The American Encaustic Tiling Company (1875-1937) And 'Art Tiles' In The West Franklin Street Historic District, Richmond, Virginia, Erika June Schmelzer

Theses and Dissertations

According to the tile historian Thomas Bruhn, the period between 1870 and 1930 was the only period when tiles had a significant role in American ceramics. One of the leading tile companies during this period was the American Encaustic Tiling Company of Zanesville, Ohio, which created high-quality art tile. Virginia Commonwealth University has a virtual gallery of American Encaustic tiles in a four-block range along West Franklin Street. In particular, Virginia Commonwealth University has embossed tile fireplace surrounds in three houses that can be matched up to the American Encaustic catalogue of ca. 1890. Two of these houses have tile …

The Detection Of Genetic Toxicity In Marine Organisms, Vikki Cheung Jan 2003

The Detection Of Genetic Toxicity In Marine Organisms, Vikki Cheung

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Studies were undertaken to measure genetic toxicity at the molecular and cytogenetic levels of biological organisation in marine invertebrates and flatfish. The responses in the early life stages and adult life stages of marine invertebrates (Mytilus edulis and Platynereis dumerilii) were measured following exposures to the physical agent ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and representative compounds of the chemical group, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in laboratory conditions. Also, the potential changes of toxicity of PAH contaminants caused by interactive effects with UVR were evaluated. In a collaborative study with researchers at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), genotoxic measurements …

Importance Of Seagrass Beds As A Habitat For Fishery Species Around Jersey, Emma Louise Jackson Jan 2003

Importance Of Seagrass Beds As A Habitat For Fishery Species Around Jersey, Emma Louise Jackson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Worldwide, seagrass habitats have been identified as important nursery areas, refugia and feeding grounds for many faunal species, including those of commercial and recreational value. Their importance as both permanent and temporary habitats has been recognised in UK fisheries management and conservation strategies; however, it must be emphasised that current knowledge of the roles of seagrass habitats originates mostly fromm research carried out outside the UK. Also, the subtidal distribution of Zostera around the British Isles has not been rigorously quantified at many locations. Local studies are essential for providing the relevant information required by fishery agencies to make valued …

Spatial And Temporal Variation In Diet And Prey Preference Of Nursery-Bound Juvenile Lemon Sharks (Negaprion Brevirostris) At Bimini, Bahamas, Steven Paul Newman Jan 2003

Spatial And Temporal Variation In Diet And Prey Preference Of Nursery-Bound Juvenile Lemon Sharks (Negaprion Brevirostris) At Bimini, Bahamas, Steven Paul Newman

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Prey selection has never been determined in an elasmobranch, primarily because of the large home ranges possessed by adults making accurate quantification of prey in the environment problematic. Juvenile lemon sharks spend their first few years of life within protected nursery grounds, enabling the first quantification of prey selection due to the restricted area that they inhabit. Growth and survival of juvenile lemon sharks strongly influences adult fitness and recruitment, and therefore prey selection may play an important role in the life history of lemon sharks. The selection of a preferred species or size of prey by juvenile lemon sharks …

Extraction Of A Valuable Compound From A Waste Stream For Adm Ringaskiddy, Colin G. Burkley Jan 2003

Extraction Of A Valuable Compound From A Waste Stream For Adm Ringaskiddy, Colin G. Burkley

Theses

This thesis was originally conceived as a potential Masters Degree research programme by the management of ADM Ringaskiddy as a means of maximizing throughput through the plant’s wastewater treatment facility. This facility is a major producer of citric acid using beet molasses and a fermentation process. It was proposed that removal of a compound, known as betaine, from the citric acid process waste stream would reduce the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) content of the waste requiring treatment before disposal. This would be achieved by using the citric acid process waste as the feedstock for a betaine extraction process. The wastewater …

Human Health Impacts Of Forest Fires In The Southern United States: A Literature Review, Cynthia T. Fowler Jan 2003

Human Health Impacts Of Forest Fires In The Southern United States: A Literature Review, Cynthia T. Fowler

