Parasitism, The Diversity Of Life, And Paleoparasitology, Adauto Araújo, Ana M. Jansen, Françoise Bouchet, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz F. Ferreira Feb 2003

Parasitism, The Diversity Of Life, And Paleoparasitology, Adauto Araújo, Ana M. Jansen, Françoise Bouchet, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz F. Ferreira

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The parasite-host-environment system is dynamic, with several points of equilibrium. This makes it difficult to trace the thresholds between benefit and damage, and therefore, the definitions of commensalism, mutualism, and symbiosis become worthless. Therefore, the same concept of parasitism may encompass commensalism, mutualism, and symbiosis. Parasitism is essential for life. Life emerged as a consequence of parasitism at the molecular level, and intracellular parasitism created evolutive events that allowed species to diversify. An ecological and evolutive approach to the study of parasitism is presented here. Studies of the origin and evolution of parasitism have new perspectives with the development of …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

During a paleoparasitological survey of several animal mummies (Cavia aperea f. porcellus and Canis familiaris) from Chiribaya Baja, an archaeological site in Southern Peru, an unexpected find was made. In the well preserved fur, large numbers of mummified fleas (Pulex simulans/irritans) that parasitized the animals during life were encountered. Due to the relative recent event of the host mummification and the outstanding preservation of the fleas, an attempt for the retrieval of DNA was made. A DNA extraction and sequencing protocol for archaeological ectoparasitic remains has been established, taking additional studies for tissue and protein preservation into account. Tissue preservation …

Comparative Analysis Of Microsatellite Loci In Four Fruit Fly Species Of The Genus Ceratitis (Diptera: Tephritidae), F. N. Baliraine, M. Bonizzoni, E. O. Osir, S. A. Lux, F. J. Mulaa, L. Zheng, L. M. Gomulski, G. Gasperi, A. R. Malacrida

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The possibility to cross-species amplify microsatellites in fruit flies of the genus Ceratitis was tested with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by analysing 23 Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) microsatellite markers on the genomic DNA of three other economically important, congeneric species: C. rosa (Karsch), C. fasciventris (Bezzi) and C. cosyra (Walker). Twenty-two primer pairs produced amplification products in at least one of the three species tested. The majority of the products were similar, if not identical in size to those expected in C. capitata. The structures of the repeat motifs and their flanking sequences were examined for a total of 79 …

Decision Dominance: Exploiting Transformational Asymmetries, Merrick E. Krause Feb 2003

Decision Dominance: Exploiting Transformational Asymmetries, Merrick E. Krause

Defense Horizons

This paper introduces a new operational concept—decision dominance—to help guide the strategic employment of U.S. forces in wartime. This concept is not a replacement for existing paradigms. If added to the current list, however, it may better illuminate how American forces can operate effectively in ways that will achieve their political-military goals more decisively in future wars.

Decision dominance builds upon current operational concepts, particularly effects-based operations and rapid decisive operations. Yet it goes further by giving warfighting options to shape the operational and strategic decisions of an adversary. Decision dominance is an attempt to exploit emerging transformational …

Effects Of Tacrolimus On Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury., Shawn D. St Peter, Adyr A. Moss, David C. Mulligan Feb 2003

Effects Of Tacrolimus On Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury., Shawn D. St Peter, Adyr A. Moss, David C. Mulligan

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

In addition to efficacious immunosuppression for the benefit of organ transplantation, tacrolimus has diverse actions that result in amelioration of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Knowledge is accumulating rapidly on the mechanisms through which tacrolimus exerts these cytoprotective effects, including alterations in microcirculation, free radical metabolism, calcium-activated pathways, inflammatory cascades, mitochondrial stability, apoptosis, stress-response proteins, and tissue recovery. Within the nucleus, actions mediating the effects of tacrolimus appear to be dominantly influenced by interactions with the transcription factor, nuclear factor-kappaB. Because tacrolimus is a cornerstone agent in immunosuppression regimens throughout the world and knowledge of its cellular mechanisms is evolving, it is important …

