An Introductory Lesson Plan To The Flora And Fauna Of The Monteverde Cloud Forest, December 2003, Amanda Rocklet
An Introductory Lesson Plan To The Flora And Fauna Of The Monteverde Cloud Forest, December 2003, Amanda Rocklet
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The result of this project is a mini-course lesson plan which can be used at the Cloud Forest School-Centro de Educación Creativa (C.E.C,). The mini course lesson plan will be used in seventh and eighth grade classes to teach the local taxa of Monteverde. Enclosed are six Power Point presentations, six interactive activity plans, six field guides, and a list of teacher resources. I expect this mini course to reinforce the C.E.C.'s environmental education curriculum while also taking into account teacher turnover and lack of resources.
Spatial Distribution Patterns Of Mistletoe (Antidaphne Viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae, And Phoradendron Undulatum: Viscaceae) On Psidium Guajava (Mrytaceae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Matthew Greenfield
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Spatial distributions of mistletoe are noticeably clustered but unexamined in Monteverde, Costa Rica. To better understand their spatial structure, I examined the dispersion of two species of epiphytic mistletoe (Antidaphne viscoidea: Eremolepidaceae and Phoradendron undulatum: Viscaceae) within and between host trees. Six sites on one hill in Cañitas, Costa Rica were surveyed for data relating to dispersion structure (nearest neighbor distance and frequency within host trees). Additional study was done on the spatial dispersion on the host tree Psidium guajava, and it was found to have clustered dispersions. Indices of dispersion and tests comparing observed results to Poisson distributions showed …
N-Thiolated Β-Lactams: Chemistry And Biology Of A Novel Class Of Antimicrobial Agents For Mrsa, Timothy E. Long
N-Thiolated Β-Lactams: Chemistry And Biology Of A Novel Class Of Antimicrobial Agents For Mrsa, Timothy E. Long
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
N-Methylthio beta-lactams represent a promising new family of antibacterial agents whose in vitro activity is confined largely to Staphylococcus species, including multidrug-resistant forms of S. aureus. Originally developed in the 1980's for use as synthetic intermediates, N-methylthio beta-lactams have recently been shown in these laboratories to possess intriguing biological properties which are addressed in Chapters I-IV. In terms of the antibacterial activities, the structural features and species specificities exhibited by these compounds are unlike those of any existing family of beta-lactam drugs. The lactams seem to exert their effects intracellularly, requiring passage of the bioactive species through the …

Computer Science Technical Reports
High-throughput NMR structural biology and NMR structural genomics pose a fascinating set of geometric challenges. A key bottleneck in NMR structural biology is the resonance assignment problem. We seek to accelerate protein NMR resonance assignment and structure determination by exploiting a priori structural information. In particular, a method known as Nuclear Vector Replacement (NVR) has been proposed as a method for solving the assignment problem given a priori structural information [24,25]. Among several different kinds of input data, NVR uses a particular type of NMR data known as residual dipolar couplings (RDCs). The basic physics of residual dipolar couplings tells …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Parasitology has a rich tradition of studies linking taxonomy, ecology, and life cycles and development. This tradition has produced an enormous amount of empirical evidence demonstrating that parasites form highly integrated reproductive-developmental-ecological systems that are highly persistent through space and time. As well, phylogenetic studies of parasites, especially of parasitic platyhelminths, represent 1 of the most progressive areas of systematic biology. Consequently, parasitologists should be at the forefront of research in evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) and integrative biology, and parasite systems should be model systems of choice for those research programs. Species of the digenean, Alloglossidium, provide a superb …

An Improved Nuclear Vector Replacement Algorithm For Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Assignment, Christopher James Langmead, Bruce Randall Donald
An Improved Nuclear Vector Replacement Algorithm For Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Assignment, Christopher James Langmead, Bruce Randall Donald
Computer Science Technical Reports
We report an improvement to the Nuclear Vector Replacement (NVR) algorithm for high-throughput Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) resonance assignment. The new algorithm improves upon our earlier result in terms of accuracy and computational complexity. In particular, the new NVR algorithm assigns backbone resonances without error (100% accuracy) on the same test suite examined in [Langmead and Donald J. Biomol. NMR 2004], and runs in $O(n^{5/2} \log {(cn)})$ time where $n$ is the number of amino acids in the primary sequence of the protein, and $c$ is the maximum edge weight in an integer-weighted bipartite graph.
Ranked Set Sampling Based On Binary Water Quality Data With Covariates, Paul Kvam
Ranked Set Sampling Based On Binary Water Quality Data With Covariates, Paul Kvam
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
A ranked set sample (RSS) is composed of independent order statistics, formed by collecting and ordering independent subsamples, then measuring only one item from each subsample. If the cost of sampling is dominated by data measurement rather than collection or ranking, the RSS technique is known to be superior to ordinary sampling. Experiments based on binary data are not designed to exploit the advantages of ranked set sampling because categorical data typically are as easily measured as ranked, making RSS methods impractical. However, in some environmental and biological studies, the success probability of a bivariate outcome is related to one …
Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 3 - Early Life History Of Abalone (Haliotis Rubra, H. Laevigata): Settlement, Survival And Early Growth. Final Report For Frdc Project 1998/306, Dr Sabine Daume
Fisheries Research Contract Reports
Australian abalone fisheries produce a high value, export-orientated products that provided 60% of the world supply in 1994 (Fleming, 2000). With wild abalone fisheries declining in countries worldwide, the interest in aquaculture products has increased substantially. The world production of abalone from aquaculture in 1999 was approximately 7,775 tonnes with only 89 tonnes (ca. 1%) being produced in Australia (Fleming, 2000). Abalone farming is expected to develop into a major industry and is a significant investment opportunity (McNamara, Victorian Aquaculture Strategy, May 1997). Future production from the numerous farms and sites either established, under construction or approved in Australia, could …
Development Of Novel Nicotinic Receptor Mediated Therapeutic Agents: Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Epibatidine Analogs And The First Total Synthesis Of Anabasamine And Related Analogs, Stassi Dimaggio
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to search for a more selective, less toxic neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor analgesic agent in comparison to epibatidine, a series of analogs with hybrid structures of epibatidine and ABT-594 were designed and synthesized. The 1-(pyridyloxymethyl)-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane ring systems were furnished via an intramolecular cyclization from a trans 1, 4 disubstitituted amino-cyclohexane derivative. The functionalized cyclohexane ring was formed via a [4+2] Diels-Alder cyclization reaction between the acetamidoacrylate and Danishefsky's diene. These 1- (pyridyloxymethyl)-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane ring systems were then tested in vitro as potential á4â2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor ligands with high potency and selectivity. In addition, a series of rigid …

