A Comparison Of Community Members' Preferences To Viewing Two Different Approaches To Therapy., Sherry Lynn Cain Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Community Members' Preferences To Viewing Two Different Approaches To Therapy., Sherry Lynn Cain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The perceptions of community members on a traditional Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) counseling approach and a multi-sensory REBT counseling approach were examined in this study. A total of 98 individuals, who were the staff and parents recruited from a community Headstart program, participated in the study. Simulated counseling sessions of the two approaches were presented to the community members through eleven minute videotapes. After watching the counseling sessions, individuals rated the sessions with the Counseling Style Preference Form and the Credibility/Expectancy Questionnaire. They also were asked to write comments about each of the counseling sessions. Paired sample T-tests yielded …

The Craft And Concepts Of Interpretation: A Look At How National Park Service Interpreters Reveal And Facilitate Opportunities For Connections., Wei-Li Jasmine Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Interpretive Development Program (IDP) of the National Park Service (NPS) develops and maintains the national standards for interpretation by providing professional development opportunities and administrating a peer review certification process of interpretive products. This study explores the little-understood phenomena of how opportunities for intellectual and emotional connections between the resource and the visitor are created by NPS interpreters. Analyzing the program content from forty-nine interpretive talks and writing examples submitted to the IDP for review from July to November of 2001, the researcher has identified four interpretive strategies interpreters used in developing opportunities for intellectual and emotional connections with …

A Qualitative Study Of A Capacity -Building Professional Development Experience., Theodora R. Cox

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Capacity building in schools is of great interest to educators and policy makers who see an ongoing need for improvement in schools. This qualitative study investigates a professional development program provided in a school system to determine: (1) the dynamics of the experience that inspired participants to want to change practices to better facilitate student learning; (2) how selected educators exemplified that inspiration in their daily professional experience; and (3) how the training has impacted classrooms, schools, and the school system. The study took the shape of a funnel. Wiersma (1995) explains that the funnel approach begins with a general …

Towards A Theology Of Worship: An Application At The Oakwood College Seventh-Day Adventist Church, John S. Nixon Jan 2003

Towards A Theology Of Worship: An Application At The Oakwood College Seventh-Day Adventist Church, John S. Nixon

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. There is an ongoing conflict between the members of the Oakwood College Church regarding what constitutes appropriate and meaningful worship. The conflict is most pronounced between the church’s two largest constituencies, college students and senior citizens. The lack of unity on this issue hinders both nurture and outreach efforts on behalf of the church and is a constant source of member dissatisfaction. Initial observations suggest that the problem is traceable, at least in part, to the lack of a clear understanding as to what should be the basis for determining corporate worship practice.

Method. This study presents a review …

A Spiritual Master Plan For Spicer Memorial College, Mohanraj W. Israel Jan 2003

A Spiritual Master Plan For Spicer Memorial College, Mohanraj W. Israel

Doctor of Ministry Projects

In the face of required expenditures for competitive higher education and the growing challenges of quality Christian training, the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church is concerned about accountability in spiritual development and outcomes assessment. The General Conference Annual Council of 1996 voted the “Total Commitment to God” document. This document focuses on developing at each tertiary institution a comprehensive Spiritual Master Plan, proposed by the faculty and approved by the board, that identifies the spiritual truths and values, both cognitive and relational, which the institution is committed to share with its students, and to comprehensively identify the opportunities through which those …

Surface Mines As Landscape Features: Contrasting Microclimate And Forest Composition Among Open, Edge And Interior., Sheila A. Kazar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Surface mining disturbs thousands of hectares of forest every year in the Appalachian region resulting in the creation of forest edges. In this study, variability in air temperature and moisture, soil temperature and moisture, photosynthetically active radiation and wind velocity are quantified for open, edge and interior environments of reclaimed surface mines in north central West Virginia. Tree species composition, soil pH and compaction were also examined. Mean daily air and soil temperature, wind velocity and photosynthetically active radiation are lower, and soil and air moisture higher inside the forest than in the open or at the edge. Soil temperature, …

Un Seminario Sobre Mayordomía Para La Unión Mexicana Del Norte De Los Adventistas Del Séptimo Día, Jorge Rodolfo Dzul

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The doctrine of Christian stewardship is important for the believer and the the church. This biblical teaching covers all of the Christian experience, yet its main challenge is in its relation with money. The purpose of this dissertation was to provide a better understanding of this doctrine among Seventh-day Adventists and to encourage them to be “good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

The methodology of this dissertation was to examine existing Protestant literature, as well as Seventh-day Adventist writings, on the topic. The theoretical section of the study covers the nature of stewardship, its biblical …

A Case Study Of Four School Library Media Specialists' Leadership In Louisiana., Linda Jean Underwood Jan 2003

A Case Study Of Four School Library Media Specialists' Leadership In Louisiana., Linda Jean Underwood

