Hepatotprotective Natural Products, Samir Malhotra, Amrit Pal Singh
Hepatotprotective Natural Products, Samir Malhotra, Amrit Pal Singh
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Medicinal herbs are significant source of pharmaceutical drugs. Latest trends have shown increasing demand of phytodrugs and some medicinal herbs have proven hepatotprotective potential. Silymarin, a flavonol lignan mixture) extracted from the Silybum marianum (milk thistle) is a popular remedy for hepatic diseases. Today every herbal company is marketing formulations for liver disorders but the actual scene is that only selected medicinal herbs have been tested for hepatotprotective activity. Some herbal formulations claiming to be hepatoprotective may actually contain chemical constituents having hepatotoxic potential. Andrographolide (Andrographis paniculata), Glycyrrhizin (Glychyrrhiza glabra), Picrrorihzin (Picrorrhiza kurroa) and Hypo-phyllanthin (Phyllanthus niruri) are potential candidates …

Ethnobotanical Resources Of Manikhel Forests, Orakzai Tirah, Pakistan, Habib Ahmad, Samiullah Khan, Muhammad Hamayun
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Manikhel forests, the far southern extension of Hindu Kush Mountain ranges, exhibit rich floral diversity in its nearly 175 Km2 area. It comprises sub-tropical semi deciduous thorny forests in the southern low lying Mediterranean type of climate and evergreen Oak-Yew forests in the northern faces of the Himalayan type of climate. A wide variety of plants are present in the area but this paper includes only those species whose common use is either known locally or they are in daily use for various purposes. The present investigations comprise 172 plant species belonging to 80 families. Bulk of these plants exhibit …
The Myth Of Machismo: An Everyday Reality For Latin American Women, Patricia M. Hernandez
The Myth Of Machismo: An Everyday Reality For Latin American Women, Patricia M. Hernandez
St. Thomas Law Review
This paper attempts to present a loose, culturally driven definition of machismo and how this cultural belief affects a woman's "place" in Latin America. With this, another aim is to present a view of the available statistics regarding battering in Latin America. Finally, it is necessary to correlate machismo with the available laws and the ineffectiveness of their application. It is important to also recognize that women's rights groups within Latin America have attempted to pursue certain new avenues to combat domestic violence. Furthermore, the international community has begun to analyze the benefits and consequences associated with the attempt to …

Theorizing Community Justice Through Community Courts, Jeffrey Fagan, Victoria Malkin
Theorizing Community Justice Through Community Courts, Jeffrey Fagan, Victoria Malkin
Fordham Urban Law Journal
This article reports on research conducted on the Red Hook Community Justice Center in Brooklyn, New York. It theorizes the structure and process of community justice, focusing on the model offered by community courts and examining how the Red Hook Community Justice Center's development and implementation are products of its immersion in the intersection of societal, spatial, and political dynamic within the Red Hook neighborhood. The article begins by reviewing the sociological perspectives that converge in the historical development of "community justice." It continues by setting forth a framework of social regulation and control that shapes the internal workings of …

An Integrated, Secured, Open-Source Medical Prototype For Collaborative Patient Management On The Internet, Joseph Dabre Ramsey
An Integrated, Secured, Open-Source Medical Prototype For Collaborative Patient Management On The Internet, Joseph Dabre Ramsey
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Conventional approaches to building critical and secured systems are based on the use of commercial tools for development and maintenance. Changes in the marketplace and the acceptance of the open-source model have brought this assumption into question. The combination of open-source's rapid rise and the introduction of pervasive computing has made the computing industry more receptive to open-source tools and products. The open-source model allows systems to be controlled by a single individual or a small developer group that reduces dependence on individual experts. The availability of free system source codes, an expanding commercial support market, and increasing global collaborative …
Reenchanting International Law, Mark C. Modak-Truran
Reenchanting International Law, Mark C. Modak-Truran
Journal Articles
I will argue that international law needs religion because it is indeterminate and that international law should not attempt to resolve legal indeterminancy because this would require establishing an official international religion. Given the limitations of this article, however, I will not attempt to provide a comprehensive normative and descriptive account of law and international law to support this claim." My more modest expectations are to provide a normative theory of law to justify the interpretation of international law in cases in which international law is indeterminate.

The Role Of Eicosanoids On Nodulation Reactions To Bacterium Serratia Marcescens In Larvae Of Ostrinia Nubilalis, Hasan Tunaz, Ali̇ Arda Işikber, Mehmet Kubi̇lay Er
The Role Of Eicosanoids On Nodulation Reactions To Bacterium Serratia Marcescens In Larvae Of Ostrinia Nubilalis, Hasan Tunaz, Ali̇ Arda Işikber, Mehmet Kubi̇lay Er
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Nodulation is the first step of the cellular defense reactions to bacterial infections in insects. In the present study, injecting larvae of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, with eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors, immediately prior to intrahemocoelic injections of the bacterium, Serratia marcescens, sharply reduced the nodulation response to bacterial challenges. Separate treatments with specific inhibitors including dexamethasone (a phospholipase A_2 inhibitor), indomethacin (a cyclooxygenase inhibitor) and phenidone (a dual cyclooxgenase/lipoxygenase inhibitor) also impaired the ability of European corn borers to form nodules in reaction to bacterial challenges. The inhibitory influence of phenidone was apparent within 30 mins after infection, and …

As Iraq enters a new phase in its history, Australia is poised to play a leading role in the reconstruction of Iraq's agricultural sector. Initially, food security will be the main priority with later phases of the development process concentrating on harnessing agriculture as an engine for economic growth and poverty alleviation.
Western Australia has a long tradition of supplying countries of the Middle East with high quality foodstuffs and in implementing agricultural development projects. The Middle East is one of Western Australia's key trading partners, consuming an annual food production valued in excess of $1 billion. In recent times, …

Twenty-three mathematics activities that use environmental print materials are presented, along with two activities that focus on music education, one that highlights history concepts, and five science activities. The environmental print materials are words and images cut from food or other product packaging and mounted on mat board cards. Instructions for teachers regarding material preparation are given, along with directions for students to engage in each activity. Example layouts and labels for materials boxes are given for each activity. Mathematical topics include: more and less; numeration; addition and subtraction; time words; forming patterns; writing equations; story problems; chart coordinates; percents; …

Activities For Differentiated Instruction Addressing All Levels Of Bloom's Taxonomy And Eight Multiple Intelligences, Audrey C. Rule, L. H. Lord
Open Educational Resources
This manuscript contains 13 curriculum units designed to enhance differentiated instruction for learners with special needs from grades 1-12, including gifted students. It integrates Benjamin S. Bloom's levels of cognitive understanding with Howard Gardner's eight domains of intelligence to provide a framework for individualized instruction. Each unit has activities for the eight multiple intelligences (logical-mathematical intelligence, linguistic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, spatial intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and naturalistic intelligence) at each of Bloom's taxonomic levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The manuscript begins by explaining Bloom's and Gardner's contributions to educational research in the area of …
