Genealogical Relationships Influence The Probability Of Infection With Bovine Tuberculosis And Microgeographic Genetic Structure In Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer, Julie Anne Blanchong

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Zoonoses are of increasing importance to wildlife conservation and human health. It has become increasingly recognized that wildlife ecology plays a key role in disease transmission in wildlife populations. In domestic populations, contacts among individuals are controlled by humans and disease transmission is often density dependent. Unlike domestic animals, wildlife populations often have complex social systems in whch contacts among individuals are not solely density dependent, and can play an important role in the transmission and maintenance of disease.

Low Water Stream Crossings for Cattle (LWSC)

Livestock access to streams, specifically, cattle access to streams in pastures has become of concern in the development of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). There is very little information available to planners on the contribution of nitrogen, ammonia, phosphorus, and human health-related microorganisms to stream segments from rangeland cattle. A common modeling solution in the development of TMDLs is to exclude livestock from streams in order to reduce nutrient loads. Although this approach seems simplistic, it is problematic for owners and managers of rangeland livestock.
Many producers are now choosing to supply water …

Excerpt from Seabiscuit

The halcyon days at the Tijuana track came to a spectacular end. On the backstretch early each morning men guided teams of horses on circuits of the barns, shoveling the mucked-out manure into wagons and driving the teams up the hill behind the backstretch, where they would dump it. The pile had been accumulating since 1917, and because the city received little rain to wash it down, it was enormous. “Oh my gosh.” Remembered trainer Jimmy Jones. “ It was as big as the grandstand.” Inside its depths, the manure fermented, generating scalding heat.
To the locals, …

Land Application Setback and Buffer Requirements for NPDES Permitted Large CAFOs

Large Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) owners/operators are required to implement setbacks, buffers, or an alternative conservation practice on all fields to which manure is applied. This newsletter discusses the federal rules and some guidance on how the rule may be applied to land application sites. The setbacks and buffer requirements apply to large CAFOs only. Most states are authorized to implement the CAFO program and may have additional, more stringent requirements. Check with your state permitting authority to determine the requirements that apply to your operation.

The New CAFO Rules: What is Required in a Nutrient Management Plan?

As a part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) Final Rule, all CAFO owners are required to apply for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. Part of the process includes developing and implementing a Nutrient Management Plan (NMP). At a minimum, an NMP must include Best Management Practices (BMPs) and, for large CAFOs, procedures necessary to achieve effluent limitation guidelines (ELGs).

New EPA Rules Targeting Livestock and Poultry Industry Congress passed the Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972 to "restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation's waters." Among its core provisions, it prohibits the discharge of pollutants from a point source to waters of the United States except as authorized by an NPDES permit. EPA's regulation of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) under the CWA dates to the 1970s. EPA established effluent guidelines for feedlots in 1974 based on the best available technology that was economically achievable for the industry. CAFO regulations issued in 1976 determined …

Integrating Animal Feeding Decisions into CNMP Processes: Part 1

Environmental planning in animal production systems often requires an estimate of nutrient excretion. Standard values published by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) (SCS 1992), American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE 1999), and MidWest Plan Service (MWPS 2000) commonly have been used for this purpose. However, these current procedures do not reflect the impact of producers' animal dietary decisions on nutrient excretion. The increasing variety of feed ingredient options, changes in nutritional programs to match improving genetic potential, and feeding strategies designed to reduce nutrient excretion are influencing the amount of …

Unhappy Anniversary - Thirty Years Since Miller V. California: The Legacy Of The Supreme Court's Misjudgement On Obscenity, Daniel Mark Cohen Jan 2003

Unhappy Anniversary - Thirty Years Since Miller V. California: The Legacy Of The Supreme Court's Misjudgement On Obscenity, Daniel Mark Cohen

St. Thomas Law Review

If it is true, as Aristotle suggested, that man is by nature a political animal, the current state of American society demonstrates, to any who might doubt the proposition, that man is equally, if not more so, a sexual one. With successive blessings by the Supreme Court, and so, with legal and social impunity, the companion American realms of commerce and entertainment are now thoroughly suffused with images of an openly sexual nature and purpose. These images, generated with conscious calculation and without discrimination as to the age or interest of potential recipients, are employed primarily for pecuniary purpose-that is, …

