Contraflow Evacuation On The Westbound I-10 Out Of The City Of New Orleans, Gregoris Theodoulou Jan 2003

Contraflow Evacuation On The Westbound I-10 Out Of The City Of New Orleans, Gregoris Theodoulou

LSU Master's Theses

In this study, CORSIM 5.0 simulation model results were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the contraflow segment on westbound I-10 out of the City of New Orleans. The Louisiana State Police plan for the contraflow segment was used to construct the CORSIM network. Alternative plans were also developed in this study to compare the effectiveness of the contraflow operation. With the use of CORSIM, traffic flow on the contraflow segment was determined based on the amount of evacuating vehicles leaving the exit nodes. In addition the time and speed to travel the contraflow segment was estimated. The results showed …

Use Of Primary Production By Benthic Invertebrates In A Louisiana Salt-Marsh Food Web, Padma Maddi Jan 2003

Use Of Primary Production By Benthic Invertebrates In A Louisiana Salt-Marsh Food Web, Padma Maddi

LSU Master's Theses

A combination of natural abundances of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and tracer-addition experiments were employed to determine the relative contributions of three potential food sources (phytoplankton, benthic microalgae, and Spartina alterniflora) to benthic invertebrate fauna of Louisiana salt marshes. Samples of the major food sources and the consumers were collected quarterly (summer, fall, winter and spring) to analyze the ƒÔ13C and ƒÔ15N ratios. A simultaneous tracer-addition experiment, in which benthic microalgae (BMA) were labeled with NaH13CO3 and 15NH4Cl, was conducted in all quarters to determine the relative importance of the BMA to consumers. Results indicated that the carbon isotopic …

Effects Of Fire Intensity On Groundcover Shrubs In A Frequently Burned Longleaf Pine Savanna, Jarrod Matthew Thaxton Jan 2003

Effects Of Fire Intensity On Groundcover Shrubs In A Frequently Burned Longleaf Pine Savanna, Jarrod Matthew Thaxton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Variation in fire intensity may affect the structure and composition of frequently burned plant communities. I hypothesize that small-scale variation in fuel loads affects fire intensity within single fires in frequently burned savannas. Furthermore, I expect that local differences in fire intensity produce predictable patterns to the demography of groundcover shrubs. I tested these hypotheses by manipulating fuel loads in a longleaf pine savanna. Fuel load treatments consisted of fine fuel removal, pine needle addition, wood addition and unaltered control, mimicking naturally occurring fuel load variation. Treatments were repeated in 1m2 subplots over two sets of biennial burns and shrub …

Clay Landfill Liners Subject To Variable Interfacial Redox And Ph Conditions-Heavy Metal And Clay Interactions, Ping Zhou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Municipal landfill leachate contains high levels of metal species, including Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb generating competitive interactions between these metal species and the landfill clay liner materials. Characterization of the clay fraction, physical and chemical characteristics of landfill clay liner materials, the competitive interaction of metal species with clay liner materials, the kinetic modeling of metal species transport in clay liner, and the effect of cyclic interfacial redox potential on the structural changes to the clay liner and leachate metal transport were investigated in this study. The clay liner materials studied included Na-bentonite, kaolinite and Amite soil (sandy silty …

The Louisiana Calf-To-Carcass Program: Growth And Carcass Traits, James E. Devillier Jan 2003

The Louisiana Calf-To-Carcass Program: Growth And Carcass Traits, James E. Devillier

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Feedlot and carcass data from 1,533 weanling steers consigned to the Louisiana Calf-to-Carcass program from 1992 to 1998 were used to evaluate the influence of feeder calf grade, sire breed, and initial feedlot weight on growth and carcass traits. Each October, spring born calves were delivered to Clinton, Ruston, or Lake Charles loadout sites. Steers were identified by sire breed, tagged, weighed, assigned a feeder calf grade. Forty-six, 18, 26, and 10 percent of the steers graded large frame-thick muscle, large frame-moderate muscle, medium frame-thick muscle, and medium frame-moderate muscle, respectively. Steers were trucked to a commercial feedlot and sorted …

Design Guidelines Of A Therapeutic Garden For Autistic Children, Bonnie Barnes Hebert Jan 2003

Design Guidelines Of A Therapeutic Garden For Autistic Children, Bonnie Barnes Hebert

LSU Master's Theses

This study establishes a set of guidelines for designing a therapeutic garden for autistic children. To understand how a garden may provide benefit, the literature on healing gardens is reviewed. The history of gardens in hospital settings and other healthcare institutions is examined. In addition, published work on the effects of nature on stress and health outcomes and theories as to why nature is restorative is included in the review of the literature. Because the focus of the study is outdoor environments for autistic children, published works on children’s outdoor environments and the topic of play are reviewed as well. …

