Detection Of Cracks At Rivet Holes In Thin Plates Using Lamb-Wave Scanning, Roberto A. Osegueda, Vladik Kreinovich, Soheil Nazarian, Enrique Roldan Feb 2003

Detection Of Cracks At Rivet Holes In Thin Plates Using Lamb-Wave Scanning, Roberto A. Osegueda, Vladik Kreinovich, Soheil Nazarian, Enrique Roldan

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This paper describes a Lamb-wave scanning method for the detection of notches simulating cracks at rivet holes in thin plates. The approach requires the generation of an ultrasonic So-Mode Lamb wave using an incident transmitter excited with a tone burst centered at a near non-dispersive frequency. Area scans are performed of a plate with a hole with a notch to generate times series information which is used to create animations illustrating the wave propagation characteristics. The time series are subject to a sifting process to obtain intrinsic mode functions which contain narrow frequency banded information of the signals. The Hilbert-Huang …

A Comprehensive Review Of The Ecological And Human Social Effects Of Artificial Feeding And Baiting Of Wildlife, L. Dunkley, M.R.L. Cattet

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications

In recent years, events within Canada and the United States have drawn attention to potential negative consequences of feeding and baiting wild animals, especially enhanced transmission of infectious diseases such as bovine tuberculosis and chronic wasting disease. This report was prepared to gather available science-based information on the ecological and human social effects of artificial feeding and baiting of wildlife into one readily accessible document. The contracting agencies, Parks Canada and Saskatchewan Environment, recognize that an objective review of existing literature may help to answer questions and concerns within and outside the agencies, and help to guide subsequent decision-making concerning …

Intergovernmental Cooperation, Metropolitan Equity, And The New Regionalism, Laurie Reynolds Feb 2003

Intergovernmental Cooperation, Metropolitan Equity, And The New Regionalism, Laurie Reynolds

Washington Law Review

The economic gap between affluent suburbia and the urban core has recently received widespread attention among state and local government law scholars. Although the underlying normative arguments rest on very different rationales, scholars with a wide range of doctrinal approaches appear to have formed a consensus that the current concentration of wealth and resources in metropolitan areas is unacceptable. Their common goal of reducing regional disparities has made the scholarly dialogue a dispute over how, rather than whether, to achieve a better distribution. For many of what can be described as the "New Regionalist" scholars, voluntary intergovernmental cooperative efforts may …

Habitat Utilization By Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Biscayne Bay, Florida, Christine A. Hudak

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) exhibit variable distribution patterns, depending upon their geographic location. Habitat utilization patterns in Biscayne Bay, Florida, were examined using the Biscayne Bay Bottlenose Dolphin Photo-ID database obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Miami Laboratory. Habitat coverages in Biscayne Bay were obtained from the Atlas of Marine Resources Version 1.3B CD and the Biscayne Bay National Park CD. Dolphin sightings were overlaid on the habitat coverages using GIS Arcview software.

The effects of habitat, season, behavior, zone (sectioned area of Biscayne Bay), and depth on patterns …

Extension Educators’ Supply Of Risk Management Training To Farmers, Oscar Vergara, Steve Martin, Keith H. Coble, George F. Patrick, Thomas O. Knight, Alan E. Baquet

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

This paper primary objective is to analyze the supply of risk management education provided by extension educators to their clients. A survey of county/area extension educators from Mississippi, Texas, Indiana, and Nebraska was conducted during the fall of 2001. A Tobit econometric model was constructed to analyze the extension educators’ supply of risk management training to farmers. Results showed that the number of risk management education training programs held in the past 3 years by extension educators was positively related to the extension educators’ percent of time devoted to agricultural responsibilities, the value of all crops in the extension educator’s …

Stat5a Promotes Adipogenesis In Nonprecursor Cells And Associates With The Glucocorticoid Receptor During Adipocyte Differentiation, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens Feb 2003

Stat5a Promotes Adipogenesis In Nonprecursor Cells And Associates With The Glucocorticoid Receptor During Adipocyte Differentiation, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

The differentiation of adipocytes is regulated by the activity of a variety of transcription factors, including peroxidase proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ and C/EBPα. Our current study demonstrates that ectopic expression of STAT5A, such as that of PPAR-γ and C/EBPα, promotes adipogenesis in two nonprecursor fibroblast cell lines. Using morphologic and biochemical criteria, we have demonstrated that STAT5A and the combination of STAT5A and STAT5B are sufficient to induce the expression of early and late adipogenic markers in BALB/c and NIH-3T3 cells. Yet, the ectopic expression of STAT5B alone does not induce the expression of adipocyte genes, but enhances the induction of …

Methylation-Sensitive Binding Of Transcription Factor Yy1 To An Insulator Sequence Within The Paternally Expressed Imprinted Gene, Peg3, Joomyeong Kim, Angela Kollhoff, Anne Bergmann, Lisa Stubbs Feb 2003

Methylation-Sensitive Binding Of Transcription Factor Yy1 To An Insulator Sequence Within The Paternally Expressed Imprinted Gene, Peg3, Joomyeong Kim, Angela Kollhoff, Anne Bergmann, Lisa Stubbs

Faculty Publications

The 5-ends of two paternally expressed mouse genes, Peg3 and Usp29, are jointly associated with a CpG island that exhibits allele-specific methylation. Sequence comparison of the regions derived from human, mouse and cow revealed the presence of two evolutionarily conserved sequence motifs including one that is repeated multiple times within the first intron of Peg3 in all three mammals. DNA mobility shift and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChlP) assays clearly demonstrated that this motif is an in vivo binding site for the Gli-type transcription factor YY1. The YY1-binding site contains one CpG dinucleotide, and methylation of this CpG site abolishes the binding …