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to understand the daily activities of effective school library media specialists in an elementary school, middle school, and high school in a Louisiana parish, non-church, public school system through qualitative research using interviews, observation field notes, and written documentation from the three schools. The importance of the study was that there is little known about the leadership role of the school library media specialist and the role of the school library media specialist. Further, the literature concerning effective schools and effective school library media specialists is separate. The study had four conclusions. First, an …

The Journey From High School To College: Do Collaborative Connections Improve Student Transition?, Billie A. Unger Jan 2003

The Journey From High School To College: Do Collaborative Connections Improve Student Transition?, Billie A. Unger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Each year, thousands of students enter postsecondary education unprepared for the many academic, social, and emotional challenges they will face. Collaborative programs between secondary and postsecondary institutions have therefore developed as one way to address these issues. Although numerous studies have focused on quantitative evaluation of collaborative programs, few have included qualitative analysis of the opinions and ideas of those students who were involved in the efforts. The purpose of this study was to gauge the effect of student participation in pre-college collaborative experiences on students' transition from secondary to postsecondary education. Within the context of Schlossberg's Transition Theory, the …

Examining Stages In Curriculum Change: Implementation Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam)., Ester L. Verhovsek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The practice of medicine is changing radically and there is a substantial gap in the practice of medicine and the current curricular models used. As higher education faculty attempt major curriculum transformations, it is crucial to examine the various influences and their ability to progress from the initiation stage to adoption. The purpose of this study was to identify the external and internal influences that most affected the successful transition from the initiation to the adoption of a CAM curriculum change. These influences were examined within the context of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) so administrators and faculty will have …

The Influence Of Psychological Separation And Maternal Attachment On Career Choice Commitment In College Seniors., Lasandra R. Ward Jan 2003

The Influence Of Psychological Separation And Maternal Attachment On Career Choice Commitment In College Seniors., Lasandra R. Ward

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Measures of maternal attachment, psychological separation from mother, and career choice commitment behavior (individuation markers) were taken from a sample predominantly composed of senior-level undergraduate students. Responses on the IPPA-R were used to categorize participants descriptively according to their maternal attachment style. Attachment style groups were labeled as Secure, Ambivalent, and Avoidant. Statistical procedures included MANOVA and stepwise multiple regression analyses. Differences were detected among the three maternal attachment style groups on four psychological separation variables. Some variables of psychological separation emerged as predictors of career choice commitment and tendency to foreclose. However, a large portion of the variance of …

I Yelled At My Mother: Narrative Introspection Into The Multifaceted Emotions Of Sympathy & Compassion In Care-Giving, Elizabeth A. Curry Jan 2003

I Yelled At My Mother: Narrative Introspection Into The Multifaceted Emotions Of Sympathy & Compassion In Care-Giving, Elizabeth A. Curry

Library Presentations & Publications

Sympathy, empathy and compassion have been widely studied in many different disciplines but there has been little agreement among researchers. Studies often address the process of giving sympathy but little has been done with the process of receiving sympathy or the complex intersection of the two. This paper is an autoethnography that explores the relational way we develop an understanding of sympathy and compassion. I use an introspective process to study how I have come to understand compassion and sympathy in care giving for my mother. I seek a different approach to compassion and sympathy as a social process of …

Sm 601, 602, 603 Supervised Ministry Handbook, Robert G. Tuttle

Syllabi

Supervised Ministries is a required core component of the academic curriculum. It aims to bridge the gap between strictly academic theology and ministry practice. It integrates the light of the chapel, classroom and library with the field laboratory. That is, we want to reduce the gap between learned theology and internalized theology which applies itself to Christian experience and ministry practice. As John Wesley, quoting an ancient, quipped, “God made divinity practical”.

Economics, Biology, And Culture: Hodgson On History, Alexander J. Field Jan 2003

Economics, Biology, And Culture: Hodgson On History, Alexander J. Field

Economics

This book addresses what the author claims, with considerable justification, to be the foremost challenge confronting the social and behavioral sciences today: the problem of historical specificity. Hodgson poses the question by asking whether we need different theories to understand social and economic behavior in different societies at different stages of their development. He answers the question in the affirmative, and criticizes the economics profession for suggesting that there is one universal model or theory equally suited to all economies and societies at all times. He faults the profession further for no longer worrying much or conducting serious debate about …

Improving Design And Performance Of Group Lending: Suggestions From Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Barbara Mknelly Jan 2003

Improving Design And Performance Of Group Lending: Suggestions From Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Barbara Mknelly

Economics

We summarize lessons learned by a credit program for women in Burkina Faso. Three observations are made regarding program design: 1) high membership turnover means mutual guarantee groups should be smaller and more central to non-repayment penalties; 2) high turnover in economic activities implies more training in best practices and more variety and experimentation in credit and savings mechanisms; and 3) high degrees of stocking activity suggests the need to develop instruments to mitigate commodity price risk at the individual and program level. Three observations are made regarding program implementation: 1) be more consistent in the treatment of debts of …

Les Indicateurs De Lésions Indemnisées En Santé Et En Sécurité Du Travail Au Québec : Analyse Par Profession En 1995-1997, Patrice Duguay, François Hébert, Paul Massicotte

Portraits statistiques
