Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Maternal Behavior : Neuronal Alterations In The Medial Preoptic Area And Suppression Of Pup Attacks, Lillian Flores Stevens Aug 2003

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Maternal Behavior : Neuronal Alterations In The Medial Preoptic Area And Suppression Of Pup Attacks, Lillian Flores Stevens

Master's Theses

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), by virtue of its relationship to various neurotransmitter systems, hormones, and to estrogen in particular, may play a role in maternal behavior. To explore this possible role, female virgin Sprague Dawley rats received continuous intracerebroventricular infusions ofBDNF sense oligonucleotide and were exposed to pups for maternal behavior testing. Behaviorally, BDNF sense had no effect on maternal behavior but did significantly suppress pup attacks during the first 24 hours of exposure. BDNF had a significant effect on neuronal morphology in the medial preoptic area (mPOA) as well, such that neurons in this region exposed to BDNF had …

Values, Qualifications, Ethics And Legal Standards In Arabic (Islamic) Medicine, Kamel M. Ajlouni

Saudi Medical Journal

Many historians claim that the Western world pioneered in the setting of ethical, legal and professional standards in the practice of medicine. Informed medical consent is proposed by some as an American invention. Others claim that patient rights and legal protection propose have stated in the early decades of the 20th century. This review is an attempt to uncover the facts regarding the way Arabs practiced medicine during the golden era of Islam. Eight hundred to fifteen hundred AD this includes the qualification of physicians according to a well designed curricula covering the science and humanity of medicine. The rules …

Late Embryonic And Fetal Mortality In The Ewe, Alison Brown Dixon Aug 2003

Late Embryonic And Fetal Mortality In The Ewe, Alison Brown Dixon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Timing and factors associated with late embryonic and fetal loss in the ewe were examined with ultrasonography. In study one, pregnancy diagnosis and counts of embryos were conducted on days 25, 45, 65, and/or 85 of gestation and compared to lambs born at term. Preliminary results indicated that more potential offspring were lost during fetal development than during late embryonic development. Approximately 18% of ewes experienced late embryonic and fetal loss and 20% of embryos or fetuses were lost from day 25 to term. Losses of potential offspring were continuous throughout gestation and approximately 3% of embryos present on day …

Bone Fracture Toughness Of Estrogen Deficient Rabbits, Matthew S. Smith Aug 2003

Bone Fracture Toughness Of Estrogen Deficient Rabbits, Matthew S. Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bone mass is commonly used as an indicator of fracture risk. It has been shown in numerous studies that bone loss causes increased bone fragility and risk of fracture. It has also been shown that 50% of patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures have the same bone mass as normal age matched controls. Thus, bone mass alone is not the only indicator of bone quality and ability to resist fracture.;The objective of this study was to qualitatively assess bone's mechanical and histomorphometric changes with drug treatment, and estrogen deficiency, using fracture toughness, femoral neck fracture and histomorphometric analysis in an …

Field Observations Of Intraspecific Agonistic Behavior Of Two Crayfish Species, Orconectes Rusticus And Orconectes Virilis, In Different Habitats, Daniel A. Bergman, Paul A. Moore

Peer Reviewed Articles

Agonistic behavior is a fundamental aspect of ecological theories on resource acquisition and sexual selection.

Crustaceans are exemplary models for agonistic behavior within the laboratory, but agonistic behavior in natural habitats is often neglected. Laboratory studies do not achieve the same ecological realism as field studies. In an attempt to connect laboratory results to field data and investigate how habitat structure affects agonistic interactions, the nocturnal behavior of two crayfish species was observed by scuba diving and snorkeling in two northern Michigan lakes. Intraspecific agonistic interactions were analyzed in three habitats: two food resources—macrophytes and detritus—and one sheltered habitat. The …

Nutrient Stoichiometry In Algal Responses To Multiple Stressors In Experimental Agricultural Wetlands, William Robert White Aug 2003

Nutrient Stoichiometry In Algal Responses To Multiple Stressors In Experimental Agricultural Wetlands, William Robert White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was part of an EPA-funded experimental investigation of multiple stressor effects on agricultural wetlands. A 27-1 center point enhanced fractional factorial design was applied to 72 wetland mesocosms to examine 7 main effects and 21 two-way interaction effects (Montgomery 1997). Treatments included the agrichemicals monosodium methane arsenate (MSMA), chlorpyrifos and atrazine, inorganic nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon), the fathead minnow, suspended sediments (kaolinite), and UV radiation. Dissolved, suspended (sestonic), and periphyton C, N, and P, along with C:P, C:N, and N:P in each fraction were measured 2, 12, 24 and 48 days after treatments were added to the …

B.R. Wells Rice Research Studies 2002, R. J. Norman, J.-F. Meullenet

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Arkansas is the leading rice producing state in the U .S .. representing almost 46% of the total U .S. production and almost 47% of the total acres planted to rice . Rice cultural practices vary across the state and across the U.S. However, due to changing political, environmental, and economic times, the practices arc dynamic. This survey was initiated in 2002 to monitor how the changing times reflect the changes in the way Arkansas rice producers approach their livelihood. The survey was conducted by polling county Extension agents in each of the counties in Arkansas that produce rice. Questions …

Designing Sustainable Communities And Creating A Sense Of Community: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of One Organization's Vision Of The Future, James L. Leighter Aug 2003

Designing Sustainable Communities And Creating A Sense Of Community: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of One Organization's Vision Of The Future, James L. Leighter

