Haemoglobin And Transferrin Types In Çine Type Sheep, Funda Kargin, Ayşegül Bi̇ldi̇k, Kami̇l Seyrek
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Haemoglobin and transferrin types were investigated in Çine type sheep. Separation of transferrin (Tf) and haemoglobin (Hb) types was carried out using horizontal starch-gel and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, respectively. Three Hb A and 59 Hb B types, and 5 transferrin alleles (A, B, M, D, E) were isolated from Çine type sheep. Eight Tf phenotypes consisting of 3 homozygote types (Tf AA, Tf MM, Tf DD) and 5 hetorozygote types (Tf AM, Tf AD, Tf AE, Tf BD, Tf MD) were detected.
Which Ties Bind? Redefining The Parent-Child Relationship In An Age Of Genetic Certainty, Naomi R. Cahn, June Carbone
Which Ties Bind? Redefining The Parent-Child Relationship In An Age Of Genetic Certainty, Naomi R. Cahn, June Carbone
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This article addresses the role of the genetic tie in the parent-child relationship through three lenses. First, we argue that the legal system recognizes children's rights not by treating children as autonomous actors, but by identifying the individuals and institutions most likely to promote children's interests and encouraging their success. Second, we examine the existing empirical and socio-biological literature that considers the importance of biological relationships, and concludes that it demonstrates not a single set of answers, but a set of tradeoffs. The well-being of young children, particularly in societies less prosperous than our own, may depend on the mother's …

Thinking Race, Making Nation (Reviewing Glenn C. Loury, The Anatomy Of Racial Inequality), Christopher A. Bracey
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
We live in a race-conscious culture. As Americans, we are a nation of people who self-consciously chose to adopt a vision of society that embraced lofty ideals of individual freedom and democracy for all along with powerful mechanisms for devastating racial oppression. Our history is replete with instances of differential treatment on account of race - slavery being only the most egregious example - that achieved the desired effect of generating remarkable disparities in socioeconomic well-being among individuals and between different racial groups. Such disparities are not simply historical artifacts. They are facts of the contemporary American racial landscape as …
Corporate Governance In China: An Overview, Donald C. Clarke
Corporate Governance In China: An Overview, Donald C. Clarke
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Corporate governance (gongsi zhili) is a concept whose time seems definitely to have come in China. Chinese definitions of corporate governance in the abstract tend to cover the system regulating relationships among all parties with interests in a business organization, usually spelling out shareholders as a particularly important group (e.g., Liu, 1999; Yin, 1999). But Chinese corporate governance discourse in practice focuses almost exclusively on agency problems and within only two types of firms: state-owned enterprises (SOEs), particularly after their transformation into one of the corporate forms provided for under the Company Law,1 and listed companies, which must be companies …
More Statistics, Less Persuasion: A Cultural Theory Of Gun-Risk Perceptions, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan
More Statistics, Less Persuasion: A Cultural Theory Of Gun-Risk Perceptions, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
What motivates individuals to support or oppose the legal regulation of guns? What sorts of evidence or arguments are likely to promote a resolution of the gun control debate? Using the survey methods associated with the cultural theory of risk, we demonstrate that individuals' positions on gun control derive from their cultural world views: individuals of an egalitarian or solidaristic orientation tend to support gun control, those of a hierarchical or individualist orientation to oppose it. Indeed, cultural orientations so defined are stronger predictors of individuals' positions than is any other fact about them, including whether they are male or …
A Spatial Model For Evaluating Variable-Rate Fertilizer Application Accuracy, John Patrick Fulton
A Spatial Model For Evaluating Variable-Rate Fertilizer Application Accuracy, John Patrick Fulton
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The popularity of variable-rate technology (VRT) has grown. However, the limitations and errors ofthis technology are generally unknown. Therefore, a spatial data model was developed to generate "asapplied"surfaces to advance precision agricultural (PA) practices. A test methodology based on ASAEStandard S341.2 was developed to perform uniform-rate (UR) and variable-rate (VR) tests to characterizedistribution patterns testing four VRT granular applicators (two spinner spreaders and two pneumaticapplicators). Single-pass UR patterns exhibited consistent shapes for three of the applicators with patternsshifts observed for the fourth applicator. Simulated overlap analysis showed that three of the applicatorsperformed satisfactorily with most CVs less than 20% while …
Chronic Ethanol Consumption Inhibits Multiple Apoptotic Pathways In The Rat Pancreatic Acinar Cell, Franco Fortunato
Chronic Ethanol Consumption Inhibits Multiple Apoptotic Pathways In The Rat Pancreatic Acinar Cell, Franco Fortunato
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Multiple lines of experimental evidence demonstrate that chronic alcoholconsumption causes mitochondrial injury, as well as acinar cell oxidative and metabolicstress. Alcoholics are more susceptible to acute and chronic pancreatitis. Despite alcoholrelatedacinar cell injury, apoptosis, or programmed cell death, appears to be reduced inacinar cells rather than increased, as is seen in the liver. This work describes the possible mechanisms through which alcohol affects theacinar cell apoptosis pathways in the rat pancreas. Two apoptotic pathways wereinvestigated: (1) receptor-mediated apoptosis via Fas/FasL and caspase-8, and (2)mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis via Bcl-2/Bax and caspase-9. Both pathways canactivate the final apoptosis executer caspase-3. Using the Lieber-DeCarli alcohol/controldiet, …