Categories And Similarities: A Note On Circularity, L. David Ritchie Jan 2003

Categories And Similarities: A Note On Circularity, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Theories of metaphor comprehension that rely on category assignment based on common characteristics (Keysar & Glucksberg, 1992), a comparison between characteristics or relationships of source and target (Chiappe & Kennedy, 2001), or a mapping of characteristics or relationships from source to target (Gentner & Bowdle, 2001) are inherently circular, since these comparisons, mappings, or categories usually make sense only after the underlying metaphor has already been understood. This inherent circularity is avoided by approaches such as conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and conceptual blending theory (Fauconnier & Turner, 1998) that seek to explain metaphors in terms of underlying …

Cloning And Expression Of Dazl In Rana Pipiens, Jamie Boorech Jan 2003

Cloning And Expression Of Dazl In Rana Pipiens, Jamie Boorech

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The DAZ gene on the human Y chromosome has been implicated in male fertility. Humans and other animals possess an autosomal version of this gene, referred to as DAZ-like or Dazl, which functions in gametogenesis and fertility. In order to expand our knowledge of Dazl, I cloned Dazl from the northern leopard frog Rana pipiens. To obtain the clone, I screened a R. pipiens ovary cDNA library with a RpDazl-specific PCR-generated radioactive probe. RpDazl, as determined by sequencing, is 3.5kb in length, with an 843 nucleotide open reading frame (ORF) and a 3' untranslated region (UTR) of 2635 nucleotides. At …

Transformation Of Arsenic Oxyanions In Bacterial And Model Systems, Ganna Polshyna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The HPLC-UV-Vis method with 7.5 mM sulfuric acid as a mobile phase and 195 nm wavelength detection was used for the separation and quantification of As(III) and As(V) in bacterial media used for growing of Clostridium sp. Strain OhILAs bacteria. In this method, the arsenic species were eluted in order As(V) > As(III), and the retention time were not affected by bacteria media matrix. It has been shown that the shape of the curve of increasing of the As(III) concentration is similar to that of bacteria growing. The main disadvantage of the present method is its failure to separate As(III) ions …

Using Pc12 Cells And Rat Cortical Neurons To Evaluate Poly(Caprolactone) And Collagenous Microcarriers For Applications In Nerve Guide Fabrication, Rebecca Waddell Jan 2003

Using Pc12 Cells And Rat Cortical Neurons To Evaluate Poly(Caprolactone) And Collagenous Microcarriers For Applications In Nerve Guide Fabrication, Rebecca Waddell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tissue-engineered nerve guides can provide mechanical support as well as biochemical stimulation for nerve regeneration. PC12 cells and rat cortical neurons were used to test poly(caprolactone) (PCL), collagenous microcarriers (CultiSphers), and a novel composite of the two materials as an initial step in the fabrication of multi-channeled nerve guides. PC12 cells were found to attach, proliferate and differentiate on laminin-coated PCL and on CultiSphers. When the initial concentration of PC12 cells was increased, the percentage of CultiSphers with cells attached increased as well. Changing the cell culture conditions from static to dynamic, however, had the opposite effect on cell attachment. …

G03-1487 Fat And Fat Substitutes, Georgia Jones

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

For some people, fat has a negative connotation. However, fat is a necessary nutrient and provides many functions in food products.

Fats are a source of energy for the body and supply essential fatty acids, such as linoleic and linolenic. They are required for maintaining healthy skin and regulating cholesterol production. Fats are used to carry fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and aid in their absorption from the intestine.

Fats play a key role in determining texture, taste and flavor of foods and affect the acceptability of food. They provide the smooth texture of salad dressing, the creamy …

Explanation Of Statistics Used In This Report Jan 2003

Explanation Of Statistics Used In This Report

Nebraska Swine Reports

Pigs treated alike vary in performance due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effect we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an “equal” group of pigs on each treatment. The natural variability among pigs and the number of pigs per treatment determine the expected variation among treatment groups due to random sampling.