Fabrication Of Cell Culture Scaffolds Using Micro/Nanotechnologies To Study The Attachment And Alignment Of Smooth Muscle Cells, Mengyan Li
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation elaborates the design and fabrication of in vitro cell culture scaffolds using microfabrication and electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly (LbL) technologies, and develops the so-called layer-by-layer lift-off (LbL-LO) technique to control surface topography, surface properties, and underlying architectures of the scaffolds. Smooth muscle cells were cultured on the fabricated scaffolds with gelatin, fibronectin, and polyelectrolytes (PSS, PDDA, PAH, and PEI) as surface materials, multilayer polyelectrolytes as architectures, deposited in strip- and square-patterns. It was found that the exposed surface materials, which have different charge, hydrophobicity, and chemical structure (e.g., amino acid sequence), affect the adhesion of smooth muscle cells. Cells …

Sustaining The Economic Rent Of Oceanic Resources: The Case Of Marine Protected Areas, Paul Hallwood
Economics Working Papers
This paper investigates economic aspects of marine protected areas (MPAs) that are closely related to the underlying marine biota. Many marine scientists recognize that enough is now known about the marine biology for the scientific siting of MPAs to protect marine environments that create associated economic values. Marine scientists have identified several objectives of MPAs. These include protection of genetic and biodiversity, increase in population levels and structures (e.g., age, size, fecundity), enrichment of ecosystems by promoting species interactions, and the protection of continental shelf landscapes from invasive human actions. Indeed, some marine scientists and fisheries economists view MPAs as …

Life Cycle Of A Torrenticolous Hawaiian Chironomid (Telmatogeton Torrenticola): Stream Flow And Microhabitat Effects, M. Eric Benbow, Albert J. Burky, Carl M. Way
Biology Faculty Publications
In this study we documented the instar densities and life cycle of Telmatogeton torrenticola Terry (Chironomidae : Telmatogetoninae) from Kinihapai Stream, Maui, Hawaii. Greatest larval densities of this midge are found on substrates of high velocity, shallow flows of cascades, and splash zones of waterfalls, with lower densities in riffles. In the summer of 1994 we compared the effects of two microhabitats (termed optimal and suboptimal) on inter-instar density and relative abundance. In a second year (1995), we evaluated the effect of long-term reduced stream flow on these variables only in optimal microhabitats. A significant reduction in stream flow from …

Miniaturized Fluorescence Biosensor For Studying Neuronal Events, Thuvan Nguyen
Miniaturized Fluorescence Biosensor For Studying Neuronal Events, Thuvan Nguyen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
When developing new techniques to analyze neuro-chemical microenvironments, it is important to realize the incredible variability in the cellular content and the response to stimulation between cells and within a single cell. Conventional analysis techniques yield an average result to describe the content and function of cells. This approach often misses important information since the onset of pathological conditions is always initiated in a small number of cells. New minimally invasive single cell analysis techniques are required for single cell studies in order to gain new insights and understanding of cells' functions. The objective of my Ph.D. study was to …

Conundrums With Penumbras: The Right To Privacy Encompasses Non-Gamete Providers Who Create Preembryos With The Intent To Become Parents, Lainie M.C. Dillon
Washington Law Review
To date, five state high courts have resolved disputes over frozen preembryos. These disputes arose during divorce proceedings between couples who had previously used assisted reproduction and cryopreserved excess preembryos. In each case, one spouse wished to have the preembryos destroyed, while the other wanted to be able to use or donate them in the future. The parties in these cases invoked the constitutional right to privacy to argue for dispositional control over the preembryos; two of the five cases were resolved by relying on this right. The constitutional right to privacy protects intimate decisions involving procreation, marriage, and family …

Gene Expression Profiling In Prepubertal And Adult Male Mice Using Cdna And Oligonucleotide Microarrays, Lisa Marie Tomascik-Cheeseman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Variations in gene expression are the basis of differences in cell and tissue function, response to DNA damaging agents, susceptibility to genetic disease, and cellular differentiation. The purpose of this dissertation research was to characterize variation in basal gene expression among adult mouse tissues for selected stress response, DNA repair and damage control genes and to utilize variation in temporal gene expression patterns to identify candidate genes associated with germ cell differentiation from mitosis through meiosis in the prepubertal mouse testis. To accomplish these goals, high throughput analyses of gene expression were performed using custom cDNA and random oligonucleotide microarrays. …
