G03-1520 Current Issues Affecting Youth Swine Shows, Rosie Nold Jan 2003

G03-1520 Current Issues Affecting Youth Swine Shows, Rosie Nold

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The original purpose of youth livestock shows was two-fold: 1) to provide an educational experience where young people could learn animal management practices, as well as personal/character development; and 2) to recognize the best animals in the industry.

This NebGuide addresses practices which have developed to enhance the appearance of a pig that is to be exhibited, but which may be detrimental to the commercial pork industry.

G03-1514 Use Of Feed Contaminated With Fungal (Mold) Toxins (Mycotoxins), Michael P. Carlson, Steve M. Ensley Jan 2003

G03-1514 Use Of Feed Contaminated With Fungal (Mold) Toxins (Mycotoxins), Michael P. Carlson, Steve M. Ensley

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Mycotoxins are chemicals produced by fungi (molds) under certain conditions. They are not essential for fungal growth or reproduction, and they are toxic to animals or humans. They are naturally occurring chemicals found in grains, food and feed consumed by humans and animals and cannot be completely avoided. Accordingly, we try to control the amount of such chemicals ingested by humans and animals.

The purpose of this NebGuide is to provide guidelines on use of mycotoxin-contaminated feeds.

Sensory Integration Dysfunction In Urban Head Start Populations: Why Children Have This Disorder And What Teachers Can Do About It, Helen Frazier Jan 2003

Sensory Integration Dysfunction In Urban Head Start Populations: Why Children Have This Disorder And What Teachers Can Do About It, Helen Frazier

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This paper addresses the environmental causes of and treatment for sensory integration disorder among children living in urban poverty. Established and current research is examined in order to provide a foundation for the practical aspects of this paper. This paper presents a general description of a Head Start program designed to support sensory integration and includes specific activities that support the tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular sensory systems. It concludes that, as a result of pre- and post-natal environmental factors that interfere with effective sensory integration, many Head Start children are not yet ready to learn to read.

An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Management: Using Individual Behaviour To Predict The Indirect Effects Of Antarctic Krill Fisheries On Penguin Foraging, Suzanne H. Alonzo, Paul Switzer, Marc Mangel Jan 2003

An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Management: Using Individual Behaviour To Predict The Indirect Effects Of Antarctic Krill Fisheries On Penguin Foraging, Suzanne H. Alonzo, Paul Switzer, Marc Mangel

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Summary 1. Changes in species' abundance and distributions caused by human disturbances can have indirect effects on other species in a community. Although ecosystem approaches to management are becoming increasingly prevalent, they require a fuller understand- ing of how individual behaviour determines interactions within and between species. 2. Ecological interactions involving krill are of major importance to many species within the Antarctic. Despite extensive knowledge of the ecosystem that they occupy, there is still incomplete understanding of the links between species and the effect of environmental conditions on these interactions. In this study, we extended a behavioural model used previously …

Effects Of Experience And Body Size On Refuge Choice In The Crayfish Orconectes Immunis, Patrick S. Forsythe, Deborah S. Wyatt, Paul V. Switzer

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

We investigated whether refuge size or experience with a refuge affected the refuge use of male Orconectes immunis crayfish. Individuals were given choices among seven refuges for 10 consecutive days. Refuges were formed from equal length but different diameter PVC pipe and placed in an array in a random sequence. Three treatments were used. In the Novel Refuge treatment, individuals were placed in a new test arena with a new arrangement of cleaned refuges every day. In the Nonremoval treatment, individuals were left in the same arena with the same set of refuges each day. In the Removal treatment, individuals …

Ethnohistory And Paleopathology Of A Late Woodland Dog, Brendan Burke Jan 2003

Ethnohistory And Paleopathology Of A Late Woodland Dog, Brendan Burke

Theses & Honors Papers

In this paper, the author approaches a dog burial in the same aspect humans treat their burials. With this, the author was able to uncover what the pathological life history of the dog was. The author was able to support their hypothesis that dogs in the Late-Woodland culture served the role of high relative importance and also as symbols of religious meaning.

A Protein Kinase From Colletotrichum Trifolii Is Induced By Plant Cutin And Is Required For Appressorium Formation, M. B. Dickman, Y.-S. Ha, Z. Yang, B. J. Adams, C. Huang

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

When certain phytopathogenic fungi contact plant surfaces, specialized infection structures (appressoria) are produced that facilitate penetration of the plant external barrier; the cuticle. Recognition of this hydrophobic host surface must be sensed by the fungus, initiating the appropriate signaling pathway or pathways for pathogenic development. Using polymerase chain reaction and primers designed from mammalian protein kinase C sequences (PKC), we have isolated, cloned, and characterized a protein kinase from Colletotrichum trifolii, causal agent of alfalfa anthracnose. Though sequence analysis indicated conserved sequences in mammalian PKC genes, we were unable to induce activity of the fungal protein using known activators …

Reflections On The Field: Imagining The Future Of The Anthropology Of Education If We Take Laura Nader Seriously, Edmund T. Hamann Jan 2003

Reflections On The Field: Imagining The Future Of The Anthropology Of Education If We Take Laura Nader Seriously, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The large corpus of scholarship of cultural anthropologist Laura Nader is relevant to the contemporary practice of the anthropology of education. In particular, her work is relevant to contemporary debates about methodology and what constitutes “scientifically based” education research; to the prospect and need for more cross-fertilization within the discipline of anthropology; and for the proud assertion of anthropology’s distinctive suitability for understanding and responding to many contemporary educational challenges, including how to have anthropologically derived insights more favorably compete in the “marketplace of ideas” against less empirically grounded claims and strategies.

