Las Vegas is known as a post-modern city; its development in the later half of the twenty-first century is an explosion of tourism, spectacle and gambling. Especially with the transitions of the past two years and the great variety in the new shows, no one has asked the question how did Las Vegas get from the showgirl to Blue Man Group? If we are to visualize a Las Vegas in the future, it is essential that we understand the whys of and the forces that impel change in the Las Vegas entertainment industry; As there are no chronologies of the …

Pricing And Eminent Domain Takings: A Case Study Of Residential Property In Las Vegas, Nevada, William C Kuhn Jan 2002

Pricing And Eminent Domain Takings: A Case Study Of Residential Property In Las Vegas, Nevada, William C Kuhn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This case study tests whether compensation for eminent domain takings equals estimated market prices for residential property located near McCarran Airport in Clark County Nevada. The hedonic model provides evidence that takings compensation was often less than estimated market price, a discount was paid to owners of smaller homes, and a premium was paid to owners of larger homes. Although data constraints, estimation issues and lack of previous studies hamper broad conclusions, the robust data set, consistency of model specification results, and the explanatory power of economic thought is evident in these results. The results are somewhat surprising in that …

The Measurement Of Organizational Identification And Organizational Commitment Found Among The Membership Of Mary Kay Cosmetics, Philip Clark Oviatt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study reported here utilized two constructs; the Organizational Identification Questionnaire (OIQ) (Cheney 1983b) and the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) (Mowday, Porter, and Steers 1979), to determine if a positive correlation existed between them when applied to the Mary Kay Cosmetics Organization, a Direct Sales Marketing organization. The OIQ and the OCQ are two constructs that have been widely utilized to study the relationship between the employee and the organization. A review of literature illustrates, that although each concept offers a distinct meaning, when utilized as a construct they are synonymous. This study found that identification and commitment were strongly …

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich Jan 2002

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we describe a noise detection and a motion-noise separation algorithm, as well as the stochastic properties of the noise. The difference between corresponding pixels subject to one type of noise, of two frames, has mean vector equal to (0,0,0), and variance covariance matrix with relatively small variances, for the (R, G, B) difference values. The other type of noise is a result of disturbance of the light equilibrium due to motion in neighboring or nearby pixels. In this type of noise the mean of the difference is non-zero. Every pixel not included in the one type of …

After source water protection zones were defined, field work and GIS defined the potential contaminant sources and land uses within the protection zones; The GIS nonpoint source model shows that roads account for approximately 25% of the …

United States Post Gulf-War Policy Toward Iraq: A Systemic Assessment, Amanda Christine Ringelberg Jan 2002

United States Post Gulf-War Policy Toward Iraq: A Systemic Assessment, Amanda Christine Ringelberg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis proposes that US policy is structurally flawed toward Iraq and the Middle East in general. This structural flaw in US policy-making is a result of ignoring the regional considerations of the Middle East as a subsystem. Current US strategy toward Iraq is doomed to fail because of the unique structural considerations in the Middle East and the failure of policy-makers to recognize them; The thesis begins with a theoretical examination of the Middle East subsystem, based on principles from international systems theory. Several patterns of regularity that define the subsystem are then outlined. An assessment of US goals …

Exploration Of The Nature Of The Work Done By United States Marshals Service Employees In The District Of Nevada, Michael Robin Schlaerth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For the first time in its 212 year history, the United States Marshals Service created a position for employees specifically designated to assist district offices experiencing administrative and operational problems. This move was promoted by a recruiting session in April of 2001 which was designed entirely to train individuals for the job entitled GS-082. This move is the result of the agency's overall need for more labor. However, while these agents carry the title of "Deputy Marshal", they do not require the same intense training of the standard GS-1811 agents, as their duties do not demand it. Employees in the …

Investigation Of Charge-Transport Models For Organic Light-Emitting Devices, Richard Simon Schofield Jan 2002

Investigation Of Charge-Transport Models For Organic Light-Emitting Devices, Richard Simon Schofield

