An Empirical Test Of The Rent-Shifting Hypothesis: The Case Of State Trading Enterprises, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle W. Stiegert Oct 2002

An Empirical Test Of The Rent-Shifting Hypothesis: The Case Of State Trading Enterprises, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle W. Stiegert

Economics

A central result in the theoretical literature on strategic trade is the ‘rent-shifting hypothesis’, the idea that government’s can employ trade policy as a precommitment device to transfer profit from foreign to domestic firms. To our knowledge, however, the rent-shifting hypothesis remains untested empirically. This paper constructs a theory-based empirical test of rent-shifting behavior that relies on observations of government precommitment variables employed through State Trading Enterprises (STEs). The analysis applies data on the delayed producer payment structure of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) and examines its merits as a rent-shifting mechanism in the international durum market. The model fails …

Kinematic Path-Planning For Formations Of Mobile Robots With A Nonholonomic Constraint, Timothy D. Barfoot, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Gabriele M.T. D'Eleuterio Oct 2002

Kinematic Path-Planning For Formations Of Mobile Robots With A Nonholonomic Constraint, Timothy D. Barfoot, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Gabriele M.T. D'Eleuterio

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A method of planning paths for formations of mobile robots with nonholonomic constraints is presented. The kinematics equations presented in this paper allow a general geometrical formation of mobile robots to be maintained while the group as a whole travels an arbitrary path. It is possible to represent a formation of mobile robots by a single entity with the same type of nonholonomic constraint as the individual members. Thus, any path-planner or control method may be used with the formation as would be applied to an individual robot. Equations are developed for changing the geometrical formation and hardware results are …

The Criminalization Of Bootlegging: Unnecessary And Unwise, Lee H. Rousso Oct 2002

The Criminalization Of Bootlegging: Unnecessary And Unwise, Lee H. Rousso

Buffalo Intellectual Property Law Journal

In 1994 the United States extended copyright-like protection to live musical performances by adopting 17 U.S. C. §1101, which authorizes civil remedies that are the same as those for copyright infringement, and 18 U.S.C. §2319A, which subjects violators to fines and prison terms. These new statutes, referred to jointly as the "anti-bootlegging statute," led to raids of record stores and "sting" operations aimed at persons involved in the manufacture and distribution of live concert recordings. This Comment argues that the benefit to society of having these live recordings in circulation outweighs the minimal economic damage incurred by the music industry. …

Variation And Systematics Of The Malayan Snail-Eating Turtle, Malayemys Subtrijuga (Schlegel And Müller, 1844), Timothy R. Brophy Oct 2002

Variation And Systematics Of The Malayan Snail-Eating Turtle, Malayemys Subtrijuga (Schlegel And Müller, 1844), Timothy R. Brophy

Faculty Dissertations

Allometry, sexual dimorphism, and geographic variation were studied in the Malayan snail-eating turtle, Malayemys subtrijuga (Schlegel and Müller, 1844), using regression and discriminant function analyses. Allometry was evident in M. subtrijuga from the Chao Phraya River Basin. Shell shape changed in males as carapace length increased more than shell width and height, whereas females showed proportional changes. This difference in allometric growth yielded sexually dimorphic adults. Females attained larger sizes and had relatively wider and higher shells than males. Discriminant function analysis of shell and head-stripe characters revealed a clear pattern of geographic variation that was consistent with the topography …

Business Method Patents And Their Limits: Justifications, History, And The Emergence Of A Claim Construction Jurisprudence, Nicholas A. Smith Oct 2002

Business Method Patents And Their Limits: Justifications, History, And The Emergence Of A Claim Construction Jurisprudence, Nicholas A. Smith

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Scholars, practitioners, and even popular media spilled much ink over business method patents in the late 1990s, eager to discuss the shift in jurisprudence that enabled patent holders to enforce business method patents for the first time. Since that initial period of excitement--during which businesses filed record numbers of applications for business method patents, and numerous articles tracing the doctrinal shift were published--commentators have written little on the topic. Various patent holders, however, have since litigated business method patent claims. During these first few years after judicial endorsement of business method patents, such litigation has focused on the scope of …
