Role Of Bcl-2 Family Members In Caspase-Independent Apoptosis Due To Chlamydia Infection, Jean-Luc Perfettini, John C. Reed, Nicole Israel, Jean-Claude Martinou, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Infection with an obligate intracellular bacterium, the Chlamydia trachomatis lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV/L2) strain or the guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis serovar of Chlamydia psittaci, leads to apoptosis of host cells. The apoptosis is not affected by a broad-spectrum caspase inhibitor, and caspase-3 is not activated in infected cells, suggesting that apoptosis mediated by these two strains of Chlamydia is independent of known caspases. Overexpression of the proapoptotic Bcl-2 family member, Bax, was previously shown to induce caspase-independent apoptosis, and we find that Bax is activated and translocates from the cytosol to the mitochondria in C. psittaci-infected cells. C. psittaci-induced apoptosis is …

On Justificiation And Method In Law Reform: The Contracts (Rights Of Third Parties) Act 1999, Andrew Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The present article, whilst focusing on the English Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999, does not canvass the more specific details of that Act which have been dealt with quite comprehensively elsewhere. The focus of this article is broader and is dual in nature. It will examine, first, the justification for the 1999 Act and, in particular, attempts to respond to the critique that the Act is wholly anathema to the underlying justification of the doctrine of privity itself. It will also consider whether or not the 1999 Act is an effective improvement over the existing (as well as …

Morphology, Swimming Performance And Propulsive Mode Of Six Co-Occurring Hydromedusae, Sean Colin, John H. Costello Jan 2002

Morphology, Swimming Performance And Propulsive Mode Of Six Co-Occurring Hydromedusae, Sean Colin, John H. Costello

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Jet propulsion, based on examples from the Hydrozoa, has served as a valuable model for swimming by medusae. However, cnidarian medusae span several taxonomic classes (collectively known as the Medusazoa) and represent a diverse array of morphologies and swimming styles. Does one mode of propulsion appropriately describe swimming by all medusae? This study examined a group of co-occurring hydromedusae collected from the waters of Friday Harbor, WA, USA, to investigate relationships between swimming performance and underlying mechanisms of thrust production. The six species examined encompassed a wide range of bell morphologies and swimming habits. Swimming performance (measured as swimming acceleration …

Prey Resource Utilization By Coexistent Hydromedusae From Friday Harbor, Washington, Usa, John H. Costello, Sean Colin Jan 2002

Prey Resource Utilization By Coexistent Hydromedusae From Friday Harbor, Washington, Usa, John H. Costello, Sean Colin

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Prey selection patterns were quantified for a sympatric group of hydromedusae from Friday Harbor, WA. Selection patterns varied between species, but were largely replicable between sample dates and resembled dietary patterns found in similar studies from neighboring regions. Ambush-foraging medusae (Aglantha digitale, Sarsia tubulosa, and Proboscidactyla flavicirrata) fed primarily on crustacean and ciliated prey but the dietary niches of these hydromedusan species centered on different fractions of the available plankton. Consequently, little dietary overlap occurred between the ambush foraging hydromedusae. In contrast, the dietary niches of cruising predators (Aequorea victoria, Mitrocoma cellularia, and …

The Ethical Foundations Of American Judicial Independence, Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2002

The Ethical Foundations Of American Judicial Independence, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Most lawyers and many citizens could recall the federal constitutional basis for judicial independence. Article III of the United States Constitution mandates that positions be filled through appointment by the President and confirmation by the Senate. That formidable selection process almost invariably ensures that federal judges are intelligent, well educated, and professionally experienced. Those qualities are conducive to judicial independence.

Additionally, federal judges enjoy the following constitutional guarantees: life tenure during good behavior, non-reducible compensation, and removal only through impeachment. These protections free federal judges from the need to behave in politically advantageous ways in order to keep their positions. …

Cleaning Efficiency Of Nickel Titanium Gt And .04 Rotary Files When Used In A Torque Controlled Rotary Handpiece, Calvin Buford Suffridge

Theses and Dissertations

This study determined if the cleaning efficiency of NiTi rotary files in an endodontic electric handpiece using a no torque control setting was superior to that obtained when using the torque control feature. Fifty extracted human anterior teeth with straight canals were divided into two groups of 20 and two control groups of 5. Canals were instrumented with GT and .04 Profile NiTi files until a size 35 advanced to working length. Samples were sectioned, the apical 6 mm of the canal was photographed (x20) and projected onto a 3 x 4 foot grid with squares measuring 0.5 inches each. …

On Thanksgiving And Collective Memory: Constructing The American Tradition, Amy Adamczyk Jan 2002

On Thanksgiving And Collective Memory: Constructing The American Tradition, Amy Adamczyk