Ecological Implications Of Bovine Tuberculosis In African Buffalo Herds, A. Caron, P. C. Cross, Johan T. Du Toit
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Following the recent invasion of bovine tuberculosis (BTB) into the Kruger National Park, South Africa, we conducted a study on the maintenance host, African buffalo, to investigate associations between BTB prevalence and calf:cow ratio, age structure, body condition, and endoparasite load. Statistical analyses compared herds of zero, medium (1–40%), and high (>40%) BTB prevalence. To control for ecological variation across the park we collected data in northern, central, and southern regions and restricted some analyses to particular regions of the park. Body condition declined over the course of the 2001 dry season, and buffaloes in the southern region of …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This interdisciplinary project explores the potential for handheld/wireless (H/W) technology in the context of language education within and beyond the classroom. Specifically, we have designed and implemented a suite of multi-platform (desktop/laptop, handheld, and browser) applications to enhance the teaching of South Asian languages such as Hindi-Urdu. Such languages are very difficult to learn, let alone write, and H/W devices (with their handwriting/drawing capabilities) can play a significant role in overcoming the learning curve. The initial application suite includes a character/word tracer, a word splitter/joiner, a smart flashcard with audio, contextual augmented stories for reading comprehension, and a poetic metronome. …

The Internet and digital technology create new possibilities for the development of cultures, communities and knowledge. Over the last twenty years there has been a great increase in interest inindigenous knowledge from a variety of groups, including academia, development agencies and thecorporate world. Within this diverse range of interests, there have been initiatives to facilitate a globalnetwork to exchange indigenous knowledge by development agencies such as the World Bank's'Indigneous Knowledge for Development Program' and UNESCO's 'Best Practices of IndigenousKnowledge' database. The development agencies appear to be mainly concerned with systematizingindigenous knowledge and looking at the notion of indigenous knowledge as forming …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Episodic crossovers of cold low salinity Scotian Shelf Water (SSW) onto the Northeast Peak of Georges Bank are a potentially important mechanism transporting plankton species, including the copepod Calanus finmarchicus and its prey and predators, onto the Bank each spring. We provide the first detailed investigation of horizontal and vertical zooplankton distributions in SSW crossovers compared to other onbank locations from three GLOBEC cruises during spring 1997. SSW crossovers are physically and biologically distinct from other Bank locations. In late spring, chlorophyll concentrations and in vivo fluorescence are elevated and light transmission is reduced in SSW, while during early spring, …

Speciation Analysis Of Arsenic And Selenium By Hplc And Mass Spectrometry, Sarah Fitzpatrick
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
New methodologies have been developed for the determination of arsenic and selenium species in a variety of environmentally important matrices. A simple liquid chromatographic separation technique based upon mini-column technology was developed to obtain a simultaneous, fast, efficient and reliable separation of relatively toxic from relatively non-toxic arsenic and selenium species. The relatively toxic arsenic and selenium species studied were inorganic Asv, AsIII, SeVI and SeIV. The relatively non-toxic species of arsenic and selenium studied were AsBet, DMA and Se Met. Optimum conditions were found to be the use of a Hamilton PRP X100 12-20 µm anion-exchange resin with column …
Investigation Of Primary Productivity Along The Atlantic Meridional Transect (50°N To 33°S) Through Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometry, Claudia Yuki Omachi
Investigation Of Primary Productivity Along The Atlantic Meridional Transect (50°N To 33°S) Through Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometry, Claudia Yuki Omachi
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Phytoplankton physiology and primary productivity at basin scales were determined using in situ data from fast repetition rate (FRR) fluorometry. Samples were collected along the Atlantic Meridional Transect cruise 11 (AMTll, September-October 2000), between 50°N and 33°S in the Atlantic Ocean. Because of the large-scale nature of the study, consistent knowledge about oceanographic conditions and the phytoplankton community structure of each sampling station were required. The province analysis was carried out by detecting the regional variations of water mass characteristics in the upper 200 m layer. Temperature versus salinity diagrams were plotted at each station and further analyses of nitrate …

