Distributed Algorithms For Guiding Navigation Across A Sensor Network, Qun Li, Michael Derosa, Daniela Rus

We develop distributed algorithms for self-reconfiguring sensor networks that respond to directing a target through a region. The sensor network models the danger levels sensed across its area and has the ability to adapt to changes. It represents the dangerous areas as obstacles. A protocol that combines the artificial potential field of the sensors with the goal location for the moving object guides the object incrementally across the network to the goal, while maintaining the safest distance to the danger areas. We report on hardware experiments using a physical sensor network consisting of Mote sensors.

Radial basis function (RBF) neural networks provide attractive possibilities for solving signal processing and pattern classification problems. Several algorithms have been proposed for choosing the RBF prototypes and training the network. The selection of the RBF prototypes and the network weights can be viewed as a system identification problem. As such, this paper proposes the use of the extended Kalman filter for the learning procedure. After the user chooses how many prototypes to include in the network, the Kalman filter simultaneously solves for the prototype vectors and the weight matrix. The Market Value Of Reducing Cancer Risk: Hedonic Housing Prices With Changing Information, W. Kip Viscusi, Ted Gayer, James T. Hamilton

In this paper, we use housing price changes occurring after the release of a regulatory agency's environmental risk information to estimate the value people place on cancer risk reduction. Using a large original data set on the repeat sales of houses, matched with detailed data on hazardous waste cancer risk and newspaper publicity, we find that housing prices respond in a rational manner to changes in information about risk. Since the new information indicated that the sites in our sample pose relatively low cancer risk, the informational release led residents to lower their risk beliefs, resulting in an average housing …

在文學創作之中，情欲與政治二者常會構成一種奇怪的論述關係。如果把情欲書寫與政治表現放在香港這個西方最後的殖民城市之中討論，可能會是一個複雜有趣的題目。在論文中，我們主要分析了施叔青、李碧華與黃碧雲三位作家在小說中的情欲書寫與政治論述的相互關係，並嘗試在她們的作品中找尋一些政治無意識的信息。三位作家在小說中的情欲書寫都有較突出的表現，並備受評論家和讀者 關注，而且她們的小說體現了香港小說中不同時期和不同方向的情欲書寫之路。 追跡她們的情欲書寫之路，同時也可能在追跡香港這個被殖民城市幾段文化心態的變遷軌跡。在此，情欲有兩個意義：一是小說中有關情欲的書寫，以及其所衍生出來的意義；二是主體／作者／香港人對香港這身份矛盾的殖民城市的特殊情感。

論文共分五章。第一章是緒論，主要介紹論文的研究題目與研究範圍，並考察了香港小說中情欲書寫與政治論述的兩個先例──張愛玲的《秧歌》和《赤地之戀》。第二章主要討論施叔青的小說，她小說中情愛故事的男女主人公多是來自不同地方的「外來者」，加上她本身「外來作家」的身份，遂成為一個特別的論述現象。第三章主要討論李碧華的小說創作，她是一位流行的言情小說作家， 許多時所謂「政治」在她的作品中都成了一種「道具」或「賣點」，但是隱藏在她作品下的大眾政治意識卻吸引了我們的注意。第四章主要討論黃碧雲的作品， 她的小說在談情講愛之餘，總不乏血腥、瘋狂、暴力或死亡的場面。不過我們在研究中注意到的是，她的愛情和死亡與「九七」回歸往往是一氣相通的。第五章為總結與檢討。

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Vector Plasmid Dna Elicits An Antitumor Effect, L. Heller, D. Coppola

In vivo electroporation is an efficient means of increasing plasmid DNA delivery to normal tissues, such as skin and muscle, as well as directly to tumors. In the experiments described here, plasmid DNA was delivered by in vivo electroporation to B16 mouse melanomas using two very different pulsing protocols. Reporter expression increased 21- or 42-fold, respectively with electroporation over injection alone. The growth of experimental melanomas with an approximate diameter of 4 mm on the day of treatment was monitored after electroporation delivery of reporter plasmid DNA. 本論文研究中國大陸的金融中介体 (包括銀行和股票市場) 与經濟增長相關性。所用數据是從1994 年到2001 年的季度時間序列數据。作者對各個時間序列數据都考慮了季節因素的影響并進行了穩定性檢驗。

回歸分析結果發現,從長期來看, 金融深度 (DEPTH) 和經濟增長有顯著的正相關關系, 國有商業銀行相對与銀行体系的規模的比例和經濟增長有不顯著的關系。這表明銀行的發展對經濟的增長是有促進作用。同時, 股票市場的相對于經濟總量的規模和經濟發展有顯著的正相關關系, 但是股票市場的流動性和經濟增長有不顯著的關系。這個表明中國大陸的股票市場從長遠來看其發展會促進經濟發展, 但是其流動性對經濟發展的作用並不大。

