Contribution To The Speleology Of Sterkfontein Cave, Gauteng Province, South Africa, J. E. J. Martini, P. E. Wipplinger, H. F. G. Moen, A. Keyser

International Journal of Speleology

The authors present more data about the speleological aspect of the Sterkfontein Cave, famous for its bone breccia which yielded abundant hominid remains. They also briefly review the previous voluminous studies by numerous authors, which are mainly dealing with the paleontology, stratigraphy and sedimentology of the breccia. The present investigations were oriented to hitherto poorly investigated aspects such as detail mapping of the cave, its country rock stratigraphy and recording the underground extension of the basal part of the breccia body. The cave consists of a complex network of phreatic channels, developed along joints in Neoarchaean cherty dolostone over a …

The Dose Response Effect Of Almonds On Serum Vitamin E, Plasma Lipid Fractions And Erythrocyte Phospholipids, Pera Jambazian

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if two different amounts of almonds added to a heart healthy diet would increase vitamin E concentrations in healthy men and women, and reflect positive fatty acid profiles in serum lipids and erythrocytes. Twenty three subjects participated in a crossover metabolic study for a 14 week period. Subjects consumed one of three diets for 4 weeks each, a control diet, a low almond diet and a high almond diet after a 2 week run-in period. All meals were prepared in the test kitchen, and almonds were added to the experimental diets by …

Field Evaluation Of Piper Guineense And Spilanthes Mauritiana Powder As Mosquito Larvicides In Kilifi District, Kenya, Spala Oduor Ohaga

All Master’s Theses

Field tests were conducted in Kilifi District on field populations of anopheline and culicine mosquitoes using Piper guineense and Spilanthes mauritiana powder. A total of 36 aquatic habitats containing mosquito larvae were sampled and the larval populations determined by standard dipping technique before and after the application of the plant powder. Four doses (8.571, 5.714, 2.875 and 1.429 g/l) were used in the fild trials and larval mortality monitored after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Emerging adult mosquitoes were trapped by modified "Saliternick" mosquito cages and wing length measured by occular microscope. Phenotypic changes were noted. The effects of the …

Network Neutrality, Broadband Discrimination, Tim Wu Jan 2003

Network Neutrality, Broadband Discrimination, Tim Wu

Faculty Scholarship

Communications regulators over the next decade will spend increasing time on conflicts between the private interests of broadband providers and the public's interest in a competitive innovation environment centered on the Internet. As the policy questions this conflict raises are basic to communications policy, they are likely to reappear in many different forms. So far, the first major appearance has come in the "open access" (or "multiple access") debate, over the desirability of allowing vertical integration between Internet Service Providers and cable operators. Proponents of open access see it as a structural remedy to guard against an erosion of the …

Body Image, Eating Disturbance And Estrogen Levels Across The Menstrual Cycle, Mei-Chuan Wang Jan 2003

Body Image, Eating Disturbance And Estrogen Levels Across The Menstrual Cycle, Mei-Chuan Wang

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The principal interest of the current study was to examine estrogen levels across the menstrual cycle related to body image and eating disturbance. Participants were undergraduate female students at a medium size Midwestern university. There were two phases of this study-a between-subjects aspect (N = 119) followed by a within-subjects aspect (N = 41 ). Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCO VA) were used to analyze the first phase data. Results showed that when eating disorders were viewed as a whole. eating patterns were stable across the menstrual cycle; but if looked at separately. symptoms of anorexia were worse when estrogen …

An Empirical Test Of Justice Scalia's Commitment To The Rule Of Law, Gary S. Lawson Jan 2003

An Empirical Test Of Justice Scalia's Commitment To The Rule Of Law, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

On January 13, 2001, barely one month after the Supreme Court's decision in Bush v. Gore, a group of 554 legal academics calling themselves "Law Professors for the Rule of Law" took out a full-page ad in the New York Times that essentially accused the Court's majority of being faithless to the rule of law. In full, the advertisement read: BY STOPPING THE VOTE COUNT IN FLORIDA, THE U.S. SUPREME COURT USED ITS POWER To ACT AS POLITICAL PARTISANS, NOT JUDGES OF A COURT OF LAW We are Professors of Law at 120 American law schools, from every part of …

