Optical Constants And Roughness Study Of Dc Magnetron Sputtered Iridium Films, Li Yan, John A. Woollam
Optical Constants And Roughness Study Of Dc Magnetron Sputtered Iridium Films, Li Yan, John A. Woollam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Extremely smooth thin films of iridium have been deposited onto superpolished fused silica substrates using dc magnetron sputtering in an argon plasma. The influence of deposition process parameters on film microroughness has been investigated. In addition, film optical constants have been determined using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, over the spectral range from vacuum ultraviolet to middle infrared (140 nm–35 μm). Because the Ir films were optically thick and the surface roughnesses were measured by atomic force microscopy then accounted for in the optical model, the as-determined film optical constants are expected to be the best available for Ir bulk metals, …

Temperature and wind data obtained from a Na wind/temperature lidar operated by the University of Illinois group during the Airborne Lidar and Observations of the Hawaiian Airglow (ALOHA-93) Campaign, previously analyzed by Huang et al. [1998] using an isothermal Brunt-Va¨isa¨la¨ frequency, have been reexamined to include temperature gradients in the calculation of the Richardson number. In the previous analysis using the isothermal Brunt-Va¨isa¨la¨ frequency the existence of convective instability could not be assessed. New analysis shows that the nonisothermal Richardson number preserves some features found previously, with some striking differences noticable at times between 0900 and 1030 UT. The nonisothermal …

Hundreds were killed and wounded. In reaction, the army initiated military activities. Hundreds of Palestinians were killed and wounded. Terrorist activity intensified in the beginning of 2002. In March of that year there was an increase of Palestinian terrorist activity. Approximately one hundred and twenty Israeli civilians were killed and hundreds were wounded. Apparent Tricritical Behavior At A Nearly Second-Order Nematic-Isotropic Phase Transition Of A Cyclic Liquid Crystalline Trimer, Ishtiaque M. Syed, Virgil Percec, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt
Faculty Scholarship
An investigation on the cyclic liquid crystalline trimer TPB-(c)9(3) was performed. The optical retardation and Fréedericksz techniques within a few tens of millikelvins of the superheating limit of the nearly second-order nematic isotropic phase transition were used for the investigation purpose. It was found that both the Fréedericksz bend threshold voltage and optical retardation were in good agreement with tricritical behaviour for the transition.