為了研究金融中介和經濟發展的短期關系, 本論文運用誤差校正模型來檢驗金融中介和經濟發展的相關性。結果表明衡量股票市場規模的變量CAPITALIZATION 和經濟 增長有顯著的負相關關系。這表明中國股票市場存在巨大的 “ 泡沫”, 大量的投机和其它不良的行為。對此, 政府應該重視和加強對股票市場的監控, 對一級市場的上市審批和二級市場的交易買賣都要進行引導, 使股票市場真正成為企業融資的好渠道。

中華人民共和國自建國以來，就是以馬列主義、毛澤東思想為指導理論 的意識形態國家，然而意識形態不是任何時候都左右了中國的外交戰略的。 當意識形態在中國的內政、外交上處於主導位置時，通常不會出現務實 的外交戰略。但是當國家陷於政權的生存、鞏固和安全的危機時，就會出現例 外。

當國家總體戰略是以經濟建設為中心，強調發展經濟，意識形態相對淡化時，務實外交戰略就大行其道。

就中國的務實外交戰略的本質而言，中國本國的國家利益仍然是指導中 國外交戰略的最高原則，其務實的本質與國際政治學理論中的實在主義並無根本的不同。然而，毛澤東時代與鄧小平時代實行務實外交戰略是有不同的，前者僅是外交戰略中的例外，後者則是常規，而非例外。

不論在毛澤東時代還是在鄧小平時代，務實外交戰略在特定的時代背景下都得到了淋漓盡致的展現。前者為中國鞏固新生政權和化解國家安全危機起 到了根本性的作用。後者?中國的社會主義現代化建設爭取了二十多年的和平環境，使中國的經濟得以維持了二十多年的持續高速增長，使中華民族的偉大復興出現了曙光。

On January 7, 1899, Joseph F. Smith, then a Counselor to Church President Lorenzo Snow, left Salt Lake City to visit the Church's plantation in Laie, Hawaii. The main purpose for this trip to Hawaii was to benefit the health of President Smith's wife Sarah Ellen Richards Smith, who had just passed through a "very severe illness." They were accompanied by two of his daughters, Minerva and Alice. President Smith's "loyal friend and former missionary companion" Albert W. Topic: The concept of comfort, although used frequently and throughout the nursing literature, has not been clearly or consistently defined. Purpose: To clarify the meaning of comfort by employing the systematic approach of an evolutionary concept-analysis method. Sources: Books, journals, professional organization position statements, electronic searches. Conclusions: A clear definition and meaning of comfort is needed, and thus the ability to use this concept empirically in order to further nursing knowledge development.

Seismic Cycle And Rheological Effects On Estimation Of Present-Day Slip Rates For The Agua Blanca And San Miguel-Vallecitos Faults, Northern Baja California, Mexico, Timothy H. Dixon, J. Decaix, F. Farina, K. Furlong, Rocco Malservisi

Geodesy can be used to infer long‐term fault slip rates, assuming a model for crust and upper mantle rheology. We examine the sensitivity of fault slip rate estimates to assumed rheology for the Agua Blanca and San Miguel‐Vallecitos faults in northern Baja California, Mexico, part of the Pacific–North America plate boundary zone. The Agua Blanca fault is seismically quiet, but offset alluvial fans indicate young activity. Current seismicity is confined to the nearby San Miguel‐Vallecitos fault, a small offset fault better aligned with plate motion. GPS measurements between 1993 and 1998 suggest that both faults are active, with a combined …

The Explorer region offshore western Canada is a tectonically complex area surrounded by the Pacific, North America, and Juan de Fuca plates. Existing tectonic models for the region differ fundamentally. Proposed plate configurations range from multiple independent plate fragments to an Explorer plate now fused to North America along the continental margin and cut by Pacific–North America transform faults in the west. We present new seismological data constraining the region's current tectonics. We use three-component regional waveforms to determine the source parameters of 84 earthquakes with magnitude greater than 4. Nearly one hundred thousand Latter-day Saints made the journey across the Atlantic during the nineteenth century. Both contemporary commentators and Mormon historians alike have described these ocean crossings extensively. Yet the journey from Liverpool to America was but one segment in the much longer gathering process for over twenty-four thousand Scandinavian Mormons who migrated to Utah during this period. Scandinavians represented the second-largest ethnic group of Saints gathering to Zion between 1852 and 1894. During these years, nearly two hundred vessels carrying Latter-day Saints (fig. 1) left Scandinavia bound for Hull, an important port on the east coast of England. …

If s is a nonzero element of S, then we explore problems related to the computation of η(s), which represents the number of distinct irreducible factorizations of s∈S. In particular, if S is a saturated submonoid of N^d, then we provide an algorithm for computing the positive integer r(s) for which
