Organizational Persistence And Change: A Case Study Of A Community College, Paula L. Welmers
Organizational Persistence And Change: A Case Study Of A Community College, Paula L. Welmers
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This longitudinal case study examined the origins, growth, and development of one community college in Michigan, North Central Michigan College (NCMC). The purpose of the study was to understand organizational persistence and change through learning how one organization formed and developed over time.
Five eras between 1958 and 1995 were described, and a conceptual frame considered three levels of organizational responsibility: national, state, and local environments; core technology activities; and leadership activities. Core technology activities were further analyzed using eight indicators of centrality and marginality: a) policy, b) number and type of employees, c) dedicated facilities; d) funding source, e) …

Leadership Development: Conflict Management For College Student Leaders, Judy Rashid
Leadership Development: Conflict Management For College Student Leaders, Judy Rashid
Faculty Publications
This study by Dr. Judy Rashid examines the impact of conflict management training on the leadership effectiveness of college student organizational presidents. Framing student organizations as “learning laboratories,” the article highlights the prevalence of conflict in student leadership roles and the critical need for structured training to address it. Using a pretest-posttest experimental design, 60 student leaders were divided into experimental and control groups, with the experimental group receiving a 10.5-hour intervention focused on conflict styles, negotiation, and mediation. Results indicated a statistically significant increase in the use of the Integrating conflict management style—a collaborative approach associated with long-term problem-solving—among …

Nonfamily Abducted Children: National Estimates And Characteristics., David Finkelhor, Heather Hammer, Andrea J. Sedlack
Crimes Against Children Research Center
Presents national estimates of children abducted by nonfamily perpetrators, based on surveys of households and law enforcement agencies. The Bulletin, which is part of a series summarizing findings from the Second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART–2), also analyzes characteristics of victims, perpetrators, and episodes. During the study period, an estimated 58,200 children were abducted by nonfamily perpetrators; 115 were victims of stereotypical kidnappings. Teenagers were the most frequent victims. Nearly half of all victims were sexually assaulted. In 40 percent of stereotypical kidnappings, the child was killed; in another 4 percent, the child was …

Bidding For Envy-Freeness: A Procedural Approach To N-Player Fair-Division Problems, Claus-Jochen Haake, Matthias G. Raith, Francis E. Su
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We develop a procedure for implementing an efficient and envy-free allocation of m objects among n individuals with the possibility of monetary side-payments, assuming that players have quasi–linear utility functions. The procedure eliminates envy by compensating envious players. It is fully descriptive and says explicitly which compensations should be made, and in what order. Moreover, it is simple enough to be carried out without computer support. We formally characterize the properties of the procedure, show how it establishes envy-freeness with minimal resources, and demonstrate its application to a wide class of fair-division problems.

New Challenges For Wind Shock Models: The Chandra Spectrum Of The Hot Star Delta Orionis, N. A. Miller, J. P. Cassinelli, W. L. Waldron, J. J. Macfarlane, David H. Cohen
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
The Chandra spectrum of delta Ori A shows emission lines from hydrogen- and helium-like states of Si, Mg, Ne, and O, along with N VII Lyalpha and lines from ions in the range Fe XVII-Fe XXI In contrast to the broad lines seen in zeta Pup and zeta Ori (850 +/- 40 and 1000 +/- 240 km s(-1) half-width at half-maximum [HWHM], respectively), these lines are broadened to only 430 +/- 60 km s(-1) HWHM. This is much lower than the measured wind terminal velocity of 2000 km s(-1). The forbidden, intercombination, and resonance (fir) lines from He-like ions indicate …

Macroeconomic And Political Instabilities In Sub-Saharan Africa, James Gaius Ibe
Macroeconomic And Political Instabilities In Sub-Saharan Africa, James Gaius Ibe
African Social Science Review
The analysis uses macroeconomic models designed to capture the direct impact of political instability on macroeconomic stability, and the effect of macroeconomic instability on political stability. The model is an adaptation of the neo-classical production function with fixed-effects formulated to explore the postulated interdependencies in key sub-Saharan countries over the period 1960-1990. The estimates indicate that macroeconomic instability indices as well as unemployment and inflation are positive and significantly correlated with the political instability variable. Also, there is a significant negative relationship between political instability and the nations economic output as measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Furthermore, there …