Blinded By Bioterrorism: Public Health And Liberty In The 21st Century, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

In Blindness, Nobel Prize laureate Jos6 Saramago chronicles the quarantining of the first victims of a plague of blindness.1 We meet many people who become blind in Saramago's novel, including an opthamologist, a one-eyed man with an eye patch, and a man born blind. Saramago reminds us that we are all blind in one way or another, and that there are many things about ourselves and our society that we can't or won't see. The quarantine itself turns out to be isolating, inhumane, and degrading; the interred blind being portrayed by themselves and others as pigs, dogs, and "lame crabs." …

An Evaluation Of Vegetation And Wildlife Communities In Mitigation And Natural Wetlands Of West Virginia., Collins K. Balcombe Jan 2003

An Evaluation Of Vegetation And Wildlife Communities In Mitigation And Natural Wetlands Of West Virginia., Collins K. Balcombe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this study was to evaluate the relative success of mitigation wetlands in West Virginia in supporting vegetation, invertebrate, and wildlife communities. Eleven mitigation wetlands were compared to 4 naturally occurring reference wetlands. For all vegetation species sampled, species richness (no. species/quadrat; P = 0.035), evenness (P = 0.033), and diversity (P = 0.025) were higher in mitigation than reference wetlands. Mean weighted averages per quadrat were similar between mitigation and reference wetlands (P = 0.242). Differences in vegetation composition between wetland types were reflected through ordination using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). Both mitigation and natural wetlands met …

Modeling Direct Farm Marketing In West Virginia: A Spatial, Policy, And Profitability Analysis., Jesse Ernest Gandee Jan 2003

Modeling Direct Farm Marketing In West Virginia: A Spatial, Policy, And Profitability Analysis., Jesse Ernest Gandee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This analysis uses economic modeling techniques to analyze direct farm marketing sales, profits, and public policy in West Virginia. To investigate factors that affect county direct farm marketing, the impact of consumer demographic, land, and spatial variables upon county direct farm marketing sales is tested. The results reveal that income, education, land characteristics, and adjacent metropolitan areas influence direct farm marketing sales. An Input-Output (I-O) model is used to analyze a direct farm marketing public policy in the Mountain State. The results from the model portray a disproportionate amount of West Virginia food production contributing to marketing services and a …

Ergot Alkaloids And Herbivory In Model Animals, And, Variation In An Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis Gene., Andrea B. Sedlock

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Neotyphodium spp. are members of the fungal family Clavicipitaceae that grow endophytically within several important forage grasses, imparting benefits to the host grass. Several species produce toxic ergopeptines that are thought to adversely affect mammalian health. Inclusion of 1% agar in endophyte-infected seed diets was found to ameliorate some of the consequences of feeding endophyte-infected seeds to mice. Based upon feeding preferences of rabbits and mice, it seems that ergot alkaloids are not critical factors for deterring feeding on endophyte-infected plants by these animals, but the presence of the fungus appeared to deter rabbits. Intron-containing fragments of lysergyl peptide synthetase …

Supreme Court Review Of State-Court Determinations Of State Law In Constitutional Cases, Henry Paul Monaghan Jan 2003

Supreme Court Review Of State-Court Determinations Of State Law In Constitutional Cases, Henry Paul Monaghan

Faculty Scholarship

The decision in Bush v. Gore and particularly Chief Justice Rehnquist's concurring opinion were widely criticized for their unwarranted intrusion upon the "authoritative" status of the Florida Supreme Court in determining the meaning of Florida election law. This Article rejects the merits of that criticism. It proposes the thesis that the Supreme Court has ancillary jurisdiction to review state-court determinations of state law in cases where the Constitution or ftderal law imposes a duty of fidelity to prior state law (t1) and the claim is that the state court materially and impermissibly departed from that law at a …