Characterisation Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity In The Sea Anemone Aiptasia Pallida And An Evaluation Of Responses To Environmental Stress, Clare Emma Morrall
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Studies were undertaken to investigate the presence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS; E.C. 1.14.13.39) activity in number of cnidarian species from shallow marine subtropical environments. Enzyme activity was assayed by measuring the conversion of 3H L-arginine to 3H L-citrulline (the citrulline assay). This assay was shown to be sufficiently sensitive for studies of this nature but was not optimised for use with cnidarian preparations. As a result, confidence in the accuracy of the generated assay results is limited. NOS activity was nevertheless demonstrated in the sea anemone A. pallida, in the zooxanthellae associated with A. pallida, Symbiodinium spp. and in …

Philosophies Of Colour: Gender And Acculturation, Helen V Andrew
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
My hypothesis is that 'Colour' as idea acts as a dynamic in the production of meaning and as such is part of what Le Doeuff (1991: 46-49) argues are deeply held epistemes that structure and govern our ways of thinking. I have dealt with the difficulties attendant on the analysis of a phenomenon as insubstantial as colour (as idea and as precept) by assuming Goethe's (1810: 305-323) concept of the enrobement of colour to objects without also attaching Goethe's theoretical hypothesis of moral associations to colour. Thus I combine four different methodologies to broadly related areas and cloak each in …

The trajectorv of this thesis is set out like a journey upon which encounters are staged between two films. film theor), and philosophers. such as Slavoj Zizek. Gilles Deletize, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. An encounter with a moment of image suspension. a cut to the blank screen- in Tacita Dean's film, Disappearance atSea (1996). motivates the beginning of this journey's narrative. My reading of this moment counters the way that suspended film moments have been discussed in terms of non-narrative in 1970s film theory and in the contemporary psychoanalýlic filin theory of Slavoj Zizek. Using Gilles Deleuze's notion of narrativization as …

The Kinesfield : A Study Of Movement-Based Interactive And Choreographic Art, Gretchen Elizabeth Schiller
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Through the exploration of practice and theory, this thesis aims to elucidate the characteristics of movement-based interactive art and the kinesfield, a term developed during the course of the research to describe the publics' body-medium. Movement-based interactive art is based on choreographed movements of the body, media and specialized technologies which facilitate new forms of participatory movement experience. This emergent art form has initiated new methods of experiencing and presenting dance in the public domain. lt is argued that this leads to new artistic developments which may constitute a paradigm shift of the concept of the body-medium in the field …

Creating Emotionally Aware Performance Environments: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Inferred And Invisible Data Space, Richard Mark Povall
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The practical research undertaken for this thesis - the building of interactive and non-interactive environments for performance - posits a radical recasting of the performing body in physical and digital space. The choreographic and thematic context of the performance work has forced us', as makers, to ask questions about the nature of digital interactivity which in turn feeds the work theoretically, technically and thematically. A computer views (and attempts to interpret) motion information through a video camera, and, by way of a scripting language, converts that information into MIDI' data. As the research has developed, our company has been able …

The thesis sets Rousseau's philosophy of music and aesthetic of opera against the wider philosophical backcloth of eighteenth-centuryF rance and in contraposition to the more scopic music-theoredcabl ackdrop,o f which Rameau'sw ritings are takena s a paradigm. The first half of the thesis contends that the philosophy of music is fashioned upon a trinary model which mirrors the philosophy of nature and history. The first sector is an ideal, hypothetical state; the second (the 'fall) is the moment when the ideal state is ruptured, when societal and cultural institutions - and history - commence; the third, is the 'actual state', …