A New Bottom Line : The Ethics Of Profitability Through Environmental Sustainability, Aaron W. Hull

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This in-depth research paper will explore and apply ethical theories concerning profitability and environmental sustainability. Applying specific ethical frameworks to a case study will demonstrate ways in which ethical policies and practices have proven both economically sound and environmentally sustainable. This project will detail the ways in which a local case study involving forestry management, natural waste disposal systems, and watershed management in Santa Cruz County has implemented ethical practices that recognize the full value of natural systems and the potential profits in protecting them. In applying ethical frameworks, this project will take into account the potential effects of such …

Size Doesn't Matter: Microbial Selection Experiments Address Ecological Phenomena, Michael Feldgarden, Daniel M. Stoebel, Dustin Brisson, Daniel E. Dykhuizen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Experimental evolution is relevant to ecology because it can connect physiology, and in particular metabolism, to questions in ecology. The investigation of the linkage between the environment and the evolution of metabolism is tractable because these experiments manipulate a very simple environment to produce predictable evolutionary outcomes. In doing so, microbial selection experiments can examine the causal elements of natural selection: how specific traits in varying environments will yield different fitnesses. Here, we review the methodology of microbial evolution experiments and address three issues that are relevant to ecologists: genotype-by-environment interactions, ecological diversification due to specialization, and negative frequency-dependent selection. …

Environmental Sovereignty Discourse Of The Brazilian Amazon: National Politics And The Globalization Of Indigenous Resistance, Anne Marie Todd Jan 2003

Environmental Sovereignty Discourse Of The Brazilian Amazon: National Politics And The Globalization Of Indigenous Resistance, Anne Marie Todd

Faculty Publications

This analysis explores the connection between globalization and national identity in cultural expressions of environmental sovereignty. Competing claims to resources in the Brazilian Amazon reflect changing notions of state authority and the role of indigenous citizens in protection of biodiversity. The debate between Brazilian state governments and the Yanomami Indians and seringueiros (Brazilian Rubber Tapper communities) illustrates the complex interaction of national identity and expressions of local culture in a global ecological context.

Effects Of Leafy Spurge Infestation On Grassland Birds, Daniel M. Scheiman, Eric K. Bollinger, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 2003

Effects Of Leafy Spurge Infestation On Grassland Birds, Daniel M. Scheiman, Eric K. Bollinger, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Grassland bird populations are declining. Invasive plant species may be contributing to these declines by altering habitat quality. However, the effects of invasive plants on grassland birds are largely unknown. Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) is an exotic, invasive weed in the northern Great Plains. We examined the effects of leafy spurge infestation on densities of breeding birds, nest-site selection, and nest success in grasslands on the Sheyenne National Grassland (SNG), North Dakota, USA, 1999-2000. We categorized spurge-infested grasslands into 3 groups (low, medium, high), based on the area covered by spurge patches. We surveyed 75 100-m-radius circular points …

Restoration Of The Red Wolf, Michael K. Phillips, V. Gary Henry, Brian T. Kelly Jan 2003

Restoration Of The Red Wolf, Michael K. Phillips, V. Gary Henry, Brian T. Kelly

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

"WOLFERS" IN NORTHEASTERN North Carolina were busy on February 5, 1768. Records from the Tyrrell County courthouse read:

Giles Long and Thomas Wilkinson awarded one pound for a certified wolf scalp; Jeremiah Norman awarded two pounds for certified wolf and wild-cat scalps; Davenport Smithwick awarded one pound for a certified wolf-scalp.

Such was the nature of the war on the wolf: people killed them for money. The belief of the time held that the war was necessary because it was humankind's manifest destiny to tame the wilderness. And for the wilderness to be tame, the wolf had to be exterminated. …

Wolf-Prey Relations, L. David Mech, Rolf O. Peterson Jan 2003

Wolf-Prey Relations, L. David Mech, Rolf O. Peterson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

AS 1 (L. o. MECH) watched from a small ski plane while fifteen wolves surrounded a moose on snowy Isle Royale, I had no idea this encounter would typify observations I would make during 40 more years of studying wolf-prey interactions.

My usual routine while observing wolves hunting was to have my pilot keep circling broadly over the scene so I could watch the wolves' attacks without disturbing any of the animals. Only this time there was no attack. The moose held the wolves at bay for about 5 minutes (fig. p), and then the pack left.

From this observation …

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Broad-scale information in concert with conservation of individual species must be used to develop conservation priorities and a more integrated ecosystem protection strategy. In 1999 the United States Forest Service initiated an approach for the 1.2 x 106 ha of national grasslands in the Northern Great Plains to fulfill the requirement to maintain viable populations of all native and desirable introduced vertebrate and plant species. The challenge was threefold: 1) develop basic building blocks in the conservation planning approach, 2) apply the approach to national grasslands, and 3) overcome differences that may exist in agency-specific legal and policy requirements. Key …

Primaquine For Prevention Of Malaria In Travelers, J. Kevin Baird, David J. Fryauff, Stephen L. Hoffman Jan 2003

Primaquine For Prevention Of Malaria In Travelers, J. Kevin Baird, David J. Fryauff, Stephen L. Hoffman

United States Navy: Publications

An expanding risk and range of endemic malaria threatens travelers. Primaquine is an old drug recently demonstrated to offer effective prophylaxis. Clinical trials conducted in Indonesia, Kenya, and Colombia showed that a primaquine base (30 mg per day) had protective efficacy against Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax of 85%–93%. Among 339 children (age, >8 years) and adults taking this regimen for 12– 52 weeks, there was no greater risk of adverse symptomatic events among primaquine users than among recipients of placebo in double-blind studies. Among 151 subjects evaluated after 20 or 52 weeks of daily primaquine therapy, methemoglobinemia was found …