Transcriptional Initiation Under Conditions Of Anoxia-Induced Quiescence In Mitochondria From Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Brian D. Eads, Steven C. Hand Feb 2003

Transcriptional Initiation Under Conditions Of Anoxia-Induced Quiescence In Mitochondria From Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Brian D. Eads, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

In response to anoxia, embryos of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana are able coordinately to downregulate metabolism to levels low enough to permit survival for several years at room temperature. In addition to dramatic decreases in free ATP levels and heat production, intracellular pH drops from 7.8 to 6.3 overnight. Use of isolated mitochondria to study transcriptional responses to anoxia offers several advantages: (1) the localized nature of transcript initiation, processing and degradation, all of which may be followed in organello; (2) the relatively simple cis- and trans-machinery involved and (3) the ability to provide relevant physiological treatments in vitro. …

Localization And Characterization Of Phenamil-Sensitive Na+ Influx In Isolated Rainbow Trout Gill Epithelial Cells, Scott D. Reid, G. S. Hawkings, F. Galvez, G. G. Goss Feb 2003

Localization And Characterization Of Phenamil-Sensitive Na+ Influx In Isolated Rainbow Trout Gill Epithelial Cells, Scott D. Reid, G. S. Hawkings, F. Galvez, G. G. Goss

Faculty Publications

Percoll density-gradient separation, combined with peanut lectin agglutinin (PNA) binding and magnetic bead separation, was used to separate dispersed fish gill cells into sub-populations. Functional characterization of each of the sub-populations was performed to determine which displayed acid-activated phenamil- and bafilomycin-sensitive Na+ uptake. Analysis of the mechanism(s) of 22Na+ influx was performed in control and acid-activated (addition of 10 mmoll-1 proprionic acid) cells using a variety of Na+ transport inhibitors (ouabain, phenamil, HOE-694 and bumetanide) and a V-type ATPase inhibitor (bafilomycin). We found that cells migrating to a 1.03-1.05 g ml-1 Percoll interface [pavement cells (PVCs)] possessed the lowest rates …

Background: Four multicenter Networks (GenNet, GENOA, HyperGEN, SAPPHIRe) form the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Family Blood Pressure Program (FBPP), to search for hypertension/blood pressure (BP) genes. The networks used different family designs and targeted multiple ethnic groups, using standardized protocols and definitions. Linkage genome scans were done on samples within each network (N = 6245 relatives). Methods: The evidence was synthesized using meta-analysis. Results: Combining ethnic groups, no region reached LOD >2, but several small peaks were identified, including chromosome 2p where two other recent reports find hypertension linkage. Conclusions: No regions show uniformly large effects on BP/hypertension …

Energetic Adaptations Along A Broad Latitudinal Gradient: Implications For Widely Distributed Assemblages, James E. Garvey, Dennis R. Devries, Russell A. Wright, Jeffrey G. Miner

Most community-based models in ecology assume that all individuals within a species respond similarly to environmental conditions and thereby exert identical effects as consumers or prey. Rather, individuals differ among systems, with important implications for population demographics and community interactions. For widely distributed assemblages made up of poikilotherms with high first-year mortality, species-specific differences in growth reaction norms as affected by both temperature and genotype will influence biotic interactions. For a broadly distributed fish assemblage, first-year growth does not vary with latitude for a planktivorous prey species, but declines with increasing latitude for a terminal piscivore. Size-based competitive interactions between …

Genetic Variation In The Midcontinental Population Of Sandhill Cranes, Grus Canadensis, Jessica L. Petersen, Richard Bischof, Gary L. Krapu, Allen L. Szalanski Feb 2003

Genetic Variation In The Midcontinental Population Of Sandhill Cranes, Grus Canadensis, Jessica L. Petersen, Richard Bischof, Gary L. Krapu, Allen L. Szalanski

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Three subspecies of sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) are recognized in the Midcontinental population, the lesser (Grus c. canadensis), Canadian (G. c. rowani), and greater (G. c. tabida). Blood samples collected on the population's primary spring staging area in Nebraska, U.S.A., were used to resolve the genetic relationship among these subspecies. Phylogenetic analysis of 27 G. canadensis, by DNA sequencing of a 675 bp region of the mtDNA, supports the subspecies designations of G. c. canadensisand G. c. tabida. G. c. rowani individuals were intermediate with each of the other two …

Interpretation And Institutions, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule Feb 2003

Interpretation And Institutions, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule

Michigan Law Review

Suppose that a statute, enacted several decades ago, bans the introduction of any color additive in food if that additive "causes cancer" in human beings or animals. Suppose that new technologies, able to detect low-level carcinogens, have shown that many potential additives cause cancer, even though the statistical risk is often tiny - akin to the risk of eating two peanuts with governmentally-permitted levels of aflatoxins. Suppose, finally, that a company seeks to introduce a certain color additive into food, acknowledging that the additive causes cancer, but urging that the risk is infinitesimal, and that if the statutory barrier were …

Municipal Storm Water Permitting In California, John H. Minan Feb 2003

Municipal Storm Water Permitting In California, John H. Minan

San Diego Law Review

This Article discusses the regulation of discharges of waste in storm water from municipal separate storm sewer systems and the consequent legal challenges. The author begins by examining the current structure of federal and state regulation of storm water pollution, focusing his analysis on California. Professor Minan then addresses the storm water pollution problem and analyzes the San Diego MS4 permit as an example of the challenges that municipalities face in the permitting process. The author explores the various legal concerns that stem from both state and federal regulation of this area of pollution and provides a framework for understanding …
