Analysis Of Flow In A Spray Nozzle With Emphasis On Exiting Jet Free Surface, Ryan M. Mead Nov 2003

Analysis Of Flow In A Spray Nozzle With Emphasis On Exiting Jet Free Surface, Ryan M. Mead

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A conical nozzle with two separate inlets within its top plate is analyzed. One of the inlets is in the center of the top plate, which is free to rotate, whereas the other inlet is positioned away from the center. The fluid entering through the outer inlet slot causes the top plate of the nozzle to spin. Several fluids including FC-77, FC-72, FC-87, and Methanol running at different flow rates were investigated to observe the effect that their particular properties have on the geometry of the fluid's free surface exiting the nozzle. Another variation performed was the geometry of the …

Evaluation Of Pile Driving Lead Section, Kadir Uslu Nov 2003

Evaluation Of Pile Driving Lead Section, Kadir Uslu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Driving piles constitute a large portion of the high-capacity foundations used today. They transfer structural loads to deep bearing strata when adequate surficial soils are not available. The mechanisms required to install these piles generally consist of a hammer, hammer lead, a crane, and various support rigging.

This study focused on lead sections, specifically, one which was manufactured by Berminghammer Foundation Equipment, Inc. The dimensions and strength of a lead section must be capable of supporting both the pile driving hammer and the longest anticipated pile for a given site. The strength of the section must be capable of withstanding …

Edmund Ziemba Interview, 04 November 2003

All interviews

This oral history interview with Edmund Ziemba, conducted by Dan Madigan on November 4, 2003, captures Ziemba's reflections on his childhood and upbringing in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. Ziemba shares vivid memories of growing up in a close-knit, predominantly Eastern European community during the mid-20th century, highlighting the strong bonds formed through shared cultural traditions, community activities, and a mutual respect for neighbors. He discusses the socioeconomic makeup of the area, characterized by hardworking, middle-lower-class families who took pride in their homes and neighborhoods despite financial hardships. Ziemba also recounts the simplicity of childhood entertainment, the importance of …

Rendering Hdr Images, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild Nov 2003

Rendering Hdr Images, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild

Presentations and other scholarship

Color imaging systems are continuously improving, and have now improved to the point of capturing high dynamic range scenes. Unfortunately most commercially available color display devices, such as CRTs and LCDs, are limited in their dynamic range. It is necessary to tone-map, or render, the high dynamic range images in order to display them onto a lower dynamic range device. This paper describes the use of an image appearance model, iCAM, to render high dynamic range images for display. Image appearance models have greater flexibility over dedicated tone-scaling algorithms as they are designed to predict how images perceptually appear, and …

High Throughput Virus-Induced Gene Silencing Implicates Heat Shock Protein 90 In Plant Disease Resistance, Rui Lu, Isabelle Malcuit, Peter Moffett, Maria T. Ruiz, Jack Peart, Ai Jiuan Wu, John P. Rathjen, Abdelhafid Bendahmane, Louise Day, David C. Baulcombe Nov 2003

Faculty Publications

Virus-induced gene silencing was used to assess the function of random Nicotiana benthamiana cDNAs in disease resistance. Out of 4992 cDNAs tested from a normalized library, there were 79 that suppressed a hypersensitive response (HR) associated with Pto-mediated resistance against Pseudomonas syringae. However, only six of these clones blocked the Pto-mediated suppression of P. syringae growth. The three clones giving the strongest loss of Pto resistance had inserts corresponding to HSP90 and also caused loss of Rx-mediated resistance against potato virus X and N-mediated tobacco mosaic virus resistance. The role of HSP90 as a cofactor of disease resistance is associated …

A Closed-Form Dynamic Model Of The Compliant Constant-Force Mechanism Using The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model, Cameron Boyle Nov 2003

A Closed-Form Dynamic Model Of The Compliant Constant-Force Mechanism Using The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model, Cameron Boyle

Theses and Dissertations

A mathematical dynamic model is derived for the compliant constant-force mechanism, based on the pseudo-rigid-body model simplification of the device. The compliant constant-force mechanism is a slider mechanism incorporating large-deflection beams, which outputs near-constant-force across the range of its designed deflection. The equation of motion is successfully validated with empirical data from five separate mechanisms, comprising two configurations of compliant constant-force mechanism. The dynamic model is cast in generalized form to represent all possible configurations of compliant constant-force mechanism. Deriving the dynamic equation from the pseudo-rigid-body model is useful because every configuration is represented by the same model, so a …

Genetic Changes In Natural Populations Caused By The Release Of Cultured Fishes, Michael Dominic Tringali Nov 2003

Genetic Changes In Natural Populations Caused By The Release Of Cultured Fishes, Michael Dominic Tringali

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Genetic changes likely occur in wild fish populations as a consequence of interactions with cultured fish, but to what extent do those changes threaten the maintenance of natural genetic diversity and population viability? Following a review and categorization of numerous processes suspected of being agents of post-release genetic change in recipient wild populations (Chapter 1), I focus on risks relating to the magnitude and duration of releases -- but with a twist. That is, I assume that the mean fitness of released, cultured individuals does not differ from that of the recipient natural population. Throughout, attention is devoted to potential …

Predicting Drag Polars For Micro Air Vehicles, Mark Elden Luke Nov 2003

Predicting Drag Polars For Micro Air Vehicles, Mark Elden Luke

Theses and Dissertations

Drag polars for three Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) were measured at Reynolds numbers of 70,000, 50,000, 30,000, and 10,000 and compared to predictions generated using the classical approach. The MAVs tested had different configurations and aspect ratios varying from 1.2 to 1.6 and ratios of wetted surface area to planform area from 2.6 to 3.9.

A force balance was used to measure the lift and drag on the MAVs at angles of attack ranging from -5 degrees (or -10 degrees) to 10 degrees. The force balance allowed the MAVs to rotate in the pitching axis. The MAV angle of attack …