Metabolic Aspects Of Oryzanol In Rats, Michelle Smith Gillespie Jan 2003

Metabolic Aspects Of Oryzanol In Rats, Michelle Smith Gillespie

LSU Master's Theses

Using a rat model, this study compared the bioavailability of three forms of oryzanol, a compound extracted from rice bran oil that has been associated with improved cholesterol levels. Various methods of extracting lipids from serum and liver were explored to determine oryzanol absorption. Cholesterol levels were obtained via enzymatic colorimetric assay and GCMS. Sprague Dawley retired female breeder rats were sustained for 11 weeks on a cholesterol-free diet to which either no oryzanol was added (n = 19) or 2.8 g/kg of oryzanol was added as: 7% oryzanol rice bran oil (RO, n = 8), crystalline oryzanol (CO, n …

Subversive Bodies: Embodiment As Discursive Strategy In Women's Popular Literature Of The Long Eighteenth Century, Phyllis Ann Thompson Jan 2003

Subversive Bodies: Embodiment As Discursive Strategy In Women's Popular Literature Of The Long Eighteenth Century, Phyllis Ann Thompson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

“Subversive Bodies: Embodiment as Discursive Strategy in Women’s Popular Literature of the Long Eighteenth Century” examines literary representations of the body as strategies of resistance. This study demonstrates that Manley's Secret Memoirs from the New Atalantis, Haywood's Female Spectator, and Burney's Journal and Letters, as well as unpublished receipt books for medicinal and cosmetic preparations, challenge the prevailing masculinist notion of a passive, distinct topography of womanhood and lay the groundwork for a feminist tradition of recognizing the body as an explicit part of experience. Tracing the origins of today's critical perspectives, my study draws on the insights of recent …

Numerical Techniques For Excitation And Analysis Of Defect Modes In Photonic Crystals, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin Jan 2003

Numerical Techniques For Excitation And Analysis Of Defect Modes In Photonic Crystals, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Two numerical techniques for analysis of defect modes in photonic crystals are presented. Based on the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD), we use plane wave incidences and point sources for excitation and analysis. Using a total-field/scattered-field scheme, an ideal plane wave incident at different angles is implemented; defect modes are selectively excited and mode symmetries are probed. All modes can be excited by an incident plane wave along a non-symmetric direction of the crystal. Degenerate modes can also be differentiated using this method. A proper arrangement of point sources with positive and negative amplitudes in the cavity flexibly excites any chosen …

The Relationship Between Elementary School Foreign Language Study In Grades Three Through Five And Academic Achievement On The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills (Itbs) And The Fourth-Grade Louisiana Educational Assessment Program For The 21st Century (Leap 21) Test, Carolyn Joyce Taylor-Ward Jan 2003

The Relationship Between Elementary School Foreign Language Study In Grades Three Through Five And Academic Achievement On The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills (Itbs) And The Fourth-Grade Louisiana Educational Assessment Program For The 21st Century (Leap 21) Test, Carolyn Joyce Taylor-Ward

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The passage of the federal educational legislation, No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, established foreign languages as a core curricular content area. Nonetheless, educational policy makers at the state and local levels often opt to allocate greater resources and give instructional priority to content areas in which students, and ultimately the school systems themselves, are held accountable through high-stakes testing. Although foreign languages are designated as a core content area, instructional emphasis continues to be placed on curricular areas that factor into state educational accountability programs. The present study employed a mixed-methodology design. The primary goal was to explore …

Disarming The Externalist Threat To Self-Knowledge, Gabriel Guy Cate Jan 2003

Disarming The Externalist Threat To Self-Knowledge, Gabriel Guy Cate

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine various attempts to disarm the externalist threat to self-knowledge. That threat is engendered by a certain causal theory of meaning and reference, which suggests that empirical investigations may be required to know the contents of our own thoughts. It is claimed, then, that direct, non-inferential self-knowledge of our own mental states, is not possible if externalism is true. The leading compatibilist strategies that attempt to reconcile these apparently conflicting theses are explored and criticized. I conclude by offering what I take to be the essential features of a more successful compatibilist strategy.

