On The International Game Developers Association's Second Academic Summit, Gareth Schott Oct 2003

On The International Game Developers Association's Second Academic Summit, Gareth Schott

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This year a broad range of academics journeyed to San Jose to join game developers in attendance at the second International Game Developers Association's (IGDA) Academic Summit, organized and run by the small but productive IGDA Educational Committee. The main focus of this year's event was to shape the nature of future relationships between the academic community and the game development industry. Over the two-day event structured discussions and group-work were used effectively to generate key issues and debates relevant to a) theoretical research and the study of games, b) curriculum and instruction and c) commercial applications of …

Elaboration Versus Fragmentation: Distinguishing Between Self-Complexity And Self-Concept Differentiation, Catherine Lutz, Scott R. Ross Oct 2003

Elaboration Versus Fragmentation: Distinguishing Between Self-Complexity And Self-Concept Differentiation, Catherine Lutz, Scott R. Ross

Psychology Faculty Publications

While theorists have argued that self-concept differentiation (SCD) (i.e., the lack of interrelatedness of roles) is an important precursor to mental health problems (Donahue et al., 1993), self-complexity (i.e., having more self-aspects and maintaining greater distinction among self-aspects) is seen as a cognitive buffer against the deleterious effects of stress (Linville, 1985, 1987). Using a sample of 260 college students, the current study was designed to empirically validate the distinction between these seemingly similar constructs. As predicted, SCD and self-complexity demonstrated opposite relationships with indices of psychological distress. Whereas SCD was positively related to depression, loneliness, and dissociation, and negatively …

Etsu Today - Fall 2003, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

I wish to tell you about organizational growth, as we experience it on the campus of ETSU. Although much institutional energy was expended this year in recovering from the government shutdown at the conclusion of the previous fiscal year and in re-orienting the university to manage the massive budget cuts that followed, many significant achievements took place during 2002-2003, due in large part to the strong partnerships that we have forged over the years and the attitude of the fine faculty, staff, and students at ETSU. It took creativity, unconventional thinking, and cooperation to reach closure on the 2003- 2004 …

"You Can't Always Get What You Want": The Territorial Scope Of An Independent Quebec, Peter Radan Oct 2003

"You Can't Always Get What You Want": The Territorial Scope Of An Independent Quebec, Peter Radan

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In Reference Re Secession of Quebec, the Court identified Quebec's borders as a critical issue in any secession negotiation. Canadian constitutional law requires changes to existing borders, particularly if the Aboriginal communities of Ungava maintain their opposition to becoming part of an independent Quebec, for three reasons. First, an independent Quebec has no right to territory gained in 1898 and 1912 because those territories were granted on the condition that Quebec remain in the federation. Second, the existence of constitutionally entrenched fiduciary obligations owed by the Crown to Quebec's Aboriginal peoples gives the latter a veto over a constitutional amendment …

The Power Of Interfacing Departments In Shaping B2b Customer Satisfaction, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash C. Mehta Oct 2003

The Power Of Interfacing Departments In Shaping B2b Customer Satisfaction, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash C. Mehta

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Extant research identifies service quality and service encounter perceptions as the key determinants of satisfaction. However, no study in a business-to-business environment has examined the simultaneous effect of these two determinants on overall satisfaction. Hence, we do not know which of these two determinants has a stronger impact on service satisfaction. We investigated this issue by collecting data from shipping managers of several firms in Singapore that used the services of ocean freight shipping companies. Results of path analysis indicate that perceptions of service encounters have a relatively stronger impact compared to service quality. Implications of these results are discussed.

Creating A Geographical Information System For Freshwater Crabs And Fishes In Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, Walter R.T. Witschey, Panos S. Economidis, Dimitra Bobori

Virginia Journal of Science

A geographical information system (GIS) for freshwater crabs and fishes in Greece was created in response to the European Environmental Agency's (EEA) biodiversity initiative for European Union countries. A total of 1931 collections, made with seines, dipnets, and backpack electroshockers in 32 drainages of Greece, yielded 126 species of fishes and crabs in 2,359 data records including species, latitude, longitude, drainage, prefecture, and locality, 731 also include stream order, elevation, gradient, stream width and depth, pH, temperature, and distance to river mouth. Our GIS indicates current distributions of species, species rich and poor areas, anomalous species distributions, areas warranting further …

Multi-Player Computer Gaming: 'Better Than Playing (Pc Games) With Yourself', Melanie Swalwell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In the August 2002 issue of Business 2.0, Geoff Keighley sketches the profits that companies such as Sony, Disney, Microsoft and others hope to make, as they enter into, or expand their existing, online multiplayer gaming ventures. With Everquest attracting some 150,000 players within six months of launching, each of whom was prepared to pay $10 a month to participate in online multiplay, it is easy to see why those in the industry are excited at having discovered such an apparently reliable revenue stream, with Keighley citing Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment President, Yair Landau's claim that This is …

Reflections On Augusta: Judicial, Legislative And Economic Approaches To Private Race And Gender Consciousness, Scott R. Rosner

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In light of the recent controversy surrounding Augusta National Golf Club's exclusionary membership policy, this Article highlights the myriad incentives and disincentives that Augusta and similar clubs have for reforming such policies. The author acknowledges the economic importance of club membership in many business communities and addresses the extent to which club members' claims of rights of privacy and free association are valid. The Article also considers the potential of judicial action in promoting the adoption of more inclusive membership policy; the state action doctrine and the First Amendment right to freedom of association are discussed as frameworks under which …

On Katherine Frank's G-Strings And Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars And Male Desire, Kristen Schilt Oct 2003

On Katherine Frank's G-Strings And Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars And Male Desire, Kristen Schilt

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Katherine Frank's book, G-Strings and Sympathy, provides an anthropological look into the fantasies of male strip club regulars in a Southern City she calls Laurelton. Turning the gaze onto the gazers, a group left unstudied in the majority of literature on sex work, Frank unpacks how trips to the strip club are closely linked with discourses about sexuality, consumption and masculinity. Through six years of participant observation at a variety of clubs in Laurelton and in-depth interviews with thirty self-professed strip club regulars, Frank delves into not only why these men attend strip clubs but how these visits …
