The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of layering geometry on the formation of clay smears in laboratory prepared soil specimens. Digitized video clips of specimen deformation under vertical shear were reviewed. New conventions and definitions were developed to describe and measure the onset of clay smear. Measurements for a variety of sample layering geometries were taken. Specimen geometry was compared with its respective smear development properties to derive general relationships; The study showed that as the sand thickness within a specimen increased, the required amount of vertical displacement and sand layer displacement prior to smear also …

Wwwprivacygov: A Constitutional And Legislative Review, Stephanie Ann Murphy Jan 2002

Wwwprivacygov: A Constitutional And Legislative Review, Stephanie Ann Murphy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

One of the most controversial and evolving rights recognized within recent years has been the right to privacy. During the twentieth century, the Supreme Court and the United States Congress recognized the existence of this right, although in limited aspects. In the twenty-first century, Americans' privacy rights have clashed with the evolution and the use of the Internet. Complications between a person's privacy and the information needed for national security interests arose. The following study examines the question of where the privacy of an individual in this new era ends and where government intrusion begins. Through a qualitative analysis, constitutional …

The Measurement Of Organizational Identification And Organizational Commitment Found Among The Membership Of Mary Kay Cosmetics, Philip Clark Oviatt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study reported here utilized two constructs; the Organizational Identification Questionnaire (OIQ) (Cheney 1983b) and the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) (Mowday, Porter, and Steers 1979), to determine if a positive correlation existed between them when applied to the Mary Kay Cosmetics Organization, a Direct Sales Marketing organization. The OIQ and the OCQ are two constructs that have been widely utilized to study the relationship between the employee and the organization. A review of literature illustrates, that although each concept offers a distinct meaning, when utilized as a construct they are synonymous. This study found that identification and commitment were strongly …

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich Jan 2002

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we describe a noise detection and a motion-noise separation algorithm, as well as the stochastic properties of the noise. The difference between corresponding pixels subject to one type of noise, of two frames, has mean vector equal to (0,0,0), and variance covariance matrix with relatively small variances, for the (R, G, B) difference values. The other type of noise is a result of disturbance of the light equilibrium due to motion in neighboring or nearby pixels. In this type of noise the mean of the difference is non-zero. Every pixel not included in the one type of …

This thesis develops a better understanding of issues related to surface water contamination and protection of drinking water sources in the Las Vegas Valley. A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to identify source water protection zones and to estimate nonpoint source loads for the entire watershed; The extent of the source water protection zones is represented by the valley's dry weather flows. After source water protection zones were defined, field work and GIS defined the potential contaminant sources and land uses within the protection zones; The GIS nonpoint source model shows that roads account for approximately 25% of the …

United States Post Gulf-War Policy Toward Iraq: A Systemic Assessment, Amanda Christine Ringelberg Jan 2002

United States Post Gulf-War Policy Toward Iraq: A Systemic Assessment, Amanda Christine Ringelberg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis proposes that US policy is structurally flawed toward Iraq and the Middle East in general. This structural flaw in US policy-making is a result of ignoring the regional considerations of the Middle East as a subsystem. Current US strategy toward Iraq is doomed to fail because of the unique structural considerations in the Middle East and the failure of policy-makers to recognize them; The thesis begins with a theoretical examination of the Middle East subsystem, based on principles from international systems theory. Several patterns of regularity that define the subsystem are then outlined. An assessment of US goals …

Exploration Of The Nature Of The Work Done By United States Marshals Service Employees In The District Of Nevada, Michael Robin Schlaerth Jan 2002

Exploration Of The Nature Of The Work Done By United States Marshals Service Employees In The District Of Nevada, Michael Robin Schlaerth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For the first time in its 212 year history, the United States Marshals Service created a position for employees specifically designated to assist district offices experiencing administrative and operational problems. This move was promoted by a recruiting session in April of 2001 which was designed entirely to train individuals for the job entitled GS-082. This move is the result of the agency's overall need for more labor. However, while these agents carry the title of "Deputy Marshal", they do not require the same intense training of the standard GS-1811 agents, as their duties do not demand it. Employees in the …

Investigation Of Charge-Transport Models For Organic Light-Emitting Devices, Richard Simon Schofield Jan 2002

Investigation Of Charge-Transport Models For Organic Light-Emitting Devices, Richard Simon Schofield

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) show promise for use in the display industry, particularly as the active display portion of flat panel televisions and monitors. Unfortunately important material fundamentals of these organics are not well understood, like charge transport, charge injection and exciton formation/relaxation. It is therefore useful to attempt to understand the behavior of these materials in the physical state that they will be used in: thin films. There have been two models proposed to explain charge transport in these materials and it is the purpose of this work to examine them using a group of similar materials. These …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Middle Mountain shear zone (MMSZ) and the brittle Upper detachment, two west-dipping normal fault systems, and the 25.3 Ma Red Butte stocks are exposed in a metamorphic core complex in northwest Utah, in the central Grouse Creek Mountains. 40Ar/39Ar thermochronology and kinematic studies indicate two periods of motion along the MMSZ in Eocene and Late Oligocene to Early Miocene time and motion along the sub-parallel Upper detachment in Middle Miocene time. Eocene fabrics record top-to-the-305 noncoaxial shear and are cut by the Red Butte stock and associated leucocratic dikes and sills. The Oligo-Miocene fabric exhibits a foliation parallel to …

