Environmental Characteristics And Benthic Invertebrate Assemblages In Colorado Mountain Lakes, Brenda Moraska Lafrancois, Daren M. Carlisle, Koren R. Nydick, Brett M. Johnson, Jill S. Baron

Western North American Naturalist

Twenty-two high-elevation lakes (>3000 m) in Rocky Mountain National Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Colorado, were surveyed during summer 1998 to explore relationships among benthic invertebrates, water chemistry (particularly nitrate concentrations), and other environmental variables. Water samples were collected from the deepest portion of each lake and analyzed for ions and other water chemistry parameters. Benthic invertebrates were collected from the littoral zone using both a sweep net and Hess sampler. Physical and geographical measurements were derived from maps. Relationships among benthic invertebrate assemblages and environmental variables were examined using canonical correspondence analysis, and the importance of sampling …

Androgen-Induced Recruitment Of Rna Polymerase Ii To A Nuclear Receptor–P160 Coactivator Complex, Maggie C. Louie, Hong Qiong Yang, Ai-Hong Ma, Wei Xu, June X. Zou, Hsing-Jien Kung, Hong-Wu Chen

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The androgen receptor, like other nuclear receptors, activates target genes by binding to hormone-responsive enhancers. Here we demonstrate that androgen induces robust recruitment of androgen receptor, members of the p160 coactivator family, and CREB-binding protein/p300 specifically at the distant enhancer of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) gene. Unexpectedly, we found that RNA polymerase II (Pol II) is directly recruited to the enhancer in a hormone-dependent manner, independent of the proximal promoter, and that the isolated PSA enhancer can mediate efficient androgen induction of transcription. Inhibition of the Pol II carboxyl-terminal domain kinase activity with low concentrations of flavopiridol blocks Pol II transfer …

Functional Annotation And Dendrogram Representation Of Gene Expression Clustering Results, Antoneta Petkova Vladimirova Jan 2003

Functional Annotation And Dendrogram Representation Of Gene Expression Clustering Results, Antoneta Petkova Vladimirova

Theses

The advances in genomic sciences have created vast amounts of gene expression data. To make sense of the expression information, various techniques have been applied. Clustering is among the unsupervised methods used to group the results according to gene expression level. Dendrogram visualization allows graphical representation of the clustering. The aim of this thesis is to enhance these techniques by adding another layer of functionality, namely, annotating the dendrogram with gene functional information. Presented is an application which visualizes yeast clustering results as a dendrogram along with color-coded gene keyword annotations. Gene keyword information was extracted from a major biological …

Examination Of Estimated 24 Hour Period Of Dendritic Cell Maturation, Sarah Reeves Jan 2003

Examination Of Estimated 24 Hour Period Of Dendritic Cell Maturation, Sarah Reeves

Capstone Research Projects

Dendritic cells (DCs) are responsible for antigen uptake, presentation, and stimulation of T cells responsible for recognizing these antigens. During the immature stage DCs endocytose fluids and particles from the surrounding interstitial environment, such as the skin, deeper organs, and mucous membranes. Maturity is reached after antigen uptake stimulates the loading of foreign peptides on their major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC II) molecules, which then are expressed on the cell surface. DCs cease antigen uptake and presentation at some point after the uptake of a maturation stimulus (antigen); at this point the DC is fully mature. It has been …

Growth, Reproductive Phenology, And Population Structure In Syntrichia Caninervis, Mary Lynn Bonine Jan 2003

Growth, Reproductive Phenology, And Population Structure In Syntrichia Caninervis, Mary Lynn Bonine

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Syntrichia caninervis is a dioicous bryophyte of the arid Southwest. It exhibits a phenology and growth rate similar to the related species Tortula inermis. Mean growth rate was 0.29 mm +/- 0.04 (mean and S.D.). Expressing stems had a significantly greater growth rate than non-expressing stems, but no difference was detectable between males and females. The pattern of gametangial maturation is one of rapid perichaetial development, initiating in September and becoming receptive in March; and protracted perigonial development, initiating in October, developing to an immature state prior to over-summering, and completing maturation during the second fall and spring, with sperm …

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The diseases and virulence genes associated with Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are characterized incompletely. We analyzed, by polymerase chain reaction, 82 STEC isolates collected prospectively in Montana and profiled associated illnesses by patient chart review. All E. coli O157:H7 contained stx2-group genes, as well as eae, iha, espA, and ehxA; 84% contained stx1. Non-O157:H7 STEC less frequently contained stx1( P = .046 ), stx2 (P < .001), iha (P < .001), eae, and espA (P = .039 for both), were isolated less often from patients treated in emergency departments (P = .022), and …

Assessment Of The Rhode Island Coastal Lagoon Ecosystem, Kathryn Hale Ford Jan 2003

Assessment Of The Rhode Island Coastal Lagoon Ecosystem, Kathryn Hale Ford

Open Access Dissertations

The health of the Rhode Island coastal lagoon ecosystem is of importance due to its critical role as a wildlife habitat and recreation destination. As human population continues to expand along the coast, this ecosystem will receive increasing pressure from contaminants. By examining how the lagoons have changed in the past, we can postulate what variables are linked to change. Current conditions need to be thoroughly studied to provide a baseline with which to study future change, as well as to determine areas of concern in the lagoons. In order to understand how the ecosystem responds to such pressures, a …

Life Cycle Of A Torrenticolous Hawaiian Chironomid (Telmatogeton Torrenticola): Stream Flow And Microhabitat Effects, Mark Eric Benbow, Albert J. Burky, C. M. Way Jan 2003