Perceptions Of Nebraska School Leaders Toward The Use Of Digital Portfolios In The Teacher Selection Process, Paul Allan Clark Feb 2003

Perceptions Of Nebraska School Leaders Toward The Use Of Digital Portfolios In The Teacher Selection Process, Paul Allan Clark

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to examine Nebraska School administrators' perceptions of digital portfolios in the teacher selection process. The digital portfolio can become another tool that school administrators use to help with the teacher selection process. Before universities or individual students spend a great deal of time and resources in creating and developing a digital portfolio plan, it is important to study the perceptions of the school administrators who may be using the digital portfolio in the teacher selection process. It is important to note whether they perceive a digital portfolio as useful and, if so, what contents …

Indirect Liability For Copyright Infringement: An Economic Perspective, William M. Landes, Douglas Gary Lichtman Feb 2003

Indirect Liability For Copyright Infringement: An Economic Perspective, William M. Landes, Douglas Gary Lichtman

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

When individuals infringe copyright, they often use tools, services, and venues provided by other parties. An enduring legal question asks to what extent those other parties should be held liable for the resulting infringement. For example, should a firm that produces photocopiers be required to compensate authors for any unauthorized copies made on that firm's machines? What about firms that manufacture personal computers or offer Internet access; should they be liable, at least in part, for online music piracy? Modern copyright law addresses these issues through a variety of common law doctrines and statutory provisions. In this essay, we introduce …

Bible A Whole-Air Sampling As A Window On Asian Biogeochemistry, Felisa A. Smith, Scott Elliott, Donald R. Blake, Nikola J. Blake, Manvendra D. Dubey, F. Sherwood Rowland, Barkley C. Sive

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Asian trace gas and aerosol emissions into carbon, nitrogen, and other elemental cycles will figure prominently in near term Earth system evolution. Atmospheric hydrocarbon measurements resolve numerous chemical species and can be used to investigate sourcing for key geocarriers. A recent aircraft study of biomass burning and lightning (BIBLE A) explored the East Asian atmosphere and was unique in centering on the Indonesian archipelago. Samples of volatile organics taken over/between the islands of Japan, Saipan, Java, and Borneo are here examined as a guide to whole-air-based studies of future Asian biogeochemistry. The midlatitude onshore/offshore pulse and tropical convection strongly influence …

Hiv Protease Inhibitors Promote Atherosclerotic Lesion Formation Independent Of Dyslipidemia By Increasing Cd36-Dependent Cholesteryl Ester Accumulation In Macrophages, James Dressman, Jeanie Kincer, Sergey V. Matveev, Ling Guo, Richard N. Greenberg, Theresa Guerin, David Meade, Xiang-An Li, Weifei Zhu, Annette M. Uittenbogaard, Melinda E. Wilson, Eric J. Smart

Physiology Faculty Publications

Protease inhibitors decrease the viral load in HIV patients, however the patients develop hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and atherosclerosis. It has been assumed that protease inhibitor–dependent increases in atherosclerosis are secondary to the dyslipidemia. Incubation of THP-1 cells or human PBMCs with protease inhibitors caused upregulation of CD36 and the accumulation of cholesteryl esters. The use of CD36-blocking antibodies, a CD36 morpholino, and monocytes isolated from CD36 null mice demonstrated that protease inhibitor–induced increases in cholesteryl esters were dependent on CD36 upregulation. These data led to the hypothesis that protease inhibitors induce foam cell formation and consequently atherosclerosis by upregulating CD36 and …

The Oneida County 4-H Conservation Field Days Conflict, Stephen C. Brown, Sarah Vonhof, Alicia Kelley Feb 2003

The Oneida County 4-H Conservation Field Days Conflict, Stephen C. Brown, Sarah Vonhof, Alicia Kelley

Journal of Extension

In its 30-year history, New York's Oneida County 4-H Conservation Education Field Days program generated no known controversy. That trend changed radically when a citizens group shot undercover video footage portraying the event as "children being brainwashed into thinking guns, hunting and trapping are okay." The video aired statewide and resulted in a national controversy. Oneida County 4-H responded by trying to build consensus among the organizations involved, but discovered that this was not possible. This article relates the events that precipitated this conflict, and examines the various perspectives on the conflict held by the three major organizations involved.

