Un Seminario Sobre Mayordomía Para La Unión Mexicana Del Norte De Los Adventistas Del Séptimo Día, Jorge Rodolfo Dzul Jan 2003

Un Seminario Sobre Mayordomía Para La Unión Mexicana Del Norte De Los Adventistas Del Séptimo Día, Jorge Rodolfo Dzul

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The doctrine of Christian stewardship is important for the believer and the the church. This biblical teaching covers all of the Christian experience, yet its main challenge is in its relation with money. The purpose of this dissertation was to provide a better understanding of this doctrine among Seventh-day Adventists and to encourage them to be “good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (1 Peter 4:10).

The methodology of this dissertation was to examine existing Protestant literature, as well as Seventh-day Adventist writings, on the topic. The theoretical section of the study covers the nature of stewardship, its biblical …

Uric Acid As An Antioxidant And The Effect Of Changes In Plasma Uric Acid Concentrations On Broiler Susceptibility To Ascites, And, The Effect Of Diet And Strain On Growth, Feed Efficiency, And Amino Acid Retention In Hybrid Bluegill., Beth M. Stinefelt Jan 2003

Stinefelt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Study one investigated the ability of uric acid (UA) to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the ability of UA to protect against ROS-mediated damage. Hydroxyl and superoxide radical ESR signals were reduced by addition of UA (P< 0.05). UA prevented lipid peroxidation in RAW 264.7 cells exposed to silica (P< 0.015). UA inhibited hydroxyl-mediated damage to λ Hind III DNA. The objective of study two was to determine the effect of changes in plasma UA (PUA) on growth and ascites development in broilers. Chicks were fed a grower diet supplemented with 0.5 moles inosine/kg feed to raise PUA, 15 mg allopurinol/kg body weight/day to lower PUA, or a control diet. Birds were housed in two environmental chambers; one had conditions to promote ascites while the second was held at standard conditions. Although dietary treatment had an effect on PUA, no effect of diet on performance or development of ascites was observed.

Understanding Statutory Bundles: Does The Sherman Act Come With The 1996 Telecommunications Act?, Randal C. Picker Jan 2003

Understanding Statutory Bundles: Does The Sherman Act Come With The 1996 Telecommunications Act?, Randal C. Picker

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Three recent appellate decisions—Goldwasser, Trinko and Covad—have addressed the interplay of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and the antitrust laws. This area raises questions of both substantive law and standing. This essay focuses on standing and in particular the question of how the antitrust doctrine in Illinois Brick should apply to situations in which there is an alleged breach of an access duty owed by an incumbent local exchange carrier. That access duty might arise under the 1996 Act itself or under applicable antitrust doctrines, such as the essential facilities doctrine or the duty to deal with competitors seen in Aspen …

An Examination Of The Habitat Requirements Of The Endangered Virginia Northern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys Sabrinus Fuscus) By Assessing Nesting Sites, Habitat Use And The Development Of A Habitat Model., Jennifer M. Menzel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Little is known about nest tree use of the endangered Virginia northern flying squirrel. I compared characteristics of nest trees used by Virginia northern flying squirrels with randomly selected trees during summer and fall of 2000 and 2001. I tracked 13 squirrels to 59 nest trees. Sixty-nine percent of the nests were in cavities and 31% were leaf nests. Yellow birch, black birch and American beech were selected for nest trees more than expected. Nest trees were in larger and taller trees than trees in the surrounding area. There were a significant number of trees located near skidder and hiking …

Selected Chemoautotrophic Processes In Wastewater Treatment: Low Temperature Nitrification Inhibition By An Azo Dye And Biofiltration For Odor Control Of Hydrogen Sulfide, Ronald W. Martin Jr.

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Biochemical processes by chemoautotrophs such as nitrifiers and sulfide and iron oxidizers are used extensively in wastewater treatment. The research described in this dissertation involved the study of two selected biological processes utilized in wastewater treatment mediated by chemoautotrophic bacteria: nitrification (biological removal of ammonia and nitrogen) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal from odorous air using biofiltration.

A municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) receiving industrial dyeing discharge containing the azo dye, acid black 1 (AB1) failed to meet discharge limits, especially during the winter. Dyeing discharge mixed with domestic sewage was fed to sequencing batch reactors at 22oC and 7oC. …

New Video Game: Japan's Video Game Producers Lose At The Litigation Game, Dan Rosen Jan 2003

New Video Game: Japan's Video Game Producers Lose At The Litigation Game, Dan Rosen

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Video games present a legal problem that may be more difficult for courts to solve than the games themselves. In Japan, each court took a somewhat different approach. In its opinion, the Tokyo District Court tried to differentiate between movies and video games by focusing on the role of the audience. That court emphasized the fact that while movie audiences are passive and have no effect on the course of the movie, video game audiences actively affect the progression of the storyline. To illustrate the difference that the Tokyo Court emphasized, consider the Pokemon cast. They were originally characters in …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) provide an abundant source of DNA polymorphisms in a number of eukaryotic species. Information on the frequency, nature, and distribution of SNPs in plant genomes is limited. Thus, our objectives were (1) to determine SNP frequency in coding and noncoding soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) DNA sequence amplified from genomic DNA using PCR primers designed to complete genes, cDNAs, and random genomic sequence; (2) to characterize haplotype variation in these sequences; and (3) to provide initial estimates of linkage disequilibrium (LD) in soybean. Approximately 28.7 kbp of coding sequence, 37.9 kbp of noncoding perigenic DNA, and …

Normative Study Of The Mahan And Ditomasso Anger Scale, Roger Oliver Beardmore Jan 2003

Normative Study Of The Mahan And Ditomasso Anger Scale, Roger Oliver Beardmore

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The present study proposed to advance the treatment of anger disorders by exploring the psychometric properties of the MAD-AS scale, an anger assessment tool. Research sought to build on prior investigation of the reliability, validity, and factor structure of the MAD-AS in an inpatient setting by examining this measure using outpatient subjects. Several important findings were obtained in this study. Research results suggest that the MAD-AS represents a significant improvement over some existing anger measures in terms of its brevity, its ease of administration, and its standardization of scoring. The MAD-AS appears to possess sound psychometric properties in terms of …

A Study On Various Factors And Their Relationship To Burnout Among Seventh-Day Adventist Clergy, W. Don Edwards Jan 2003

A Study On Various Factors And Their Relationship To Burnout Among Seventh-Day Adventist Clergy, W. Don Edwards

Dissertations

Problem. Few studies have addressed burnout among Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) clergy. Many SDA ministers report experiencing high stress in their ministries and they find it difficult to function optimally under these circumstances. Others experience serious complications that lead them to terminate their work as ministers.

Method. A quantitative research design was used for an ex post facto study of 130 pastors from the Pacific Union Conference. They completed two questionnaires: the Pastoral Services Demographic Data Sheet (PSDDS) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).

Results. This study examined 12 variables and found that 10 variables had a significant …

Experimental Investigation Of Separation In A Low Pressure Turbine Blade Cascade Model, Brian Hollon Jan 2003

Experimental Investigation Of Separation In A Low Pressure Turbine Blade Cascade Model, Brian Hollon

The flow field around a low pressure turbine blade is examined using smoke-wire flow visualization, static surface pressure measurements, and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The purpose of the experimental study is to investigate the transition and separation characteristics on low pressure turbine blades under low Reynolds number (Re) and varying freestream turbulence intensity (FSTI). A cascade model consisting of 6 Pratt andamp; Whitney PAK-B low pressure turbine blades was examined in a wind tunnel using PIV and flow visualization. Smoke-wire visualization was performed for test section exit angles of 93°, 95°, and 97°, in the range Re = …

The Interplay Between Norms And Enforcement In Tax Compliance, Leandra Lederman Jan 2003

The Interplay Between Norms And Enforcement In Tax Compliance, Leandra Lederman

Articles by Maurer Faculty

What will increase individuals' compliance with the federal income tax? There are rich legal, economic, and sociological literatures examining this question. The traditional answer that increased enforcement will increase compliance is supported by both economic modeling and a number of experiments. However, studies show that appeals to normative beliefs about honesty in taxpaying play an important role as well.

A number of scholars have suggested that vigorous enforcement of the tax laws may be counterproductive because it may suggest that noncompliance is the norm. This article argues, in part, that enforcement and a compliance norm are not inconsistent but rather …

Thermal Time: Body Size, Food Quality And The 10c Rule, Eric Charnov, James Gillooly Jan 2003

Thermal Time: Body Size, Food Quality And The 10c Rule, Eric Charnov, James Gillooly

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Developmental rates of ectotherms (y) are often linearly related to temperature (Tc in C) within some biologically relevant range of temperatures as y = (1/S)(Tc - Tb), where Tb is the estimated temperature at zero development, and the thermal constant S is the development time multiplied by the temperature above Tb (i.e. degree days above Tb). Among similar species, it has been widely shown that S and Tb are negatively related across environments, that S is positively related to body size, and that Tb is independent of body size but increases with mean environmental temperature. Here we present a model …
