The Relationship Of Military Aircraft Activity To Raptors In Central Labrador, Dawn K. Laing, David M. Bird, Tony E. Chubbs, Maj. Gary Humphries Aug 2003

The Relationship Of Military Aircraft Activity To Raptors In Central Labrador, Dawn K. Laing, David M. Bird, Tony E. Chubbs, Maj. Gary Humphries

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 5th (2003)

Central Labrador is a notable breeding area for Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and Bald Eagles (Haliaetus leucocephalus). It is also the location of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) Low level Training Area (LLTA) for fighter aircraft, covering an area of approximately 130,000 km2 over Labrador and north-eastern Québec. Currently, military aircraft based in Goose Bay, Labrador annually conduct 5,000-7,000 sorties and are permitted to conduct up to 18,000 per flying season (DND 1995). The interaction between the two is frequently fatal for the bird and potentially so for the aircraft and pilot. Since the early 1990s, the Department of National …

Gis And Wildlife Management Activities At Airports, Shelley Gray Aug 2003

Gis And Wildlife Management Activities At Airports, Shelley Gray

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 5th (2003)

Wildlife observations collected over time at a US Air Force Base (AFB) have been visually displayed through Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. By continuing to expand upon the capabilities of GIS, USDA Wildlife Services has been able to manage the Seymour Johnson AFB airfield and surrounding areas in a practical manner. A Wildlife Hazard Assessment of the AFB used GIS to clearly display the location of birds and mammals observed on the airfield. Baseline themes of natural features (i.e. rivers, woodlands, etc.) were related to wildlife observations to determine areas requiring management. Additionally, GIS has been a useful tool to …

Indigenized Self: A Healing Journey, Masak Dixie Dayo

Rural Development

'Indigenized Self: A Healing Journey' is a major segment of my personal life story. I have not revealed every detail of my life story as I have not dealt with all aspects of my healing and some remain too painful to write about or discuss in such public detail. However, this is a detailed account of many traumatic and wonderful events in my life that have lead up to my embarking on a healing journey. I explore the history of education in Alaska as it was introduced to Alaska Natives. I try to comprehend why my Inupiaq mother never taught …

Experimental Study Of Solid Deposition And Vapor Pressure In Gas-To-Liquid And Crude Oil Mixtures For Trasportation Through The Trans Alaska Pipeline System, Samuel Uche Amadi Aug 2003

Experimental Study Of Solid Deposition And Vapor Pressure In Gas-To-Liquid And Crude Oil Mixtures For Trasportation Through The Trans Alaska Pipeline System, Samuel Uche Amadi

Engineering

Chemical conversion of Alaska North Slope (ANS) gas to liquid and subsequently transporting it through the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) is a means of bringing the ANS gas to the market. However, transporting the gas-to-liquid (GTL) product with ANS crude oil through the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) may pose some operational challenges. The major issue of concern relates to the asphaltene and wax deposition problems in the pipeline, as well as the vapor pressure of GTL and GTL/crude oil blends. In this study, experiments were carried out to determine the degree to which GTL is a flocculant of …

Acute Exposures Of Salmonid Embryos To Total Dissolved Solids, Barbi Jean Failor-Rounds Aug 2003

Acute Exposures Of Salmonid Embryos To Total Dissolved Solids, Barbi Jean Failor-Rounds

Fisheries

Two exposure methodologies are described here utilizing embryonic and juvenile life stages of several species of salmonids. Specific life stages of the fish were exposed to solutions of varying total dissolved solids (TDS) modeled after the measured produced water from the Red Dog Mine in Kotzebue, Alaska. Embryonic and juvenile coho salmon (0. kisutch) were exposed for 96 hours to determine acute response to TDS. Following exposure, fish were grown out to button up to assess delayed effects. Results from the 96-hour study suggest fertilization is the most sensitive developmental stage of salmon exposed to TDS. Six fish species were …

Chemosensory Responses And Foraging Behavior Of Pycnopodia Helianthoides: Predator Or Scavenger?, Reid Brewer Aug 2003

Chemosensory Responses And Foraging Behavior Of Pycnopodia Helianthoides: Predator Or Scavenger?, Reid Brewer

Marine Biology

Chemical cues released by damaged or dead organisms can affect how and where benthic scavengers feed, whether damage or mortality is natural or fishery-related. These cues may also cause predators to act as facultative scavengers. Experiments were performed to determine the role that the seastar Pycnopodia helianthoides plays in the presence of scavengable prey. The results of these experiments suggest that P. helianthoides preferentially scavenge in lieu of its normal predatory role. When given a choice, P. helianthoides choose damaged or decaying food over live prey even when live prey is encountered en route to the damaged animal. The densities …

Reproductive Decisions By Black Brant: Mechanisms To Synchronize Hatch And Spatial Variation In Growth Rates Of Goslings, Christopher Andrew Nicolai Aug 2003

