Characterization of scientific-grade CCDs is extremely important if one hopes to attain very precise quantitative results. A number of characterization methods exist that yield accurate and fast properties in order to make simple measurements. As CCDs are pushed to the their operating limit, other, esoteric tests are required. In this situation, such tests become the determining factors for usability of CCDs. The research presented in this dissertation describes two such tests. This work first examines the ultimate signal-to-noise achievable with a back-illuminated CCD. The environmental damage and global change caused by wildfires are fast becoming issues of local, regional and global concern. Remote sensing techniques are an ideal tool to use for monitoring these threats. Unfortunately, most existing satellites were built for other purposes and are less than ideal for the problems associated with detecting, assessing and monitoring fires. This thesis examines the phenomenology of fires and rank orders several non-traditional detection strategies that have the promise of being more cost effective and less susceptible to false alarms than existing satellite systems and algorithms. A content analysis of pharmaceutical product ads targeted toward pediatricians in the professional media was conducted to determine the extent to which they were informative as well as the quantity and types of information presented. The content analysis model selected was based on previously published and widely implemented standards that have been documented to support research propositions. The study analyzed 67 separate products ads that were published in pediatrician-targeted journals during the first half of 2002. The unusual charge-transfer complexes of various arene donors (ArH) with the nitrosonium cation (NO⁺) resulting from bimolecular [1 ∶ 1] associations can be extended at suitably high ArH concentrations to termolecular processes leading to the analogous [2 ∶ 1] complexes. Spectral analyses of the intense color changes accompanying the arene interaction with NO⁺ provide optimum conditions for the isolation of pure crystalline ternary complexes. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic determinations establish the unique sandwich structure consisting of the NO moiety interposed (parallel) between a pair of cofacial arene donors—reminiscent of the well-known transition metal sandwich complexes with aromatic …

This thesis examined whether multidimensional sustainability performance could be one of those drivers in the pharmaceutical industry. There are currently very few (if any) mandatory requirements for integrating multidimensional sustainability. Nor are there standardized methods of integrating, measuring, or communicating multidimensional sustainability. Poly(methyl methacrylate)–clay nanocomposites have been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is clear that as the polymer undergoes thermal degradation, the clay accumulates at the surface and the barrier properties which result from this clay accumulation have been described as the reason for the decreased heat release rate for nanocomposites. The surface composition of the clay changes as the nanocomposite is heated and the changes are affected by the organic-modification that were applied to the clay in order to prepare the nanocomposite.

An automatic transmission (AT) of a vehicle was compared with a ratio limited Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Dynamic model of a passenger car was simulated to compare the overall efficiency of the vehicle equipped with these different types of transmissions. The overall efficiencies were calculated in terms of fuel consumption of the vehicle. The results are based on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) city and highway driving cycles. The history-dependent recurrence theory for multiplication noise in avalanche photodiodes (APDs), developed by Hayat et al., is generalized to include inter-layer boundary effects in heterostructure APDs with multilayer multiplication regions. These boundary effects include the initial energy of injected carriers as well as bandgap-transition effects within a multilayer multiplication region. It is shown that the excess noise factor can be significantly reduced if the avalanche process is initiated with an energetic carrier, in which case the initial energy serves to reduce the initial dead space associated with the injected carrier. A theory is presented addressing the fundamental limits of image estimation in a setup that uses two photon-correlated beams. These beams have the property that their photon arrivals, as a point process, are ideally synchronized in time and space. The true image represents the spatial distribution of the optical transmittance (or reflectance) of an object. In this setup, one beam is used to probe the image while the other is used as a reference providing additional information on the actual number of photons impinging on the object. The frequency-response characteristics of avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with thin multiplication layers are investigated by means of a recurrence technique that incorporates the history dependence of ionization coefficients. In addition, to characterize the autocorrelation function of the impulse response, new recurrence equations are derived and solved using a parallel computer. The mean frequency response and the gain-bandwidth product are computed and a simple model for the dependence of the gain-bandwidth product on the multiplication-layer width is set forth for GaAs, InP, Al/sub 0.2/Ga/sub 0.8/As, and In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As APDs. A scene-based algorithm is developed to compensate for bias nonuniformity in focal-plane arrays. Nonuniformity can be extremely problematic, especially for mid- to far-infrared imaging systems. The technique is based on use of estimates of interframe subpixel shifts in an image sequence, in conjunction with a linear-interpolation model for the motion, to extract information on the bias nonuniformity algebraically. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by using real infrared and simulated data. Surabaya is Indonesia’s second largest city but is not well known to the outside world. Yet in 1900, Surabaya was a bigger city than Jakarta and one of the main commercial centers of Asia. Collapse of sugar exports during the 1930s depression, followed by the Japanese occupation, revolution, and independence, brought on a long period of stagnation and retreat from the international economy. Not until the export boom of the 1990s did Surabaya regain prominence as Southeast Asia’s leading non–capital–city industrial area.