An Anthropological Examination Of Classic Maya Burials From Moho Cay, Belize: Skeletal And Dental Evidence Of Demography, Diet And Health, Erin Suzanne Lund Jan 2003

An Anthropological Examination Of Classic Maya Burials From Moho Cay, Belize: Skeletal And Dental Evidence Of Demography, Diet And Health, Erin Suzanne Lund

LSU Master's Theses

In the Maya area, archaeological excavations have yielded an abundance of skeletal material from a multitude of sites throughout Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras. In 1979, a series of excavations led by Heather McKillop at Moho Cay, Belize, revealed a number of human interments. This thesis analyzes the Moho Cay skeletal collection composed of remains from eight discrete Late Classic (A.D. 600-800) burials and nine other archaeological units. Skeletal and dental analysis of the remains included assessing minimum number of individuals per burial and establishing age and sex for each individual. The bones were also examined for signs …

Psychosocial Predictors Of Dietary Fat Reduction: The Role Of Stress And The Transtheroetical Model In A Dietary Intervention, Jennifer L. Francis Jan 2003

Psychosocial Predictors Of Dietary Fat Reduction: The Role Of Stress And The Transtheroetical Model In A Dietary Intervention, Jennifer L. Francis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dietary fat is related to cardiovascular disease and numerous intensive, controlled clinical trials have successfully reduced dietary fat in symptomatic populations. However, there has been less success in large, community-based studies with healthy or mildly at-risk populations. Little is known about predictors associated with actual change in dietary fat intake and this is an important omission because dietary interventions are more likely to be successful if they are based on factors known to influence behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychosocial predictors of dietary fat and dietary fat reduction through the framework of the transtheoretical model …

Conservation Versus Survival: A Cultural Ecological Study Of Changing Settlement Patterns, Cultures, And Land Use In The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve Of Northeast Honduras, Elizabeth Ann Fraser Jan 2003

Conservation Versus Survival: A Cultural Ecological Study Of Changing Settlement Patterns, Cultures, And Land Use In The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve Of Northeast Honduras, Elizabeth Ann Fraser

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Conserving ecologically valuable areas is proclaimed a priority by governments, institutions, and citizens throughout the world. Preventing the erosion of the remaining indigenous cultures also receives widespread support. In response to these desires, numerous protected areas now exist; spaces that theoretically should attain both ecological and cultural preservation. However, many of these areas are found within a larger setting plagued by ongoing struggles to meet basic needs. Often these larger problems create a challenge to, if not work in opposition to, the original aims of protected areas. This study of nine communities looks at these and related issues in the …

Truth's Veil: Language And Meaning In Merleau-Ponty And Derrida, Helen Troy Mellon Jan 2003

Truth's Veil: Language And Meaning In Merleau-Ponty And Derrida, Helen Troy Mellon

LSU Master's Theses

The linguistic structuralism of Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) attracted the attention of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, prompting what is thought to be Merleau-Ponty’s “linguistic turn” of 1947. Saussure’s theory of the self-referential structure of linguistic signs as constitutive of value, was tied by Merleau-Ponty to his conception of the structure of intercommunication as constitutive of human value and meaning. Jacques Derrida, in the 1960s, also appealed to Saussure’s theory in formulating his thesis of a deferring and differing relationship between linguistic signs as constitutive of meaning, but rejected what he saw as the privileging of a metaphysics of presence-to-meaning in Saussure. One …

Feasibility Of Restoring The Louisiana Black Bear (Ursus Americanus Luteolus) To Portions Of Their Former Range, Kyle Ryan Van Why Jan 2003

Feasibility Of Restoring The Louisiana Black Bear (Ursus Americanus Luteolus) To Portions Of Their Former Range, Kyle Ryan Van Why

LSU Master's Theses

Black bears (Ursus americanus) historically occurred throughout much of North America’s forested landscapes, but loss of critical habitat and overharvest significantly reduced abundance and distribution. In the southeastern United States, black bear conservation has become a high priority and restoration has been suggested y to recolonize suitable habitat. My study focused on evaluating restoration of the Louisiana black bear (U. americanus luteolus) to the Red River Complex (RRC) in east-central Louisiana. This involved translocating female bears with new born cubs from source populations within Louisiana and monitoring their movements, habitat use, and social acceptance of the restoration program to determine …

Swimming Versus Voluntary Running Exercise On Bone Health In Ovariectomized Retired Breeder Rats, Shelly Ann Duhe

LSU Master's Theses

Physical activity may increase long bone calcium (Ca) content to preserve bone strength in postmenopausal women. This study determined the effect of compulsory swimming and voluntary running exercise on bone mineral density, bone Ca and phosphorus (P) content, and femoral neck and tibia strength in ovariectomized (OVX) retired breeder rats, as a model for postmenopausal women. Thirty-seven nine-month old Sprague Dawley rats were assigned randomly into one of four treatment groups for the nine-week study: OVX + running (OR; n=9); OVX + swimming (OS; n=10); OVX + no exercise (O; n=9); sham-surgery + no exercise (Sh; n=9). OR rats had …