Reproductive Decisions By Black Brant: Mechanisms To Synchronize Hatch And Spatial Variation In Growth Rates Of Goslings, Christopher Andrew Nicolai

Biological Sciences

I investigated two aspects of reproductive decisions in Black Brant: synchronous hatch within clutches and areas in which to rear their broods. It has been hypothesized that Anatidae facilitate a synchronous hatch through vocalizations among embryos within the same clutch. I performed manipulative experiments in which variation was controlled for both genetic and incubation pattern sources in incubation period length. Our results suggest that vocalizations are not responsible for a synchronous hatch, and I suggest that inherent properties of the eggs themselves are responsible for a synchronous hatch. Additionally, I compared gosling growth rates from areas of low nest densities …

Saami Activism In The United Nations: An Analysis Of Effectiveness Internationally And At Home, Christian Jakob Hicks Aug 2003

Saami Activism In The United Nations: An Analysis Of Effectiveness Internationally And At Home, Christian Jakob Hicks

Arctic and Northern Studies

The Saami of Norway, Sweden, and Finland have been politically active internationally since the 1960s and 1970s. In the last fifteen years their presence has been a major force in indigenous politics and human rights. They have interacted with other indigenous groups, and in numerous national and international political arenas. The motivation for this study is based on the desire to understand the role of Nordic Saami actors in the rapidly changing world of international indigenous politics and how international indigenous politics influences national politics. This study is important to understanding not only Saami politics but also indigenous politics in …

Abundance And Feeding Ecology Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaengliae) In Kodiak, Alaska, Briana Harmony Witteveen Aug 2003

Abundance And Feeding Ecology Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaengliae) In Kodiak, Alaska, Briana Harmony Witteveen

Fisheries

A feeding aggregation of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Kodiak Island region has received little previous study. A mark-recapture experiment was conducted in 2001 and 2002 to estimate its abundance. Historical abundance was back-calculated from this estimate, whaling records, and suspected survival and productivity values within a population model. The current population was estimated at 157 whales and the pre-whaling population at 343 whales. Prey consumption by humpback whales was modeled using three methods for two hypothetical diets based on prey availability surveys conducted within the study area and stomach contents of commercially caught whales. By assuming current consumption …

Counting Seals: Estimating The Unseen Fraction Using A Covariate And Capture-Recapture Model, John R. Moran Aug 2003

Counting Seals: Estimating The Unseen Fraction Using A Covariate And Capture-Recapture Model, John R. Moran

Fisheries

We evaluated the influences of environmental covariates on the proportion of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi) ashore on Tugidak Island using a series of photographic capture-recapture experiments and ground based counts. We used general linear models to examine the significance of combinations of covariates including quadratics terms. Time of day, tide height, rate of tide change, surf, and wind speed significantly influenced the number of seals ashore during the molting period. The model including all significant covariates best explained the probability of seals being hauled out. We observed a decline in the local population using the haulout suggesting that seasonal …

Seasonal Distribution Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus) In Relation To High-Quality Ephemeral Prey Species In Southeastern Alaska, Jamie Neil Womble Aug 2003

Seasonal Distribution Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus) In Relation To High-Quality Ephemeral Prey Species In Southeastern Alaska, Jamie Neil Womble

Fisheries

Energetic demands are high for sea lions during spring when females are pregnant and lactating and males are preparing for extended fasting during the breeding season. Therefore, I predicted that the distribution of sea lions in spring would be influenced by the distribution of spring-spawning aggregations of high-energy Pacific herring (Clupeapallasii) and eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) in southeastern Alaska. Monthly aerial surveys at 23 Steller sea lions haul outs revealed that haulout use was seasonally dynamic. Some sea lion haulouts were only occupied during spring. Other haulouts exhibited pronounced increases in the number of sea lions during certain seasons. Sea lion …

Advances In Satellite Radiometry For The Surveillance Of Surface Temperatures, Ocean Eddies And Upwelling Processes In The Gulf Of Mexico Using Goes-8 Measurements During Summer, Nan Walker, Soe Myint, Adele Babin, Alaric Haag

Faculty Publications

GOES-8 satellite infrared (IR) measurements have been under-utilized in oceanographic research, although they provide several advantages over measurements from other sensors such as the NOAA AVHRR. Frequent coverage (48 times/day) over large regions, low noise in the mid- IR channel, and sole use of nighttime data have enabled the development of improved techniques for producing "de-clouded" images and calculating accurate SSTs (with RMS errors < 0.5°C), over cloudy and humid regions such as the Gulf of Mexico. Animations of SST composite images reveal movements of the Loop Current, its frontal eddies and coastal upwelling even during summer months. GOES-12 and future GOES imagers for the next decade are missing the 12 μm channel; however, this study demonstrates that the mid-IR channel is even more useful than previously thought.

