Absolute Bounds On The Mean Of Sum, Product, Max, And Min: A Probabilistic Extension Of Interval Arithmetic, Scott Ferson, Lev Ginzburg, Vladik Kreinovich, Jorge Lopez

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We extend the main formulas of interval arithmetic for different arithmetic operations x1*x2 to the case when, for each input xi, in addition to the interval [xi]=[xi-,xi+] of possible values, we also know its mean Ei (or an interval [Ei] of possible values of the mean), and we want to find the corresponding bounds for x1*x2 and its mean.

Research On Advanced Soft Computing And Its Applications (Introduction To The Special Issue), Vilem Novak, Irina Perfilieva, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The main objective for the research presented in this special issue is to advance theoretical basis in soft computing, for the purpose of improving applications.

Why is this theoretical research needed? Because soft computing in general (and intelligent control and decision making in particular) are, in many aspects, still an art. To make this methodology easier to apply, we must use the experience of successful applications of fuzzy control, decision making or classification and extract formal rules that would capture this experience. To be able to do that efficiently, we must understand why some versions of soft computing methodology turned …

Today's Threats Prove To Be Tomorrow's Promise: Higher Education In 2027, Theodore J. Kowalski Oct 2002

Today's Threats Prove To Be Tomorrow's Promise: Higher Education In 2027, Theodore J. Kowalski

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The effects of technology on the instructional mission of this nation's colleges and universities have been both positive and negative. While an estimated two million students, many of whom would not have had access to higher education a few decades ago, are already engaged in distance learning, this gain has been paralleled by a proliferation of inferior, profit-driven institutions and degree programs. Some observers already have predicted the demise of the modem university, claiming that a small number of independent, entrepreneurial scholars and an army of low-paid adjunct instructors using the Web and cable television will replace regular faculties in …

Near Bottom Sediment Characterization Offshore Sw San Clemente Island, Daniel D. Sternlicht, Christian De Moustier Oct 2002

Near Bottom Sediment Characterization Offshore Sw San Clemente Island, Daniel D. Sternlicht, Christian De Moustier

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Normal incidence, 23.5 kHz seafloor acoustic backscatter data and bottom video were measured with the Deep Tow instrument package of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 100 meter water depth south of San Clemente Island, CA. The collected data were processed using an echo envelopesediment characterization method, to derive geoacoustic parameters such as particle mean grain size and the strength of the power law characterizing the roughness energy density spectrum of thesediment-water interface. Two regions, sand and silt, were selected based on available ground truth, perceived along-track sediment homogeneity, data quality and tow fish stability. Distinction between sand and fine …

Some Observed Queue Discharge Features At A Freeway Bottleneck Downstream Of A Merge, Robert L. Bertini, Michael J. Cassidy Oct 2002

Some Observed Queue Discharge Features At A Freeway Bottleneck Downstream Of A Merge, Robert L. Bertini, Michael J. Cassidy

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Details of traffic evolution were studied upstream and downstream of a freeway bottleneck located near a busy on-ramp. It is shown that on certain days the bottleneck became active upon dissipation of a queue emanating from somewhere further downstream. On such occasions, the bottleneck occurred at a fixed location, approximately one kilometer downstream of the merge. Notably, even after the dissipation of a downstream queue, the discharge flows in the active bottleneck were nearly constant, since the cumulative counts never deviated much from a linear trend. The average bottleneck discharge flows were also reproducible from day to day. The diagnostic …

Training: A Powerful Way To Prevent Fraud, Carolyn Strand, Steven L. Judd, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster Oct 2002

Training: A Powerful Way To Prevent Fraud, Carolyn Strand, Steven L. Judd, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster

Accounting

Preventing fraud is a big responsibility for all levels of financial management— manager, controller, and CFO. Since managers are responsible for preventing and detecting fraud, they must constantly ask themselves,“What more can we do?” Most fraud is discovered through internal controls, auditors, and employees who notice suspicious activities. Therefore, you may want to consider training fiscal employees and managers to detect fraud.

High-Temperature Controlled Atmosphere For Post-Harvest Control Of Indian Meal Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Preserved Flowers, Jodi A. Sauer, Mark D. Shelton Oct 2002

High-Temperature Controlled Atmosphere For Post-Harvest Control Of Indian Meal Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Preserved Flowers, Jodi A. Sauer, Mark D. Shelton

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

High carbon dioxide atmospheres combined with high temperature were effective for controlling Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) pupae. Pupae were exposed to atmospheres of 60, 80, or 98% carbon dioxide (CO2) in nitrogen (N2), or 60 or 80% CO2in air at temperatures of 26.7°C or 32.2°C and 60% RH. Controlled atmosphere treatments at 32.2°C controlled pupae faster than the same treatments at the lower temperature. At both temperatures high CO2 concentration treatments combined with nitrogen killed pupae faster than high CO2 concentration treatments combined with air. Exposure to 80% carbon dioxide …

Publications and Research

In October 2001, the greater New York City Metropolitan Area was the scene of a bioterrorism attack. The scale of the public response to this attack was not foreseen and threatened to overwhelm the Bioterrorism Response Laboratory’s (BTRL) ability to process and test environmental samples. In a joint effort with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the cooperation of the Department of Defense, a massive effort was launched to maintain and sustain the laboratory response and return test results in a timely fashion. This effort was largely successful. The development and expansion of the facility are described, as …