Bird Perches And Soil Amendments As Revegetation Techniques For Landslides In Puerto Rico, Aaron Blakely Shiels

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Landslides represent one of the most severe natural disturbances in tropical rainforests. The loss of the topsoil layer is detrimental to plant establishment and plant succession as it contains the soil seed bank, as well as the majority of the nutrients essential for plant growth. In this study, I introduced bird perches to six Puerto Rican landslides with three types of surfaces (bare, climbing fern, grass) to test the limitation of bird-dispersed forest seeds in landslides and to accelerate forest seedling establishment. I also mixed four soil amendments (Cecropia leaves, Cyathea fronds, forest soil, and commercial fertilizer) in five recent …

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva Jan 2002

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is an attempt to apply the negotiated order perspective to the analysis of the lived experience of workers in two franchised fast food restaurants. Drawing primarily on the work of Anselm Strauss (1978) and D. H. J. Morgan (1975), I have examined data taken from auto-ethnographic and overt observation. I found that workers in different negotiation contexts would use implicit and explicit negotiation to achieve internal and external goals. Worker's negotiation strategies depended on the actor's individual proclivities and their interpretation of the negotiation context. Issues subject to negotiation included wages, the schedule, the amount of effort expended, …

The current study used self-reports from 453 college women under 30 years of age to investigate factors that may influence breast cancer screening behaviors. Examiners and non-examiners were compared on a series of variables: (1) health beliefs and practices (personal risk estimates for breast cancer, risk reduction expectancies, perceived susceptibility to breast cancer, perceived seriousness of breast cancer, perceived benefits of BSE, perceived barriers to BSE, confidence in performing BSE, general health motivation, the …

Bench-Scale Modeling To Evaluate The Mechanical Effects Of Subsidence On A Monofill-Type Landfill Cover, Yuboon Tan Jan 2002

Bench-Scale Modeling To Evaluate The Mechanical Effects Of Subsidence On A Monofill-Type Landfill Cover, Yuboon Tan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A bench-scale model was developed to simulate the effects of subsidence on compacted monofill-type landfill covers for the low-level radioactive waste landfills of the Radioactive Waste Management Sites of the Nevada Test Site. Of particular interest is the collapse mechanism of the cover with respect to the soil density and compaction water content. Collapse in covers compacted at lower water content was in the form of progressive upward caving by consistent raveling, with distinct, continuous preferential pathways for saturated fluid flow and vapor migration formed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Robert Hugh Benson And The Catholic Literary Revival In Edwardian England, Chad Philip Stutz Jan 2002

Robert Hugh Benson And The Catholic Literary Revival In Edwardian England, Chad Philip Stutz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Robert Hugh Benson was a popular religious author in Edwardian England; however, he has been all but forgotten by posterity. This study re-examines Benson's contribution to the Catholic Literary Revival, a movement rooted in Romanticism. Benson utilized a "ministerial approach" to spread his message of renewal. Whereas other Revivalists wrote official histories, Benson wrote historical novels to advance the claim that the sixteenth century was responsible for British social disintegration. By presenting history as art, Benson presented his Christian worldview in a palatable form. Benson also had a complex relationship with 1890's Aestheticism. Though he wrote a novel denouncing its …

The Asymptotic Behavior Of The Integer Solutions Of The Rosenberger Equations, Kensaku Umeda Jan 2002

The Asymptotic Behavior Of The Integer Solutions Of The Rosenberger Equations, Kensaku Umeda

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Rosenberger equations are equations of the form: ax 2 + by2 + cz 2 = dxyz, where the sets of coefficients ( a, b, c, d) are all integers such that each of a, b, and c divides d, and the equations themselves have infinitely many integer solutions. Rosenberger has shown that there are only six such sets of coefficients, one of which is the Markoff equation, x2 + y2 + z2 = 3xyz. Zagier investigated the asymptotic behavior of the integer solutions of the Markoff equation. In this paper, we apply Zagier's techniques to the Rosenberger equations and …
