The Effects Of Socialization Through The Arts: Teaching Life Skills Strategies To Youth In West Las Vegas, Marcia Raquel Robinson Jan 2002

The Effects Of Socialization Through The Arts: Teaching Life Skills Strategies To Youth In West Las Vegas, Marcia Raquel Robinson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There are at least 200 gangs in Southern Nevada with more than 7,700 identified members. "Gang bangers" do not anticipate a future or invest in "dreams," most do not expect to live beyond their 20's. Las Vegas is more the rule than the exception; the West Las Vegas community is the epicenter needing attention. The planning and development of this pilot program "The Performing and Visual Arts Camp for Kids" focused on teaching life skills and character development, such as getting along with others, respect for oneself and others, initiative, the ability to communicate, problem solving, perseverance, and goal setting …

Relationship Of Selected Student Characteristics To Student Ratings Of Importance And Levels Of Satisfaction, Michael L Sauer Jan 2002

Relationship Of Selected Student Characteristics To Student Ratings Of Importance And Levels Of Satisfaction, Michael L Sauer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Low graduation and retention rates are problems that many universities and colleges across the country face. Students often leave an institution prematurely, not because of academic difficulties but because of other obstacles that they believe impede their progress. Studying student satisfaction can help to understand what some of these difficulties might be. In order to address this issue, this study examined the relationship between student ratings of importance and student satisfaction with elements of the university environment and student characteristics; There were 1,208 subjects in this study. All subjects were given the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory during the Spring 2002 …

Rage In The City Of Angels: The Historical Development Of The Skinhead Subculture In Los Angeles, Pete George Simi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the historical development of the racist skinhead subculture in Los Angeles. The skinhead subculture is a highly diverse network of gangs that has experienced significant changes over the last twenty-five years. I use an in-depth case study approach that relies upon extensive observation of and interviews with current and former skinheads to explain how and why L.A. skinhead gangs have changed over time. I argue that the Los Angeles skinhead subculture has moved through three phases of organizational emphasis which I characterize respectively as social, political, and economic oriented gangs. My aim is to analyze how skinheads …

An Analysis Of First Amendment Jurisprudence And School Voucher Programs After Zelman V Simmons -Harris (2002), Lori A Stengel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association, Thomas Jefferson stated the need for a "wall of separation between Church & State." The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment maintained that metaphoric wall of separation; however, the magnitude of separation has varied over the course of time. The Supreme Court's holding in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (2002) ushers in a new era of Establishment Clause interpretation; In Zelman, the Cleveland Scholarship and Tutoring Program faced an Establishment Clause challenge. An analysis of the Cleveland program illustrated that in the 1999--2000 school year, 82% of the participating private schools were religious in …

Two data sources from Bureau of Justice Statistics were utilized for this analysis. The first data set was titled "State Court Processing Statistics, 1990, 1992, 1994, …

Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel Jan 2002

Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

International tourism has played an important role in unintended social changes in socialist countries. These social and cultural changes affect not only the economic, political and cultural genre of the government, but also of its citizens; This thesis asks the question, "Has the re-introduction of international tourism in Cuba diluted and compromised the egalitarian goals of the revolution"? I intend to show that the consequences of Cuba's emerging tourist industry has not only compromised the ideology of the revolution, but has in fact seen a return of a pre-revolution stratified society and parallel economies, one based on the peso and …

Analysis Of Cyclic Shallow-Water Carbonates: Cambrian Highland Peak Formation, Eastern Nevada, Robyn Allyn Howley Jan 2002

