Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase, with or without a substrate bound in the active site.

Future Development In San Jose’S Coyote Valley, Michelle H. Fisk May 2003

Future Development In San Jose’S Coyote Valley, Michelle H. Fisk

Master's Projects

This Planning Study reviews the city planning procedure that Cisco Systems would need to follow in order to build its proposed campus in the City of San Jose’s North Coyote Valley Campus Industrial Area. It is a controversial subject with both pros and cons, which I will examine throughout this study. Research was conducted using primarily written articles about different viewpoints on this topic, attending community meetings and listening to community members, as well as interviewing City of San Jose Planning Department staff.

An Anesthesia Display For A Space Station: Clinical Validation Of Neuromuscular Blockade Models, Rose Mills, Steve Kern May 2003

An Anesthesia Display For A Space Station: Clinical Validation Of Neuromuscular Blockade Models, Rose Mills, Steve Kern

Utah Space Grant Consortium

An anesthesia drug display that shows the predicted effects of medication may be extremely useful on a space station and in situations where an inexperienced person could be performing experiments on animals or emergency treatments to fellow astronauts. Such a drug display shows drugs given and predicts their effects on the person or animal. In order for such a display to be useful, the predictions must be validated to ensure accuracy of and instill confidence in those who use the display. This study consists of validation of rocuronium which is a drug used for neuromuscular blockade (muscle relaxation). The effects …

Host Defense Mechanisms In The Crayfish: The Effect Of Injection With Live Or Killed Bacteria., Kimberly R. Goins May 2003

Host Defense Mechanisms In The Crayfish: The Effect Of Injection With Live Or Killed Bacteria., Kimberly R. Goins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An increase in attachment of SRBCs to Procambarus clarkii hemocytes has been shown after the crayfish were injected with a live or killed Pseudomonas strain RS2b. The increase in attachment occurred at 8 hours post injection and peaked at 24 hours for both experimental groups. The population of hemocytes with receptors for LPS and mannose also increased at 8 hours post injection and peaked at 24 hours for both experimental groups. At 96 hours post injection the number of receptor bearing hemocytes and hemocytes bound to SRBCs began to decrease to the level of the control for both groups. The …

Characterization Of Sympathetic Ganglion Sensitivity To Substance P In A Genetic And A Non-Genetic Rat Model Of Hypertension., John Daniel Tompkins May 2003

Characterization Of Sympathetic Ganglion Sensitivity To Substance P In A Genetic And A Non-Genetic Rat Model Of Hypertension., John Daniel Tompkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intravenous injection of substance P (SP) stimulates sympathetic ganglia to evoke a greater increase in renal sympathetic nerve activity, heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive than normotensive rats due to upregulation of the NK1 receptor. These experiments were designed to determine the cellular basis for the enhanced ganglionic responsiveness to NK1 agonists in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) in comparison to their normotensive counterparts, Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Studies were also conducted to determine whether the increased ganglion responsiveness to SP in SHR is causally related to the increased BP or is a unique characteristic of this …

Parameter Estimation For A Modified Cable Model Using A Green's Function And Eigenvalue Perturbation., Scott Lewis La Voie May 2003

Parameter Estimation For A Modified Cable Model Using A Green's Function And Eigenvalue Perturbation., Scott Lewis La Voie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we developed the Green's Function for a tapered equivalent cylinder model of dendritic electrical propagation. We then use the Green's Function to develop a Carleman linear embedding scheme which is used to estimate the effects of a nonlinear ion channel hot-spot on the tapered cylinder solution. Mathematica© was used to implement the Carleman embedding scheme.

Nicotine Modulates The Expression Of A Diverse Set Of Genes In The Neuronal Sh-Sy5y Cell Line, Travis Dunckley, Ronald J. Lukas May 2003

Nicotine Modulates The Expression Of A Diverse Set Of Genes In The Neuronal Sh-Sy5y Cell Line, Travis Dunckley, Ronald J. Lukas

Translational Neuroscience

Nicotine exposure can have long lasting effects on nervous system function, some of which must contribute to nicotine dependence. Up-regulation, an increase in numbers of radioligand-binding nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR), occurs on exposure to nicotine at high concentrations. To determine whether altered gene expression might account for long term changes and up-regulation following nicotine exposure, we assessed effects of 1 h of 1 mM nicotine exposure on alter. ation of gene expression in the neuron-like SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma clonal line. Repeat and cross-controlled microarray analyses yielded a list of 17 genes from the initially screened ∼5,000 whose expression was consistently altered …
