Using A Modified Purse Seine To Collect And Monitor Estuarine Fishes, Michael R. Wessel, Brent L. Winner Jan 2003

Using A Modified Purse Seine To Collect And Monitor Estuarine Fishes, Michael R. Wessel, Brent L. Winner

Gulf and Caribbean Research

We developed a modified purse seine to sample shallow water estuarine habitats and evaluated the efficacy of using this gear as a tool for monitoring estuarine fish populations in Tampa Bay, Florida. The purse seine (183-m long, 5.2 m deep and 50-mm stretch mesh nylon throughout) was easily deployed and retrieved by a 7 m flat-bottomed, bow-driven boat with a hydraulic wench and aluminum pursing davit. Retention rates of pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) marked and released into 35 net sets averaged 49% (range 9-100%). Retention rates were not significantly influenced by sets over vegetated and unvegetated bottom types, various …

Patents, Product Exclusivity, And Information Dissemination: How Law Directs Biopharmaceutical Research And Development, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2003

Patents, Product Exclusivity, And Information Dissemination: How Law Directs Biopharmaceutical Research And Development, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

It's a great honor for me to be invited to deliver the Levine Distinguished Lecture at Fordham, and a great opportunity to try out some new ideas before this audience. As some of you know, I've been studying the role of patents in biomedical research and product development ("R&D") for close to twenty years now, with a particular focus on how patents work in "upstream" research in universities and biotechnology companies that are working on research problems that arise prior to "downstream" product development. But, of course, the patent strategies of these institutions are designed around the profits that everyone …

The Least Of The Sentient Beings' And The Question Of Reduction, Refinement, And Replacement, Joseph Vining Jan 2003

The Least Of The Sentient Beings' And The Question Of Reduction, Refinement, And Replacement, Joseph Vining

Other Publications

The subject I was asked to think about with you today is raised by a very large change in the focus of biomedical research. In raw percentage terms, the animals involved in experimentation are now overwhelmingly rats and mice, and, perhaps because they are rats and mice, they are used in large numbers, numbers in thousands and tens of thousands at some institutions. Legal, ethical, and practical accommodation to this fact on the ground presents a host of questions. There are questions of the cost of care. There are questions of the training of veterinarians, principal investigators, and laboratory personnel. …

Competition, Corporate Responsibility, And The China Question, Jospeh Vining Jan 2003

Competition, Corporate Responsibility, And The China Question, Jospeh Vining

Other Publications

"Corporate responsibility" is not a peripheral matter. It is at the core of all decision-making on behalf of business corporations under American law. This paper examines the effort to add an exemption for "business" in corporate form to the exemptions from ordinary responsibility that are seen in other areas of activity - e.g., for the military, for lawyers in adversarial litigation, or for investigators in scientific research. It looks at a number of well known cases and points to the often neglected relevance of both the criminal law applicable to corporations as such, and the evolving professional responsibility of corporate …

Bayh-Dole Reform And The Progress Of Biomedicine, Arti K. Rai, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2003

Bayh-Dole Reform And The Progress Of Biomedicine, Arti K. Rai, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

Advances in fundamental biomedical research play an important and growing role in the development of new therapeutic and diagnostic products. Although the development of pharmaceutical end products has long been a proprietary enterprise, biomedical research comes from a very different tradition of open science. Within this tradition, long-standing norms call for relatively unfettered access to fundamental knowledge developed by prior researchers. The tradition of open science has eroded considerably over the past quarter century as proprietary claims have reached farther upstream from end products to cover fundamental discoveries that provide the knowledge base for future product development.

