Paper Session Ii-A - Navigating The Air: A History Of Flight Before The Wright Brothers, Henry C. Dethloff

Space Congress® Proceedings

When, on June 5 1783, Joseph and Etienne de Montgolfier launched for the first time in public their MACHINE AEROSTATIQUE, an immense enthusiasm took over the whole world. Never, except perhaps with the discovery of America, did any scientific event captured so much the passions of the masses: It seemed that finally MAN had conquered the atmosphere. HE was the master of the air just as much as he was already the master of the Earth and the Sea. Space belonged to him, and for most enthusiasts going to the moon was going to be just a game.

Now a …

Paper Session Ii-A - History Of The Shuttle Landing Facility At Kennedy Space Center, Elaine Liston, Dawn Elliot

Space Congress® Proceedings

When NASA built a new revolutionary spacecraft, the design chosen was a delta-winged orbiter that would liftoff from existing launch pads and land like an airplane. This was a new concept in space travel that radically changed how the United States traveled to low earth orbit. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California were selected as launch sites and Kennedy was also chosen as a landing site. The NASA Administrator, Dr. James C. Fletcher, announced his selection on April 14, 1972. 1 The official name is “Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility”, and the …

Photodynamic Therapy, Ashley Thomas May 2003

Photodynamic Therapy, Ashley Thomas

McCabe Thesis Collection

Photodynamic therapy is a new treatment that is being introduced into the veterinary community. Photodynamic therapy is the use of light activated chemotherapy to kill cancer cells (Dougherty, 1998). It has already been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to be used as a form of cancer treatment in humans, but has not been carried over to the veterinary community. That is until now. Photodynamic therapy is now being tested in the veterinary community in hopes to find the same results that the human medical community has when dealing with certain types of cancer. They also hope to …

Bacteriological Water Quality Of Forested And Pastured Streams Receiving Land-Applied Poultry Litter, Matthew W. Mcbroom, Chang Mingteh, Charles Wells May 2003

Bacteriological Water Quality Of Forested And Pastured Streams Receiving Land-Applied Poultry Litter, Matthew W. Mcbroom, Chang Mingteh, Charles Wells

Faculty Publications

Poultry production is a growing industry in East Texas, generating about 360,000 m tons of broiler litter each year as a by-product for application on pasturelands. Grab samples of fecal coliform (FC) and fecal streptococcus (FS) were collected monthly between March and December 1996 and FC and E-coli samples were collected weekly between July and October 2001 at six sites on the Waffelo and Terrapin Creeks in Nacogdoches County, Texas to assess possible impacts of poultry litter application on bacterial water quality. Sites were grouped by three pairs with each pair consisting of one upstream site in predominantly forested area …