Analysis Of Cyclic Shallow-Water Carbonates: Cambrian Highland Peak Formation, Eastern Nevada, Robyn Allyn Howley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Several methods of analysis were used to test the robustness of sea level signals recorded in Middle to lower Upper Cambrian shallow-water carbonate rocks in the southwestern United States and to refine stratigraphic correlation of this interval. Embedded Markov chain and cycle architectural analysis define the high-frequency accommodation signal, whereas cycle grouping pattern and facies proportions analysis reveals low-frequency sequence stratigraphic accommodation changes. Gamma analysis and Fischer plots were unsuccessful in deciphering the signature of high or low frequency signals; Six low-frequency accommodation events are present in the Middle to lower Upper Cambrian Highland Peak Formation. Each sequence is bounded …

Through compiled site data and analysis of settlement models the information supports the conclusion that there was a substantial prehistoric use of the Shivwits Plateau; A specific question about pottery production guides the second part of the research. Was the sherd-tempered Shivwits Plain and Shivwits Corrugated …

Personal Epistemology: Implications For Stress In College Students, Robyn M Johnson Jan 2002

Personal Epistemology: Implications For Stress In College Students, Robyn M Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research study investigated whether college students' epistemological beliefs (i.e. certain knowledge, simple knowledge, fixed ability, quick learning, and omniscient authority) could predict negative stressors and/or reactions to stress in their college experience. Based on responses to two self-assessment inventories and a demographic survey; analysis of the data suggests that over and above contributions from demographics (i.e. gender, ethnicity, age, and education level), certain dimensions of epistemological beliefs contributed significantly to the prediction of negative stress in college students. This suggests that it is essential for educators to provide opportunities for students' epistemological development; specifically, in the area of constructing …

A Framework For Secure Applications With Qos, Ajay Kanagala Jan 2002

A Framework For Secure Applications With Qos, Ajay Kanagala

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we propose a solution to support Quality of Service (QoS) network communication transactions modeled on differentiated services and economic principles. We propose an enhanced user-level negotiation protocol where transactions are accomplished in a secure mode and where resource allocations are simple and fair. With the availability of inexpensive network monitoring hardware, any issue dealing with network security becomes a priority. Current networks must support multiple levels of service over a single network connection. Differentiated levels of service create new resource management problems for network middleware. Just as a first class passenger is willing to pay the premium …

If we are to visualize a Las Vegas in the future, it is essential that we understand the whys of and the forces that impel change in the Las Vegas entertainment industry; As there are no chronologies of the …

Pricing And Eminent Domain Takings: A Case Study Of Residential Property In Las Vegas, Nevada, William C Kuhn Jan 2002

Pricing And Eminent Domain Takings: A Case Study Of Residential Property In Las Vegas, Nevada, William C Kuhn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This case study tests whether compensation for eminent domain takings equals estimated market prices for residential property located near McCarran Airport in Clark County Nevada. The hedonic model provides evidence that takings compensation was often less than estimated market price, a discount was paid to owners of smaller homes, and a premium was paid to owners of larger homes. Although data constraints, estimation issues and lack of previous studies hamper broad conclusions, the robust data set, consistency of model specification results, and the explanatory power of economic thought is evident in these results. The results are somewhat surprising in that …

The study reported here utilized two constructs; the Organizational Identification Questionnaire (OIQ) (Cheney 1983b) and the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) (Mowday, Porter, and Steers 1979), to determine if a positive correlation existed between them when applied to the Mary Kay Cosmetics Organization, a Direct Sales Marketing organization. The OIQ and the OCQ are two constructs that have been widely utilized to study the relationship between the employee and the organization. A review of literature illustrates, that although each concept offers a distinct meaning, when utilized as a construct they are synonymous. This study found that identification and commitment were strongly …

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich Jan 2002

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we describe a noise detection and a motion-noise separation algorithm, as well as the stochastic properties of the noise. The difference between corresponding pixels subject to one type of noise, of two frames, has mean vector equal to (0,0,0), and variance covariance matrix with relatively small variances, for the (R, G, B) difference values. The other type of noise is a result of disturbance of the light equilibrium due to motion in neighboring or nearby pixels. In this type of noise the mean of the difference is non-zero. Every pixel not included in the one type of …