Behavioral Economics And The Sec, Stephen J. Choi, Adam C. Pritchard Jan 2003

Behavioral Economics And The Sec, Stephen J. Choi, Adam C. Pritchard

Not all investors are rational. Quite apart from the obvious examples of credulity in the face of the latest Ponzi scheme, there is no shortage of evidence that many investors' decisions are influenced by systematic biases that impair their abilities to maximize their investment returns. For example, investors will often hold onto poorly performing stocks longer than warranted, hoping to recoup their losses. Other investors will engage in speculative trading, dissipating their returns by paying larger commissions than more passive investors. And we are not just talking about widows and orphans here. There is evidence that supposedly sophisticated institutional investors-mutual …

Lectin Expression Associated With Plasmodium Infections In Anopheles, Dolphine Achieng' Jan 2003

Lectin Expression Associated With Plasmodium Infections In Anopheles, Dolphine Achieng'

All Master’s Theses

The variation of the mannose-binding protein (MBP) gene and the role of lectins during infection in mosquitoes were investigated using genomic DNA approach based on sequencing of the gene and the levels of its expression determined using semi-quantitative Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) approach. Using shotgun cloning ~trategy, sequences were determined from cloned PCR products obtained from genomic DNA of An.gambiae, s.s, An. arabiensis and An. funestus and aligned following amino acid translation. BLAST program revealed that MBP-M 1, MBP-13 and MBP 15 clones showed high homology, with Anopheles protein precusor A 16 (Accession 093118). These results were further …

Bio-Evaluation Of Larvicidal Plants From The Coastal Parts Of Kenya, Fidelis Nekesa Samita Jan 2003

Bio-Evaluation Of Larvicidal Plants From The Coastal Parts Of Kenya, Fidelis Nekesa Samita

All Master’s Theses

Malaria is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, particularly among children in sub-Saharan Africa. In this area, estimates of symptomatic malaria range from one to five episodes per child per year, while deaths attributable to malaria are estimated at between 0.5 to 2.0 million, annually. Annual global clinical cases are estimated at 300-500 million with 90% of the cases in sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria remains intractable throughout most of its range, in part due to the evolution of behaviours maximizing contact of some Anopheles vectors with the human host while minimizing the risk of mosquito mortality. There is rapid development of …

Retrieval, Action And The Representation Of Distance In Cognitive Maps, Davi Vann Bugmann Jan 2003

Retrieval, Action And The Representation Of Distance In Cognitive Maps, Davi Vann Bugmann

School of Psychology Theses

This thesis examines the context effects on retrieval, and the influence of action on the representation of distance in cognitive maps. It is proposed that bias in distance estimation is a function of the contexts of retrieval that trigger the representation of action in memory during evaluation tasks. The proposal is consistent with embodied cognition evidence that suggests that actions are implicitly a part of the representation, and will be naturally extracted as part of the retrieval process. The experimental work presented examines two different contextual cues; the frequency of visitation to landmarks, and the importance of activity performed at …

Hyalgan® Has A Dose-Dependent Differential Effect On Macrophage Proliferation And Cell Death, Kyle M. Sheehan, Lindsey B. Delott, Susan M. Day, David H. Deheer

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The intra-articular injection of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) has been reported to be an effective treatment for pain of osteoarthritis of the knee. However, the mechanism by which HA exerts its effect is unknown. To explore HA's influence on the growth of U937 human macrophages, cells were incubated for 168 h with three concentrations, 1, 0.1 and 0.01 mg/mL, of Hyalgan®, a high molecular weight HA preparation. At 24-h increments, the cells were examined for proliferation, cell cycle distribution as well as the number of apoptotic and dead cells. Exposing macrophages to 1 mg/mL Hyalgan® significantly reduced the …

Determination Of The Allele Frequency Of Some Genomic Loci In A Holstein Cattle Population And Its Importance In Individual Identification, Harun Ceri̇t

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Nowadays, the use of DNA sequences with genetic techniques and DNA polymorphism as genetic markers is increasing very rapidly. In this study, we examined the frequencies of seven different polymorphic loci in the cattle population of İstanbul University Veterinary Medicine Research and Application Farm. Thus, our aim was to examine and calculate the power of exclusion, match probability and power of discrimination of the seven loci, and examine the usefulness of the involved loci in identification tests. For DNA extraction, Chelex and Phenol-Chloroform-Isoamil alcohol methods were applied to the blood taken from animals. After measuring the amount and purity degree …