Utilization Of Algal And Bacterial Extracellular Polymeric Secretions (Eps) By The Deposit-Feeding Brittlestar Amphipholis Gracillima (Echinodermata), D. L. Hoskins, S. E. Stancyk, Alan W. Decho

Faculty Publications

Like many deposit-feeding organisms, the burrowing brittlestar Amphipholis gracillima feeds on particulate organic matter in surface sediments. Microbial exopolymeric secretions (EPS) are carbohydrate-enriched polymers produced by microalgae and bacteria that bind aggregates and form dense biofilms near the sediment-water interface. EPS are assimilable by some benthic infauna and may be utilized as a significant carbon source. EPS are absorbed by some deposit-feeders, including a holothurian, and may be supplemental sources of nutrition. The burrowing brittlestar A. gracillima is a deposit-feeder that was used in a mass balance approach to model the incorporation of radiolabeled EPS by bottom feeders. Brittlestars were …

Temporal Genetic Variation In A Coyote (Canis Latrans) Population Experiencing High Turnover, Christen Lenney William, Karen Blejwas, John J. Johnston, Michael M. Jaeger

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are mobile, adaptable canids found in a wide range of habitats across North America, with range extensions into previously unoccupied areas in the western and eastern United States. Although long-distance dispersal capabilities in both sexes (Harrison 1992) and relatively large proportions of transient coyotes that do not exhibit fidelity to a single territory (typically 13–34% of a population— Andelt 1985; Windberg and Knowlton 1988) suggest that coyotes exist as a panmictic population, other aspects of coyote behavior may increase the likelihood of local population structure.

Genetic Variation In The Midcontinental Population Of Sandhill Cranes, Grus Canadensis, Jessica L. Petersen, Richard Bischof, Gary L. Krapu, Allen L. Szalanski

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Three subspecies of sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) are recognized in the Midcontinental population, the lesser (Grus c. canadensis), Canadian (G. c. rowani), and greater (G. c. tabida). Blood samples collected on the population’s primary spring staging area in Nebraska, U.S.A., were used to resolve the genetic relationship among these subspecies. Phylogenetic analysis of 27 G. canadensis, by DNA sequencing of a 675 bp region of the mtDNA, supports the subspecies designations of G. c. canadensis and G. c. tabida. G. c. rowani individuals were intermediate with each of the other …

Fuzzy Modeling Of Skin Permeability Coefficients, Angela K. Pannier, Rhonda M. Brand, David D. Jones

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Purpose. The purpose of this work was to determine whether a new modeling methodology using fuzzy logic can predict skin permeability coefficients that are given compound descriptors that have been proven to affect percutaneous penetration.
Methods. Three fuzzy inference models were developed using subtractive clustering to define natural structures within the data and assign subsequent rules. The numeric parameters describing the rules were refined through the use of an Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Inference System implemented in MatLab. Each model was evaluated using the entire data set. Then predicted outputs were compared to the published experimental data.
Results. All databases produced …

Size-Abundance Relationships In An Amazonian Bird Community: Implications For The Energetic Equivalence Rule, Sabrina E. Russo, Scott K. Robinson, John Terborgh Feb 2003

Size-Abundance Relationships In An Amazonian Bird Community: Implications For The Energetic Equivalence Rule, Sabrina E. Russo, Scott K. Robinson, John Terborgh

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

We studied size-abundance relationships in a species-rich Amazonian bird community and found that the slope of the logarithmic relationship between population density and body mass (b= −0.22) is significantly shallower than expected under Damuth’s energetic equivalence rule (EER), which states that population energy use (PEU) is independent of species body mass. We used estimates of avian field metabolic rates to examine the logarithmic relationship between PEU and body mass and its variation among ecological guilds. The relationship for all species had a significantly positive slope (b = 0.46), indicating that PEU of larger species was greater than …
