel-zone-plate (FZP) coupled to a single-element antenna. Optimum spacing conditions for the two-dimensional interconnect were developed. Increased sensitivity was demonstrated …

Substantive Due Process And The Involuntary Confinement Of Sexually Violent Predators, Wayne A. Logan, Eric S. Janus Jan 2003

Substantive Due Process And The Involuntary Confinement Of Sexually Violent Predators, Wayne A. Logan, Eric S. Janus

Scholarly Publications

Over the past fifty years the Supreme Court has been repeatedly asked to address the constitutionality of civil commitment laws, including laws specifically targeting sexually violent predators (SVPs). The SVP laws have withstood challenge, in each instance redeemed by their putative civil purpose. Today, however, roughly 13 years after the first modern SVP law was enacted by the State of Washington, serious concern exists over whether the laws are fulfilling their civil purpose, or are merely serving as vehicles for impermissible preventive detention.

This Article addresses this question, in the process exploring the viability of the major remaining constitutional basis …

L'Intégration De La Prévention Sst Au Management Des Normes Iso 9000 Par La Macroergonomie : Une Recension Des Écrits Suivie D'Un Projet Pilote, Georges Toulouse