Student Work

The purpose of this study is to examine a discourse of sustainability. Proponents of particular environmental and development practices use the term sustainability in a variety of contexts in order to signify a variety of preferred states for the planet, and descriptions of a relationship between natural and man-made environments. I argue that this term should be studied in places where people are talking about, promoting, teaching and negotiating its meaning. Because sustainability discourse is ultimately concerned with places and times that are removed from the immediacy of the present, Fantasy Theme Analysis (FTA) is an ideal methodology for studying …

Coronary Artery Disease And Noncardiac Surgery: Considerations In Anesthesia Nursing, Michelle L. Maund Aug 2003

Coronary Artery Disease And Noncardiac Surgery: Considerations In Anesthesia Nursing, Michelle L. Maund

Theses and Dissertations

The issue addressed in this paper was the concept of patients with coronary artery disease going for non-cardiac surgery, including anesthesia considerations during surgery. The exploration of anesthesia considerations in patients with a history of coronary artery disease is important, because the nurse anesthetist needs to: a) be aware of the incidence of coronary artery disease, b) be knowledgeable regarding the pathophysiology involved in coronary artery disease to assist in prompt diagnosis and treatment of ischemia, c) plan and carry out an appropriate anesthetic plan during surgery, d) be knowledgeable in the treatment of a patient who suffers a myocardial …

Phylogeography And Population Structure Of The Prairie Skink (Eumeces Septentrionalis), Gregory S. Fuerst

Theses and Dissertations

The geographical and geneological limits of species are firmly rooted in historical and current processes. Phylogenetic studies focus on the historical aspect and examine character states to estimate ancestor-descendent relationships. The number of described species in the world has been estimated at 1.4 to 1.8 million and other estimates suggest that as many as 30 million species may exist (May, 1990; Wilson, 1992). Phylogenetic studies provide the information needed to delimit and classify these species based on their historical relationships. Studies on species population structure focus on the current and historical processes acting on a species. These studies use a …

Nicotine Effects On Attention: Implications For Adhd Therapy, Dmitri V. Poltavksi Aug 2003

Nicotine Effects On Attention: Implications For Adhd Therapy, Dmitri V. Poltavksi

Theses and Dissertations

A self-medication theoiy of substance abuse has been proposed to account for high prevalence of cigarette smoking in adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It has been suggested that in smokers with ADHD nicotine might attenuate some of the symptoms of the disorder, especially inattentiveness. Animal research and human studies using non-ADHD smokers and non-smokers have produced mixed evidence on the cognitive effects of nicotine with the most consistent finding of improved sustained attention in a variety of vigilance tasks. Few existing studies examining the effects of nicotine in ADHD adults have provided further support to the hypothesis of ameliorating …

Self-Assessed Dakota Language Fluency And Suggested Strategies For Language Revitalization On The Spirit Lake Nation, Ruth Ellen De Larios Aug 2003

Self-Assessed Dakota Language Fluency And Suggested Strategies For Language Revitalization On The Spirit Lake Nation, Ruth Ellen De Larios

Theses and Dissertations

This study provides a background of the status of the Dakota language as it is spoken on the Spirit Lake Nation in northeast North Dakota. The study examined Dakota language fluency, environments where the language is used, and suggested strategies for revitalization. In order to determine the aforementioned, a brief Survey for Grant for Revitalization of Tribal Languages (Survey) was implemented. This assessment of community fluency and interest was essential to obtaining an Administration for Native Americans grant to develop a language revitalization effort that came to be known as the Dakota la UnspepHLanguage Preservation Program.

The Survey for Grant …

The Rise And Fall Of Programmed Instruction: Informing Instructional Technologists Through A Study Of The Past, Jason K. Mcdonald Aug 2003

The Rise And Fall Of Programmed Instruction: Informing Instructional Technologists Through A Study Of The Past, Jason K. Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

Instructional technologists have recently been called upon to examine the assumptions they hold about teaching and learning, and to consider how those assumptions can affect their practice of the discipline. This thesis is an examination of how the assumptions instructional technologists hold can result in instructional materials that do not accomplish the original goals the developers set out to achieve. I explored this issue by examining the case study of programmed instruction, an educational movement from the mid-20th century that promised to revolutionize education but never lived up to its potential. Programmed instruction was heavily influenced by the assumptions of …

Banning Bans On New Reproductive And Novel Genetic Technologies, Matthew Herder Aug 2003

Banning Bans On New Reproductive And Novel Genetic Technologies, Matthew Herder

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Commentators argue that statutory prohibitions with the force of the criminal law should not be used to regulate new reproductive technologies (NRTs) and novel genetic technologies (NGTs). Bill C-13, the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, however, codifies 10 criminal bans. This paper considers the merits of the various arguments levied against Bill C-13, and the corollary claim that only a "non-prohibitive" model of legislation befits NRTs and NGTs. Three types of arguments are used to critique criminal bans: (1) "Structural" arguments hinge on the constraints of the Canadian legal system - legislation complete with prohibitions runs afoul of the Constitution Act …

Volunteerism, Community Service, And Service-Learning By Ohio 4-Hers In Grades 4-12, R Dale Safrit, Allen W. Auck Aug 2003

Volunteerism, Community Service, And Service-Learning By Ohio 4-Hers In Grades 4-12, R Dale Safrit, Allen W. Auck

Journal of Extension

This study reported here investigated volunteer service by Ohio 4-H'ers ages 10 to 19. The study's population was randomly sampled by each age category: 66,345 4-H community club members ages 10-14 and 18,233 ages 15-19. Study findings suggest that nearly 100% of 4-H'ers in both age categories are involved in community service. Respondents spent an equal amount of time volunteering through school, out of school, on their own, or through 4-H youth development experiences. The researchers conclude that 4-H youth development has an impact on 4-H'ers performing service but that it is not the only way members are helping others.