Development And Evolution Of The Amniote Integument: Current Landscape And Future Horizon, Cheng Ming Chuong, Dominique G. Homberger Aug 2003

Development And Evolution Of The Amniote Integument: Current Landscape And Future Horizon, Cheng Ming Chuong, Dominique G. Homberger

Faculty Publications

This special issue on the development and evolution of the amniote integument begins with a discussion of the adaptations to terrestrial conditions, the acquisition of water-impermeability by the reptilian integument, and the initial formation of filamentous integumentary appendages that pave the way towards avian flight. Recent feather fossils are reviewed and a definition of feathers is developed. Hierarchical models are proposed for the formation of complex structures, such as feathers. Molecular signals that alter the phenotype of integumentary appendages at different levels of the hierarchy are presented. Tissue interactions and the roles of keratins in evolution are discussed and linked …

Metabolic Responses Of Shorebird Chicks To Cold Stress: Hysteresis Of Cooling And Warming Phases, Robert Ricklefs, Joseph Williams Aug 2003

Metabolic Responses Of Shorebird Chicks To Cold Stress: Hysteresis Of Cooling And Warming Phases, Robert Ricklefs, Joseph Williams

Biology Department Faculty Works

We developed a protocol for determining the maximum rate of oxygen consumption of shorebird chicks (Scolopacidae and Charadriidae) in response to cold challenge. We first subjected the chicks to gradually decreasing temperatures until their metabolism peaked and began to decrease. We ended the cooling phase of a trial when a chick’s body temperature Tb had declined typically to 32–34°C. After this point, we gradually increased the temperature in the metabolism chamber until normal Tb values and thermoneutral resting metabolism were restored. We refer to this cycle as the down–up (DU) protocol. We estimated instantaneous oxygen consumption (V . O∑) using …

Hot Issues And Cool Rules, Bradley Lubben Aug 2003

Hot Issues And Cool Rules, Bradley Lubben

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

When President Bush signed the Farm Bill on May 13, 2002, much of the focus was on the new commodity and conservation programs and how they had changed relative to the 1996 Farm Bill. However, near the end of the Farm Bill was some language that has become one of the most contentious issues today.

Title X, Section 10816 of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (2002 Farm Bill) addressed country-of-origin labeling (COOL) rules for beef, lamb, pork, fish, fruits, vegetables, and peanuts. The legislation called for voluntary guidelines to be implemented no later than September 30, …

Characteristics Of Phototrophic And Non-Phototrophic Lagoons For Swine Manure, Tongtong Chen, Dennis D. Schulte, Richard K. Koelsch, Anne M. Parkhurst Aug 2003

Characteristics Of Phototrophic And Non-Phototrophic Lagoons For Swine Manure, Tongtong Chen, Dennis D. Schulte, Richard K. Koelsch, Anne M. Parkhurst

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Odors are a major result of inadequately sized and mismanaged anaerobic lagoons. However, purple or pink colored lagoons, indicating the presence of phototrophic purple bacteria, are less likely to be an odor nuisance than are non–purple lagoons. Eight swine lagoons were studied to quantify critical parameters thought to allow purple lagoons to be a more reliable odor control alternative. Bacteriochlorophyll a (Bchl a), which indirectly measures the abundance of phototrophic bacteria, was greater in purple lagoons than in non–purple lagoons (P = 0.01). Oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) was less negative for purple lagoons than for non–purple lagoons in both spring …

Seek And Ye Shall Find, Vivian Mcalister

The United States has relaxed its ban on the importation of Canadian meat cuts from cattle less than 30 months of age. Mexico, too, is reopening its borders to Canadian beef. The principal argument Canada has used to reassure its trading partners is that only one older cow, and none of the 2,700 animals with which that cow came into contact, tested positive for mad-cow disease. Meanwhile, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has detailed measures it is taking to prevent mad-cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, "from entering Canada." Surveillance and testing of animals has been increased. But it's folly to try …

Hatch–Waxman Reform And Accelerated Market Entry Of Generic Drugs: Is Faster Necessarily Better?, Sarah E. Eurek Aug 2003

Hatch–Waxman Reform And Accelerated Market Entry Of Generic Drugs: Is Faster Necessarily Better?, Sarah E. Eurek

Duke Law & Technology Review

Recently there has been a considerable amount of pressure to accelerate consumer access to generic drugs, which are significantly less expensive than their brand-name counterparts. One way to bring generic drugs on to the market sooner is through revision of the existing law relating to pharmaceutical patents. This iBrief describes recent regulatory changes to the Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act (the Hatch-Waxman Act), which governs the patenting process for new drug products, as well as current legislative efforts to speed generic access through Hatch-Waxman reform. This iBrief also assesses whether these changes will be beneficial to consumers …