Life Cycle Of A Torrenticolous Hawaiian Chironomid (Telmatogeton Torrenticola): Stream Flow And Microhabitat Effects, Mark Eric Benbow, Albert J. Burky, C. M. Way

Biology Faculty Publications

In this study we documented the instar densities and life cycle of Telmatogeton torrenticola Terry (Chironomidae : Telmatogetoninae) from Kinihapai Stream, Maui, Hawaii. Greatest larval densities of this midge are found on substrates of high velocity, shallow flows of cascades, and splash zones of waterfalls, with lower densities in riffles. In the summer of 1994 we compared the effects of two microhabitats (termed optimal and suboptimal) on inter-instar density and relative abundance. In a second year (1995), we evaluated the effect of long-term reduced stream flow on these variables only in optimal microhabitats. A significant reduction in stream flow from …

Dark Wilderness A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Idea Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia E. Seiser Jan 2003

Dark Wilderness A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Idea Of Cave Wilderness, Patricia E. Seiser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It has been almost forty years since the passage of the 1964 Wilderness Act and the establishment of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Forty years later, we still have not seen a wilderness that is not a surface environment. There exist neither subterranean nor marine wilderness areas. Efforts on behalf of cave wilderness have focused on the 1964 Wilderness Act legal definition of wilderness. Perhaps what is required is a different concept for the establishment of cave wilderness. This study explored the idea of cave wilderness from a human dimension perspective, via focus groups, using stakeholders from two cave regions …

Spawning Aggregation Sites Of Snapper And Grouper Species (Lutjanidae And Serranidae) On The Insular Shelf Of Cuba, Rodolfo Claro, Kenyon C. Lindeman Jan 2003

Spawning Aggregation Sites Of Snapper And Grouper Species (Lutjanidae And Serranidae) On The Insular Shelf Of Cuba, Rodolfo Claro, Kenyon C. Lindeman

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Twenty-one spawning aggregation sites on the Cuban shelf were identified for eight species of snappers (Lutjanus) and groupers (Epinephelus and Mycteroperca) using information from experienced fishers and field studies. Three sites are on the southeastern shelf, eight on the southwest shelf bordering the Golfo de Batabanó, two in the northwest, and eight in the north-central region along the margins of the Archipiélago de Sabana-Camagüey. These numbers may reflect sampling effort as much as absolute aggregation numbers, with most effort concentrated in the southwest and north-central regions. Additional studies, particularly field assessments, are needed to determine the …

Agronomic And Molecular Characterization Of Louisiana Native Spartina Alterniflora Accessions, Alicia Beatriz Ryan Jan 2003

Agronomic And Molecular Characterization Of Louisiana Native Spartina Alterniflora Accessions, Alicia Beatriz Ryan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coastal erosion and wetland deterioration are serious and widespread problems affecting Louisiana’s coastal zone. The application of agronomic and molecular techniques for improving crop species is well documented. However, these have not been routinely applied to species of ecological and environmental value. Spartina alterniflora is used extensively for shoreline protection and tidal marsh restoration because of its aggressive spreading habit and tolerance to salinity. The progress of marsh revegetation projects is limited by the costs and labor associated with vegetative propagation of Spartina. Hence, a breeding program was initiated to develop improved smooth cordgrass accessions with superior seed producing ability …

Dysthymia And Major Depression : Distinct Conditions Or Different Stages Along A One-Dimensional Continuum?, Patrick Pössel Jan 2003

Dysthymia And Major Depression : Distinct Conditions Or Different Stages Along A One-Dimensional Continuum?, Patrick Pössel

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Until recently researchers have discussed whether dysthymia and major depression represent distinct conditions or rather different stages along a one-dimensional continuum. This study addresses this question by examining the belief systems of normal, dysthymic, and depressed participants. We explored participants‘ beliefs and differentiated between positive and negative as well as between core and peripheral beliefs. Normal participants showed fewer negative beliefs and negative peripheral beliefs than the dysthymic group, whereas normal participants had more positive beliefs and positive core beliefs as well as fewer negative core beliefs than the depressed group. The hypothesized one-dimensional continuum could not be demonstrated for …

Ecotoxicological Research At Dit, Maria Davoren, Colm O'Dowd, Sharon Ni Shuilleabhain Jan 2003

Ecotoxicological Research At Dit, Maria Davoren, Colm O'Dowd, Sharon Ni Shuilleabhain

Level 3

The term ecotoxicology, first defined by René Truhart in 1969, essentially describes the study of the harmful effects of chemicals upon ecosystems and understanding the pathways by which these deleterious effects are elicited (Walker et al., 1996). Thousands of new chemicals are produced each year requiring ecotoxicological evaluation, in addition to existing chemicals for which limited or no ecotoxicity data exists. Increased public concern regarding the impact of these anthropogenic chemicals on the environment, prompted DIT to expand its research portfolio to include the niche research area of aquatic ecotoxicology. DIT’s Radiation Science Centre was officially renamed …

Genome Analysis: Mutation Analysis Using Near Infrared Laser-Induced Fluorescence (Nir-Lif) And Single Molecule Detection In Microfluidic Devices, Musundi Ben Wabuyele

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A number of genotyping methods have been developed for mutation analysis, each of which has its own unique advantage. DNA amplification via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) provides an unlimited supply of material for subsequent genetic analysis even in case where only a single copy of the DNA molecule is present in the sample. Research presented in this dissertation first examines the efficiency of in vitro amplification of single copy DNA with subsequent sequencing analysis of PCR product. The PCR products (amplicons) were investigated for possible alteration, distortions or mutations due to the amplification process. The sequencing data for single copy …