Bird Perches And Soil Amendments As Revegetation Techniques For Landslides In Puerto Rico, Aaron Blakely Shiels Jan 2002

Bird Perches And Soil Amendments As Revegetation Techniques For Landslides In Puerto Rico, Aaron Blakely Shiels

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Landslides represent one of the most severe natural disturbances in tropical rainforests. The loss of the topsoil layer is detrimental to plant establishment and plant succession as it contains the soil seed bank, as well as the majority of the nutrients essential for plant growth. In this study, I introduced bird perches to six Puerto Rican landslides with three types of surfaces (bare, climbing fern, grass) to test the limitation of bird-dispersed forest seeds in landslides and to accelerate forest seedling establishment. I also mixed four soil amendments (Cecropia leaves, Cyathea fronds, forest soil, and commercial fertilizer) in five recent …

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva Jan 2002

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is an attempt to apply the negotiated order perspective to the analysis of the lived experience of workers in two franchised fast food restaurants. Drawing primarily on the work of Anselm Strauss (1978) and D. H. J. Morgan (1975), I have examined data taken from auto-ethnographic and overt observation. I found that workers in different negotiation contexts would use implicit and explicit negotiation to achieve internal and external goals. Worker's negotiation strategies depended on the actor's individual proclivities and their interpretation of the negotiation context. Issues subject to negotiation included wages, the schedule, the amount of effort expended, …

Breast Cancer Screening Behaviors And Beliefs In College Women, Leslie Ann Snyder Jan 2002

Breast Cancer Screening Behaviors And Beliefs In College Women, Leslie Ann Snyder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Despite recommendations by health professionals and the American Cancer Society, few women perform breast self-examinations (BSE) or have clinical breast examinations (CBE) on a regular basis. The current study used self-reports from 453 college women under 30 years of age to investigate factors that may influence breast cancer screening behaviors. Examiners and non-examiners were compared on a series of variables: (1) health beliefs and practices (personal risk estimates for breast cancer, risk reduction expectancies, perceived susceptibility to breast cancer, perceived seriousness of breast cancer, perceived benefits of BSE, perceived barriers to BSE, confidence in performing BSE, general health motivation, the …

Bench-Scale Modeling To Evaluate The Mechanical Effects Of Subsidence On A Monofill-Type Landfill Cover, Yuboon Tan Jan 2002

Bench-Scale Modeling To Evaluate The Mechanical Effects Of Subsidence On A Monofill-Type Landfill Cover, Yuboon Tan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A bench-scale model was developed to simulate the effects of subsidence on compacted monofill-type landfill covers for the low-level radioactive waste landfills of the Radioactive Waste Management Sites of the Nevada Test Site. Of particular interest is the collapse mechanism of the cover with respect to the soil density and compaction water content. Collapse in covers compacted at lower water content was in the form of progressive upward caving by consistent raveling, with distinct, continuous preferential pathways for saturated fluid flow and vapor migration formed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Robert Hugh Benson And The Catholic Literary Revival In Edwardian England, Chad Philip Stutz Jan 2002

Robert Hugh Benson And The Catholic Literary Revival In Edwardian England, Chad Philip Stutz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Robert Hugh Benson was a popular religious author in Edwardian England; however, he has been all but forgotten by posterity. This study re-examines Benson's contribution to the Catholic Literary Revival, a movement rooted in Romanticism. Benson utilized a "ministerial approach" to spread his message of renewal. Whereas other Revivalists wrote official histories, Benson wrote historical novels to advance the claim that the sixteenth century was responsible for British social disintegration. By presenting history as art, Benson presented his Christian worldview in a palatable form. Benson also had a complex relationship with 1890's Aestheticism. Though he wrote a novel denouncing its …

The Asymptotic Behavior Of The Integer Solutions Of The Rosenberger Equations, Kensaku Umeda Jan 2002

The Asymptotic Behavior Of The Integer Solutions Of The Rosenberger Equations, Kensaku Umeda

