Senior Seminars

This paper has been written in order to teach the reader about a new programming language by NVidia called Cg. The author, an undergraduate computer science student at Bridgewater College, is still at a beginner's level of programming in Cg and relies heavily on a book called "The Cg Tutorial" (Fernando). However, the following paper will give excellent insight into the history, usability and programming functionality of the Cg language with background information on the history of Computer Graphics.

Regulating Babylon: Religion And Rebellion In Pre-Revolutionary North Carolina, Sarah E. King '03 Jan 2003

Regulating Babylon: Religion And Rebellion In Pre-Revolutionary North Carolina, Sarah E. King '03

Honors Projects, History

Past historians have situated the Regulator conflict in largely economic or social terms. James Whittenburg and others claim that at the time of the Regulation, a new and vast social division was present in backcountry society. The established backcountry settlers-the agrarian, yeoman farmers of Hermon Husbands' ilk-resented their recent displacement by mercantile and political interests. The Regulation, then, simply "crystallized widespread anxiety over the swift economic and political changes taking place in the piedmont." The Regulators used fleeting issues of the moment to rectify their lessening influence in North Carolina. Rachel Klein similarly argues in Unification of a Slave State …

The Role Of Prefrontal Theta Reset In Learning And Memory, Stephen W. Smith '03 Jan 2003

The Role Of Prefrontal Theta Reset In Learning And Memory, Stephen W. Smith '03

Honors Projects

Theta reset, in which the rhythmic firing of neurons stops and then restarts to the onset of a stimulus, is believed to improve encoding and retrieval of stimuli by causing stimuli to be time-locked to waves of depolarization in the HPC. Recent research by Williams et al. (in preparation) has demonstrated that, in rats, theta reset occurs 1) in several cortical areas including the anterior cingulate (AC), 2) occurs during different phases of a working memory task for different cortical areas, and 3) can be predictive of working memory task performance. In the current study, human participants received EEG recording …

Deal Protection Provisions In The Last Period Of Play, Sean J. Griffith Jan 2003

Deal Protection Provisions In The Last Period Of Play, Sean J. Griffith

Fordham Law Review

The ability to protect mergers is important to both targets and acquirors. A series of recent Chancery Court decisions, however, challenges the validity of deal protection provisions in merger agreements and threatens the stability of Delaware's established change of control paradigm. This article argues that last period concerns animate the Chancery Court's decisions and finds, in the last period problem, a theoretical principle capable of harmonizing these decisions with existing jurisprudence and providing a coherent approach to the practical problems raised by deal protection provisions.

Impact Of A Young-Earth Creationist Apologetics Course On Student Creation Worldview, Tom Henderson, Steve Deckard, David A. Dewitt Jan 2003

Impact Of A Young-Earth Creationist Apologetics Course On Student Creation Worldview, Tom Henderson, Steve Deckard, David A. Dewitt

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Science educators holding an evolutionary worldview are concerned about the teaching of young -Earth creationism (YEC) and generally oppose its presentation in public schools. This paper examines the influence of a YEC apologetics course on Creation and evolution worldview attitudes of Liberty University students. The creation worldview test (CWT) was administered and a total scale score along with three subscales scores in theology, science and age were analyzed. Student pre-test scores indicated some weaknesses, suggesting departure from a solid YEC worldview. Following the course, students shifted significantly toward stronger agreement with the YEC position in total score, science and age. …

The Feasibility Of Computer-Assisted Survey Interviewing In Africa: Experience From Two Rural Districts In Kenya, Paul C. Hewett, Annabel Erulkar, Barbara Mensch Jan 2003

The Feasibility Of Computer-Assisted Survey Interviewing In Africa: Experience From Two Rural Districts In Kenya, Paul C. Hewett, Annabel Erulkar, Barbara Mensch

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper explores the use of an audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (audio-CASI) methodology in a household survey of adolescents in two districts of Kenya. Computer software was developed as part of a research project comparing audio-CASI with traditional methods of interviewing about sensitive behaviors, including sexual initiation, risky sexual behavior, coerced sex, and drug and alcohol use. The paper describes the experience of carrying out a household-based study using computers and explores the technical challenges faced by the data collection teams. Few problems emerged with the computer hardware and software, despite the difficult interviewing conditions. The adolescent respondents easily adapted to …
