There are thousands of statistical reports proving that by next September we will be so computerized and digitized that we will not have to go to school or work anymore. Math, spelling, geography, shopping, banking-it's all in the computer and on the web. All that will be left to us is to eat pizza and watch DVDs. Well, maybe there aren' t thousands of reports, but there are a lot, like, maybe three. OK, so I didn't actually see any reports myself, but the guys who hang at Harvey's Hardware know these things.

Christian Periodical Index-Electronic is now beginning its third year of '-Production. Initial subscriptions to the index were made following conference in 1999 after the official ribbon cutting at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Since that time we have seen many libraries subscribe. The electronic version is available in both cd-rom format and via the Internet. Libraries have successfully setup access both by ip recognition and by password for patrons accessing the library's databases remotely. This year the CPI Team decided to make a more conscious effort to market the product with several initiatives underway. These include direct mailings with a …

So far I have dealt with the Sabbath as something that is primarily for individuals. I believe that there are also Sabbath implications for Christian institutions as corporate bodies - groups of those who say they belong to God. God does not have a separate group plan, whether we are members of a Christian educational organization or a specific local church. But as a community of Christians, we are a manifestation of the body of Christ for the world. An Examination Of The Accuracy Of Slogans Related To Assessment Centres, Filip Lievens

To diffuse new management fads or to promote existing management practices slogans are often used. In this study eight slogans regarding assessment centres were retrieved from brochures of consultancy agencies and were compared to empirical research. These slogans were that assessment centres work, are expensive, fair, have a potent influence on candidates, protide insight into candidates' personality, and are not prone to trainability effects. Other slogans include that trained assessors speak the same language and that candidate reactions are positive. Resulting from this comparison a more fine-grained picture of the strengths and weaknesses of assessment centres emerges. In particular, it …

The Dangers Of Mediation In Domestic Violence Cases, Sarah Krieger

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that mandatory mediation in family law cases involving domestic violence undermines the progress made by the battered women's movement by re-privatizing domestic violence issues. Mediation, while intended to resolve disputes amicably, fails to address the inherent power imbalance in abusive relationships and risks further victimizing survivors. The privatization of these disputes through mediation diminishes accountability for abusers and erodes legal protections for victims.

The Use Of Speech Retrieval Systems: A Study Design., Jinmook Kim, Douglas W. Oard

What relevance criteria do users apply when selecting a speech recording? What attributes of the recording do they rely on for each criterion? This paper proses a qualitative research study design to explore those questions. A conceptual framework is presented, research questions are introduced, and the study design is described. The paper concludes with some observations on how the results of the study might inform the design of future systems.

Oral history - and spoken word collections generally - are assuming increasing importance in digital libraries as the storage, transmission and reproduction infrastructure improves. This paper describes three synergistic approaches to user needs analysis, explains how they are being applied to guide the design of systems to provide access oral history collections (using a s test bed the Shoah Foundations collection of over 50,000 videotaped oral history interviews), presents preliminary results from so -called “discount requirements analysis” and an analysis of “early access” requests, and draws some design implications. Jimmy Hoffa's Revenge: White-Collar Rights Under The Mcdade Amendment, John G. Douglass

I begin the Essay with a bit of comparative history. In Part I, I describe the death and burial of the Sixth Amendment no-contact rule espoused by Jimmy Hoffa. In Part II, I contrast the birth and expansion of an extra-constitutional no-contact rule under Model Rule 4.2 and the McDade Amendment. I begin with these contrasting histories because I believe they illustrate two critical points about the no-contact rule in criminal investigations. First, despite its place in codes of ethics, the no-contact rule in criminal investigations has little to do with ethics. Instead, today's debate over Rule 4.2 is simply …

United States Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) recently introduced Senate Bill 2184, which would split the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit into two circuits. This measure differs from Senate Bill 253 that embodies the recommendations submitted to Congress by the Commission on Structural Alternatives for the Federal Courts of Appeals after its one-year study. The Commission found "no persuasive evidence that the Ninth Circuit ... is not working effectively" and clearly rejected bifurcation. However, the Commission recommended that Congress impose a divisional restructuring on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and authorize the …

Ever since the United States Congress passed the Civil Justice Reform Act of 1990 (CJRA), a minor mystery of federal court jurisprudence has been whether - and if so, precisely when - that significant and controversial legislation expired. The measure instituted unprecedented nationwide experimentation with procedures that lawmakers intended to decrease cost and delay in civil litigation, but the statute's implementation additionally balkanized federal practice and procedure.

An action of a Lie group G on a bundle is said to be transverse if it is projectable and if the orbits of G on E are diffeomorphic under π to the orbits of G on M. Transverse group actions on bundles are completely classified in terms of the pullback bundle construction for G-invariant maps. This classification result is used to give a full characterization of the G invariant sections of E for projectable group actions.

More than 20 million Americans work for federal, state or local governments. Sometimes these employees are disciplined for speaking out against government corruption, belonging to a particular political party, criticizing agency policy or engaging in private conduct of which the employer disapproves. Granted, government employers need some leeway when dealing with their employees. After all, the primary function of a government agency is to provide efficient services to the public, and if a government employer were second-guessed every time it disciplined a public employee, services could grind to a halt. The majority of courts have cited Bethel v. Fraser in such a way as to give public school officials free reign to censor vulgar, lewd, or plainly offensive student speech. Some courts have gone a step further and prohibited student speech that contains offensive ideas. This article seeks to explain how the Fraser decision curtailed student rights recognized in the Supreme Court's last pure student speech case, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District.

Women High School Principals: Perspectives On Role Conflict, Role Commitment, And Job Satisfaction, Ellen Eckman

This study is an investigation of women high school principals in terms of the challenges they face, role conflicts they experience, their role commitment, and their job satisfaction. The purpose is to describe women high school principals addressing the issue of the continued underrepresentation of women in the high school principalship. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from women high school principals in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The findings indicate that role conflict impacts career decisions—respondents delayed entering the high school principalship until the demands of raising their children had lessened. Herman Talmadge, who died March 21, 2002, was a governor, senator, and Georgia icon who controlled state politics for much of the last half of the 20th century. While many events in Talmadge’s life deserve attention, one event in particular stands out amongst the trials and tribulations, victories and scandals in this long American political life. In 1946, the Georgia gubernatorial election brought a state government to its knees, a state Supreme Court to the height of its power and Talmadge into the national spotlight as a revolver toting aspiring governor.

Late last summer, Professor F. Jay Dougherty invited me to participate in "Tune In, Turn On, Cop Out? The Media and Social Responsibility," the Fourth Annual Entertainment Law Symposium sponsored by Loyola Law School of Los Angeles. I learned that one of the issues to be examined was media liability for violent audience behavior, exploring from both social science and legal perspectives the alleged link between violent speech and violent conduct.