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Rosenberger equations are equations of the form: ax 2 + by2 + cz 2 = dxyz, where the sets of coefficients ( a, b, c, d) are all integers such that each of a, b, and c divides d, and the equations themselves have infinitely many integer solutions. Rosenberger has shown that there are only six such sets of coefficients, one of which is the Markoff equation, x2 + y2 + z2 = 3xyz. Zagier investigated the asymptotic behavior of the integer solutions of the Markoff equation. In this paper, we apply Zagier's techniques to the Rosenberger equations and …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Faster, simpler, and more cost-effective held screening tools can increase the amount of information available concerning the location, source, and/or concentration of pollutants present in the environment. The Enzyme Inhibition Bioassay 96 (EIB 96) is one such field-screening tool; The EIB 96 is an assay that can detect the presence of organophosphate and carbamate compounds, providing scientists with valuable information to focus their future sampling efforts. The assay is based on the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase by organophosphate and carbamate compounds. The organophosphate and carbamate compounds that were used in this project were the pesticides carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, dichlorvos, …

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker Jan 2002

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines power and political processes involved in the decision to construct a second commercial airport for Las Vegas, NV and the southern Nevada region. Using interview data and document analysis I argue that the organizational capacity of the state and its relative autonomy enabled state actors to dominate the airport's development process by defining the need and setting the agenda for the project. Additionally, state officials acquired the land for the project by circumventing established mechanisms for public participation and involvement. The findings support a state-centered approach to understanding who wields power and how in political processes. Ultimately, …

The Effectiveness Of Reading Programs For The Intermediate Remedial Student, Hope Ann Walter Jan 2002

The Effectiveness Of Reading Programs For The Intermediate Remedial Student, Hope Ann Walter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research on remedial reading programs has a controversial history. Although extensive research has been conducted on pull-out programs, far less research has evaluated remedial reading programs within the regular classroom. This study investigated whether using the basal or a new program, Project STARS, would produce reading gains in intermediate remedial readers. It was hypothesized that Project STARS subjects would show a greater academic gain in three areas. To evaluate this hypothesis, 46 students were assessed in August and December to determine the amount of growth for each student after instruction in either the Project STARS method or the basal text. …

From Equi-Graphical Sets To Graphical Permutations: A Problem Of Degrees In Graphs, Michael Lee Watson Jan 2002

From Equi-Graphical Sets To Graphical Permutations: A Problem Of Degrees In Graphs, Michael Lee Watson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A set {a1, a2,.., an} of positive integers with a 1 < a2 < &cdots; < an is said to be equi-graphical if there exists a graph with exactly ai vertices of degree ai for each i with 1 ≤ i ≤ n. It is known that such a set is equi-graphical if and only if i=1nai is even and an≤i=1n-1 ai2 . This concept is now generalized to the following problem: Given a set S of positive integers and a permutation pi on S, determine when there exists a graph containing exactly ai vertices of degree pi(ai) for each i (1 ≤ i ≤ n). If such a graph exists, then pi is called a graphical permutation; In this paper, the graphical permutations on sets of size four are characterized and using a criterion of Fulkerson, Hoffman, and McAndrew, we show that a permutation pi of S = {a1, a2, .. , an}, where 1 ≤ a1 < a2 < &cdots; < an and such that pi(a n) = an, is graphical if and only if i=1naip ai is even and an≤i=1n-1 aipai .

Modeling Image Databases Using Xml Schema, Min Xu Jan 2002

Modeling Image Databases Using Xml Schema, Min Xu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a model for still images in order to support content-based querying and browsing by hierarchical tree structures and object relational graphs. We use the extensible markup language (XML) schema to illustrate and exemplify the proposed model because of its interoperability and flexibility advantages. Of primary interest is the notion of complex types and referential integrity to fully describe the physical and semantic properties of images. XQuery is used to support query processing. We further show how these complex types of XML schema can be used to overcome the shortcomings of reported image database descriptions in the literature.

Identification Of Dynamic Properties Of Materials For The Nuclear Waste Package, Konstantin Grigoryevich Zabotkin Jan 2002

Identification Of Dynamic Properties Of Materials For The Nuclear Waste Package, Konstantin Grigoryevich Zabotkin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The nuclear waste package must be designed to withstand structural deformation caused by static, thermal, and handling loads. In addition, it has to maintain its integrity in case of accidents, where it may be subjected to high loads over very short period of time. To simulate accident scenarios accurately, this thesis attempts to experimentally identify dynamic properties of materials for the nuclear waste container; The implementation of the project involves a number of steps. First, candidate materials for the nuclear waste package were identified. Literature review showed that the behavior of these materials under impact loading was not well documented. …

The Establishment Of The Oligomeric Purity And Molecular Structure For N-Methylated Bis(8-Hydroxyquinoline) Zinc (N = 0, 2, 4, And 5), Anna Rose Falkowitz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Znq2 has been studied as electroluminescent material. However, no correlation of the structure of Znq2 to resulting device properties has been established. Most reports of Znq2 as an electroluminescent material have not considered the impact of higher order molecular structures on the device properties. By utilization of size exclusion chromatography it has been determined that the dominant species of nMeq2Zn (n = 0, 4, 5) is tetrameric in crystalline form dissolved in chloroform, in thermally vapor deposited films, and in crystalline form dissolved in chloroform and DMSO. The 2Meq2Zn was determined to be solely monomeric under the previously mentioned condition. …
