During 2001, central Kentucky experienced acute transient epidemics of early and late fetal losses, pericarditis, and unilateral endophthalmitis, collectively referred to as mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS). A toxicokinetic/statistical analysis of experimental and field MRLS data was conducted using accelerated failure time (AFT) analysis of abortions following administration of Eastern tent caterpillars (ETCs; 100 or 50 g/day or 100 g of irradiated caterpillars/day) to late-term pregnant mares. In addition, 2001 late-term fetal loss field data were used in the analysis. Experimental data were fitted by AFT analysis at a high (P < .0001) significance. Times to first abortion (“lag time”) and abortion rates were dose dependent. Lag times decreased and abortion rates increased exponentially with dose. Calculated dose × response data curves allow interpretation of abortion data in terms of “intubated ETC equivalents.” Analysis suggested that field exposure to ETCs in 2001 in central Kentucky commenced on approximately April 27, was initially equivalent to approximately 5 g of intubated ETCs/day, and increased to approximately 30 g/day at the outbreak peak. This analysis accounts for many aspects of the epidemiology, clinical presentations, and manifestations of MRLS. It allows quantitative interpretation of experimental and field MRLS data and has implications for the basic mechanisms underlying MRLS. The results support suggestions that MRLS is caused by exposure to or ingestion of ETCs. The results also show that high levels of ETC exposure produce intense, focused outbreaks of MRLS, closely linked in time and place to dispersing ETCs, as occurred in central Kentucky in 2001. With less intense exposure, lag time is longer and abortions tend to spread out over time and may occur out of phase with ETC exposure, obscuring both diagnosis of this syndrome and the role of the caterpillars.

Habitat Associations And Ecology Of Sonoma Tree Vole (Arborimus Pomo) In Northwest California, Jennifer M. Jones Jan 2003

Habitat Associations And Ecology Of Sonoma Tree Vole (Arborimus Pomo) In Northwest California, Jennifer M. Jones

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The Sonoma tree vole (Arborimus porno) is a California Species of Special Concern and an important prey species of the Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). Management of A. porno has been limited by the scarcity of biological data and a lack of understanding of its habitat requirements. I compared relative tree vole abundance among three size classes of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga rnenziesii) stands in 2000: pole (15-28 cm DBH), unthinned young-growth (29-61 cm DBH), and mature (>61 cm DBH). Four stands of each size class were searched for A. pomo nests using line transects on The Pacific Lumber Company …

Isovolumetric Regulation In Mammal Cells: Role Of Taurine, B. Ordaz, R. Franco, National University Of Mexico Tuz

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The ability to regulate cell volume is an ancient conserved trait present in essentially all species through evolution. The maintenance of a constant cell volume is a homeostatic imperative in animal cells. Changes in cell water content affecting the concentration of intracellular messenger molecules impair the complex signaling network, crucial for cell functioning and intercellular communication. Although the renal homeostatic mechanisms exert a precise control of extracellular fluid osmolarity, this is challenged in a variety of pathological situations. The intracellular volume constancy is continuously compromised by the generation of local and transient osmotic microgradients, associated with nutrients uptake, secretion, cytoskeleton …

Are Chlorella Viruses A Rich Source Of Ion Channel Genes?, Ming Kang, Anna Moroni, Sabrina Gazzarrini, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Plaque-forming dsDNA (>330 kb) viruses that infect certain unicellular, eukaryotic chlorella-like green algae contain ~375 protein-encoding genes. These proteins include a 94 amino acid K+ channel protein, called Kcv, as well as two putative ligand-gated ion channels. The viruses also encode other proteins that could be involved in the assembly and/ or function of ion channels, including protein kinases and a phosphatase, polyamine biosynthetic enzymes and histamine decarboxylase.

State Of Our Estuaries 2003, New Hampshire Estuaries Project Jan 2003

State Of Our Estuaries 2003, New Hampshire Estuaries Project

PREP Reports & Publications

New Hampshire’s estuaries are dynamic, complex systems that greatly influence the Seacoast’s economy, communities, quality of life and environment. To understand how these systems function and to gauge their relative health, the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) tracks key environmental indicators and evaluates their status against a set of management goals. This report communicates the status of 12 of the 30 environmental indicators tracked by the NHEP. For each indicator it provides the reader with the associated NHEP management goal, explanation of supporting data, and some of the NHEP supported activities that help achieve the management goal.

Fungal Biology And Agriculture: Revisiting The Field, O. Yarden, D. J. Ebbole, S. Freeman, R. J. Rodriguez, M. B. Dickman

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Plant pathology has made significant progress over the years, a process that involved overcoming a variety of conceptual and technological hurdles. Descriptive mycology and the advent of chemical plant-disease management have been followed by biochemical and physiological studies of fungi and their hosts. The later establishment of biochemical genetics along with the introduction of DNA-mediated transformation have set the stage for dissection of gene function and advances in our understanding of fungal cell biology and plant–fungus interactions. Currently, with the advent of high-throughput technologies, we have the capacity to acquire vast data sets that have direct relevance to the numerous …

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze Jan 2003

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze

Kaleidoscope

Over four million individuals in the United States currently suffer from Alzheimer's disease (AD), a devastating disorder of progressive dementia. Within the next several decades, AD is expected to affect over 22 million people globally. AD can only be definitively diagnosed by postmortem examination. Thus, investigation into the specific pathogenesis of neuronal degeneration and death in AD on a biochemical level is essential for both earlier diagnosis and potential treatment and prevention options. Overproduction of amyloid [3-peptide (A[3) in the brain leads to both free radical oxidative stress and toxicity to neurons in AD. My undergraduate biochemical studies with regard …