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Forestry management practices can shape patterns of health, illness, and disease. A primary goal for owners of federal, state, and private forests is to craft ecosystem management plans that simultaneously optimize forest health and human health. Firea major forest management issue in the United Statescomplicates these goals. Wildfires are natural phenomena with unpredictable effects. Controlled fires, on the other hand, are often prescribed to reduce biomass fuels, reduce wildfire risks, and protect resource values. While fires can enhance the health of fire-adapted ecosystems, research on the human health impacts of smoke from forest fires is somewhat equivocal. This article synthesizes …

Human Utilization Of Subsurface Extraterrestrial Environments: Final Report, Penelope J. Boston, R. D. Frederick, Val Hildreth-Werker

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Caves have been used in the ancient past as shelter or habitat by many organisms (including humans). Since antiquity, humans have explored caves for the minerals they contain and sometimes for ceremonial purposes. Over the past century, caves have become the target of increasing exploration, scientific research, and recreation. The use of caves on extraterrestrial bodies for human habitation has been suggested by several investigators. Lunar lava tube bases received early attention because lava tubes were clearly visible in lunar images from the Apollo Era. More recently, Mars Observer Camera data has shown us clear evidence of large tubes visible …

The Structure Of Communication As A Challenge For Theology, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2003

The Structure Of Communication As A Challenge For Theology, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Even more than any content of communication, its structures influence theology by forming the framework for thinking about and sharing reflections on religious experience. This essay examines three characteristic, but often overlooked, communication structures: oral vs. written and printed communication and the contemporary move to "secondary oral" styles; communication technology's sense of place; and the uses of visual space as guides to the interpretation of experience. Since each of these structures shapes theology, a more conscious awareness of them challenges theology to take the role of communication more seriously.

Globalization In A Fallen World: Redeeming Dust, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 2003

Globalization In A Fallen World: Redeeming Dust, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

The paradigm used in discussions about academic globalization is the “rational” discourse of the late twentieth century. This paradigm is manifested in university and political-cultural commentary in the United States and Great Britain. The term “globalization” immediately evokes a paradox. The paradox of the globe is it risks confusing itself with the universe. One key axis of of the paradox is between “good” globalization and “bad” globalization, another between the “is” and the “ought” of globalization.

A world-wide culture, democracy, or economy is inherently fallen. Attending to the forces that would pull us back together is one key to overcome …

Norms And Interests, Geoffrey P. Miller Jan 2003

Norms And Interests, Geoffrey P. Miller

Faculty Articles

There is thus a wide degree of debate in the literature about the degree to which social norms reflect spontaneous private ordering. Despite the disagreement, however, the literature to date has not recognized a key feature of many social norms: Social norms can-and often do-function as means by which members of interest groups acquire benefits for their members. This concept requires elaboration, and will be discussed at length in the pages that follow. The basic intuition is simple, however: by manipulating social norms, groups can enrich themselves-either monetarily or by obtaining non-pecuniary benefits such as esteem or deference-at the expense …

The Law And Economics Of Critical Race Theory, Devon W. Carbado, Mitu Gulati Jan 2003

The Law And Economics Of Critical Race Theory, Devon W. Carbado, Mitu Gulati

Faculty Articles

Legal academics often perceive law and economics (L&E) and critical race theory (CRT) as oppositional discourses. Using a recently published collection of essays on CRT as a starting point, we argue that the understanding of workplace discrimination can be furthered through a collaboration between L&E and CRT. L&E's strength is in its attention to incentives and norms, specifically its concern with explicating how norms incentivize behavior. Its limitation is that it treats race as exogenous and static. Thus, the literature fails to consider how institutional norms affect, and are affected by, race. To put the point another way, L&E does …

Winter Ecology Of Kokanee: Implications For Salmon Management, G. B. Steinhart, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We sampled various limnological parameters and measured growth and diet of age-0 kokanee Oncorhynchus nerka (lacustrine sockeye salmon) during two winters in a high-mountain lake of the Sawtooth Valley, Idaho. Although winter has been recognized as an important period for many warmwater fishes and for stream-dwelling salmonids, winter limitations have only recently been studied for coolwater and coldwater species. Ice and snow cover in winter limited light penetration. As a result, chlorophyll-a and zooplankton density were lower in ice-covered periods than during ice-free periods. The weight of stomach contents was often below a maintenance ration, yet the incidence of empty …