The Therapeutic Value Of The Equine-Human Relationship In Recovery From Trauma: A Qualitative Analysis, Janet Yorke Jan 2003

The Therapeutic Value Of The Equine-Human Relationship In Recovery From Trauma: A Qualitative Analysis, Janet Yorke

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this research was to explore the nature of equine-human bonding and its therapeutic value in recovery from trauma. The study sample consisted of six participants who identified that their pre-existing relationships with horses were therapeutic in recovering from various types of trauma (i.e. car accidents, horse-related accidents, work accidents and health trauma). Using a phenomenological perspective and an emotionalist lens, though the use of semi-structured interviews and video-tapes of horse-rider interaction, the study sought to describe the nature of the equine human bond and how it is useful in trauma recovery. The research results show that equine-human …

Militarism Goes To School, Laura L. Finley Jan 2003

Militarism Goes To School, Laura L. Finley

Essays in Education

While there are many influences that shape how schools are structured one that has been largely ignored is the influence of militarism. Militarism refers to a set of values or ideologies that include hierarchical relationships and domination. This piece discusses the ways that schools are militaristic, including their authority, physical, academic, and athletic structures, the processes used by administrators and in classrooms, and the curriculums taught.

The Effect Of Slavery On Southern Farmland Values In The Antebellum And Postbellum Era, Brandon Devlin Jan 2003

The Effect Of Slavery On Southern Farmland Values In The Antebellum And Postbellum Era, Brandon Devlin

Honors Theses

In the past 30 years, the legacy of African-American slavery has experienced a transformation in historical perspective. Morality aside, several historians have suggested that the accepted views regarding slavery need revision, particularly in an economic sense. Utilizing cliometrics, census records, diaries, and first-hand accounts of slavery in the South, economic historians such as Robert Fogel and Stanley Engennan have made a compelling case for the viability and profitability of slavery by exposing the nuances of the system that historical generalities often ignore. Of course, words like "viable" and ''profitable" do not necessarily mean "virtuous"or even "preferable", but it does imply …

Bioterrorism Defense: Are State Mandated Compulsory Vaccination Programs An Infringement Upon A Citizen's Constitutional Rights, Brendon Kohrs Jan 2003

Bioterrorism Defense: Are State Mandated Compulsory Vaccination Programs An Infringement Upon A Citizen's Constitutional Rights, Brendon Kohrs

Journal of Law and Health

The agents of anthrax and smallpox threaten the health and welfare of the state citizenry and therefore the state can enact legislation appropriate to offset the possible harm. In order for the enacted legislation to withstand a constitutional challenge, the possible harm has to be a compelling governmental interest of public safety and welfare narrowly tailored to that goal. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the United States Department of Health and Human Services has the ability to recommend a compulsory vaccination program for citizens, and this program would not be in violation of a person's constitutional …

Best Methods For Increasing Medical Translators For Limited English Proficient Patients: The Carrot Or The Stick?, Paula Hein Jan 2003

Best Methods For Increasing Medical Translators For Limited English Proficient Patients: The Carrot Or The Stick?, Paula Hein

Journal of Law and Health

Private physicians struggle to provide translators for patients, especially in rural areas like the one in which Dr. Kerr practices. Translators cost anywhere from thirty dollars to four hundred dollars depending on such factors as the time needed to translate, whether or not the translator is trained as a medical translator, and the language that is being translated. Telephone language lines, which provide translation over the phone through a dial up service, costs providers an average of two dollars and fifty cents ($2.50) per minute. There is also the price of the extra personnel time that is required to develop, …

The Latex Allergy Crisis: Proposing A Healthy Solution To The Dilemma Facing The Medical Community, Lynn Cherne-Breckner Jan 2003

The Latex Allergy Crisis: Proposing A Healthy Solution To The Dilemma Facing The Medical Community, Lynn Cherne-Breckner

Journal of Law and Health

The explosion in the number and severity of latex allergies began with the emergence of the AIDS epidemic as the Centers for Disease Control issued universal precautions advising health care workers to use protective barriers to prevent the spread of the infection. This resulted in constant use of the gloves by medical workers and a great increase in demand for cost effective gloves. Essentially, the quality of the glove making process decreased, increasing the amount of allergy inducing proteins excreted to wearers. Afflicted workers include physicians, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, operating room personnel, laboratory technicians and ambulance attendants among others. …