The Evolution Of Human Life Expectancy And Intelligence In Hunter-Gatherer Economies, Hillard Kaplan Jan 2003

The Evolution Of Human Life Expectancy And Intelligence In Hunter-Gatherer Economies, Hillard Kaplan

ESI Publications

The economics of hunting and gathering must have driven the biological evolution of human characteristics, since hunter-gatherer societies prevailed for the two million years of human history. These societies feature huge intergenerational resource flows, suggesting that these resource flows should replace fertility as the key demographic consideration. It is then theoretically expected that life expectancy and brain size would increase simultaneously, as apparently occurred during our evolutionary history. The brain here is considered as a direct form of bodily investment, but also crucially as facilitating further indirect investment by means of learning-by-doing.

Theorizing Community Justice Through Community Courts, Jeffery Fagan, Victoria Malkin Jan 2003

Theorizing Community Justice Through Community Courts, Jeffery Fagan, Victoria Malkin

Faculty Scholarship

Community justice practitioners argue that the justice system has long ignored its biggest clients-citizens and neighborhoods that suffer the everyday consequences of high crime levels. One response from legal elites has been a package of court innovations and new practices known as "community justice," part of a broader appeal to "community" and "partnership" common now in modern discourse on crime control. This concept incorporates several contemporary visions and expressions of justice within the popular and legal literatures: problem-solving courts (such as drug courts, mental health courts, domestic violence courts, gun courts, and, of course, juvenile courts); the inclusion of victims …

Recent Cases: Appellate Procedure - Force Of Circuit Precedent - Ninth Circuit Holds That Three-Judge Panels May Declare Prior Cases Overruled When Intervening Supreme Court Precedent Undercuts The Theory Of Earlier Decisions, Robert J. Jackson Jr. Jan 2003

Recent Cases: Appellate Procedure - Force Of Circuit Precedent - Ninth Circuit Holds That Three-Judge Panels May Declare Prior Cases Overruled When Intervening Supreme Court Precedent Undercuts The Theory Of Earlier Decisions, Robert J. Jackson Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

The nation's courts of appeals have struggled to devise a coherent approach to harmonizing existing circuit case law with intervening decisions of the Supreme Court.' When the Court directly overrules a decision of a court of appeals, it is agreed that the overruled decision loses the force of law. But when a Supreme Court opinion disfavors a circuit's jurisprudential theory, the courts of appeals must determine to what extent cases relying on the rejected theory remain good law. Recently, in Miller v. Gammie (Gammie II),2 the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, sitting en banc, adopted an …

Gay Science As Law: An Outline For A Nietzschean Jurisprudence, Jonathan Yovel Jan 2003

Gay Science As Law: An Outline For A Nietzschean Jurisprudence, Jonathan Yovel

Cardozo Law Review

The main question examined in this study is not merely how a Nietzschean critique of law would look had Nietzsche ever applied his genealogical method to the question of law, but also what positive function Nietzschean philosophy may ascribe to law - and how law must then be transformed. The methodological parable imagines a "post-genealogy" or "post-ressentiment" phase of the human condition, akin to the Marxist "post-revolutionary" phase: How would law look for the person of power - overman or otherwise - who needs to live among others? How is normativity possible - what are its forms and …

Thinking About Eden: A Tribute To Herbert Morris, George P. Fletcher Jan 2003

Thinking About Eden: A Tribute To Herbert Morris, George P. Fletcher

Faculty Scholarship

This essay is an exercise in interpreting a revered, but neglected, text. I take as my object of study the story of Adam and Eve in Eden. My interest in these passages derives in large part from conversations with my mentor, Herb Morris, who taught me to appreciate the beauties and mysteries of this rich tale. For both us, the problem is explicating the deeper meaning of the story. Perhaps I put more emphasis on the original text than Morris does, but we share a common objective of understanding what the story can teach us about the human condition.

Thus, …
