Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Objective: To compare the morbidity and outcome of low birthweight babies (birthweight < 2000gm) of adolescent (age < 20 years) and older mothers.
Design: Cross sectional descriptive study.
Setting: The newborn Unit of the Kenyatta National Hospital. Main outcome measures: All babies weighing less than 2000gm at birth whose mothers consented to the study had their gestational age verified using the Dubowitz scoring system. Application Of Systems Engineering Principles And Methods To An Advanced Technology Research Project, Robert William Peak
Application Of Systems Engineering Principles And Methods To An Advanced Technology Research Project, Robert William Peak
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This thesis is a case study of the tailored application of modern systems engineering principles and methods to a joint sponsored research and development program. The Small Aircraft Transportation System program is a $100M class, 4 year proof-of-concept research and demonstration program jointly sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and a consortium of industry, universities, research institutes, and state and local aviation authorities. Its goals are to show that the introduction of emerging airborne and ground technologies and procedures in personal and business aircraft and at small, underutilized airports, can facilitate and …

This article reviews the essential findings of studies of variations in quality of care according to three categories of care: effective care, preference-sensitive care, and supply-sensitive care. It argues that malpractice liability and informed consent laws should be based on standards of practice that are appropriate to each category of care. In the case of effective care, the legal standard should be that virtually all of those in need should receive the treatment, whether or not it is currently customary to provide it. In the case of preference-sensitive care, the law should recognize the failure of the doctrine of informed …

A great deal of controversy, catcalling, and consternation has greeted the rankings of law schools by U.S. News and World Report each spring. In their efforts to place higher in these rankings, law schools have engaged in massive public relations wars, misrepresented data, and done other bad and stupid things.

Community Benchmarks Program
This report evaluates the Web sites of municipalities in Onondaga County. The Community Benchmarks Program (CBP) revisited a study conducted in 1999 that assessed municipal Web sites in the county. The goal of this study is to report the changes that have taken place since the last research project was conducted, given society’s increased reliance on technology

Thalidomide Prevents Donor Corneal Graft Neovascularization In An Alkali Burn Model Of Corneal Angiogenesis, A. Abbas, Aga Hassan Feroze, G. F. Hyman, B. Khan
Section of Ophthalmology
Objective: Thalidomide is a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis. We evaluated the effects of Thalidomide on corneal angiogenesis and on tissue survival of grafts in rabbit eyes with pre-existing neovascularization secondary to alkali burn.
Methods: Sixteen rabbits received alkali burns to one cornea. One month post-injury, assessments of corneal neovascularization were performed followed by corneal transplantation. Four rabbits received oral Thalidomide and ten got placebo (powdered sugar) for thirty days. Total corneal neovascularization (NV), clock hours (CH) involved in (NV), longest (NV) pedicle length (NVP) and the duration of time required for NV to develop were assessed.
Results: Thalidomide significantly decreased …

Many fishes that swim with the paired pectoral fins use fin-stroke parameters that produce thrust force from lift in a mechanism of underwater flight. These locomotor mechanisms are of interest to behavioral biologists, biomechanics researchers and engineers. In the. present study, we performed the first three-dimensional unsteady computations of fish swimming with oscillating and deforming fins. The objective of these computations was to investigate the fluid dynamics of force production associated with the flapping aquatic flight of the bird wrasse Gomphosus varius. For this computational work, we used the geometry of the wrasse and its pectoral fin, and previously measured …

Exhibition Notes, Number 19, Summer 2002. Beginning in late February and continuing throughout the remainder of the semester, Wendy Ewald visited Michelle Silvia’s classroom of special–education students at the Carl G. Lauro Memorial Elementary School in Providence. The photographs and videos of the children learning to read and the patterns used in classroom lessons are the result of a three-way collaboration— teacher, students, and artist. The following questions were posed to Wendy Ewald and Michelle Silvia by David Henry, Head of Education at The RISD Museum.