Publications and Research

Relying on the approach by Maurice Halbwachs who argued that collective memory is based on contemporary interests and concerns, this article shows how Thanksgiving has changed over time in accordance with the ideas of the day. Aspects of the analysis support Barry Schwartz’s theory that commemoration reflects the historical past. Similar to the pilgrims’ celebration, many people commemorate Thanksgiving by, for example, feasting and praying. But in contrast to Schwartz’s thought, this paper also shows that there are other elements of traditions that have minimal connection with the original event. Forms of commemoration like the Macy’s Day Parade challenge the …

Executive Power In Youngstown's Shadows, Patricia L. Bellia Jan 2002

Executive Power In Youngstown's Shadows, Patricia L. Bellia

Journal Articles

Fifty years after it was handed down, the Supreme Court's decision in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer is among the most important of the Court's separation of powers cases. This Article explores two quite different legacies of the Youngstown case. First, Youngstown has a symbolic or rhetorical power, in that it stands as an example of a court invalidating the actions of a coordinate branch of government in a politically delicate context. When a court wields this weapon, it can take some cover in Youngstown's shadows, and the possibility of a court exercising this power disciplines the executive …

The Enduring Illegitimacy Of The Poison Pill, Julian Velasco Jan 2002

The Enduring Illegitimacy Of The Poison Pill, Julian Velasco

Journal Articles

The poison pill is the ultimate defense against a hostile takeover. From management's perspective, it is almost too good to be true. Originally, the poison pill was seen as a way to guard against the worst of hostile takeover tactics. It has been successful; the poison pill has virtually eliminated these tactics from the repertoires of hostile bidders. However, the poison pill is extremely potent, capable of preventing all hostile takeovers, regardless of their underlying merit. Thus, the poison pill eventually became the means to employ a just say no defense of resisting hostile takeovers, regardless of the interests of …

Environmental Factors That Predict Adolescent Smoking Behavior: The Influence Of Parent, Peer, And Sibling Smoking, Christopher J. Hogan Jan 2002

Environmental Factors That Predict Adolescent Smoking Behavior: The Influence Of Parent, Peer, And Sibling Smoking, Christopher J. Hogan

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of adult smoking begins during adolescence, and in order for prevention programs to be optimally effective it is critical to understand the influences of smoking initiation during this developmental period. However, little research has focused on how environmental factors, such as parent and peer smoking. influence smoking initiation exclusively within a rural population. The current study surveyed students from 23 middle schools in rural Virginia and New York State at the end of the sixth grade and then one-year later at the end of the seventh grade. Logistic regressions were used to predict changes in levels of adolescent …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Analysis and design of indirect-drive National Ignition Facility double-shell targets with hohlraum temperatures of 200 eV and 250 eV are presented. The analysis of these targets includes the assessment of two-dimensional radiation asymmetry and nonlinear mix. Two-dimensional integrated hohlraum simulations indicate that the x-ray illumination can be adjusted to provide adequate symmetry control in hohlraums specially designed to have high laser-coupling efficiency [Suter et al., Phys. Plasmas 7, 2092 (2000)]. These simulations also reveal the need to diagnose and control localized 10?15 keV x-ray emission from the high-Z hohlraum wall because of strong absorption by the high-Z inner shell. Preliminary …

Diffraction Limited 3d Cell Volume Derivation For Scattering Data Analysis, Monica Barbu-Mcinnis Jan 2002

Diffraction Limited 3d Cell Volume Derivation For Scattering Data Analysis, Monica Barbu-Mcinnis

Theses

Ultrasound speckle carries information about the interrogated scattering microstructure. To effectively analyze this scattering microstructure using a monochromatic signal, a separate transmit and receive crossbeam geometry is implemented. The complex echo signal is represented as a superposition of signals due to all scatterers within an effective resolution cell volume, VE, in the crossbeam geometry. An estimate of such an effective resolution cell volume is required in order to remove system effects when attempting to characterize material using moment analysis. The effective resolution cell volume, VE is defined in terms of the overlapping diffraction beam patterns for the transmit-receive transducers. Given …

The molecular weights of two series of PEEK polymers were determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The first series contains oxyalkylene linkages. The other series contains oxyethylene linkages. The synthesis of several thermally stable monomers has been investigated. These monomers include 9,9-dihexylfluorene-2,7-dicarboxaldehyde, 2,7-bis(bromomethyl)-9,9- dibutylfluorene and 2,7-bis(hydroxymethyl)-9,9-diethylfluorene. These monomers can be used to form polymers that will contain short conjugated segments separated by nonconjugated segments. The synthesis of 50 g of each of the following monomers was accomplished: bis(3-methylphenyl) phenylphosphine oxide, bis(4-methylphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide, bis(3- carboxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide and bis(4-carboxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide. These monomers will be used in a polymerization to form polybenzoxazoles. The …

Cd28 Costimulation Requirement For Interferon-Y Secretion By Natural Killer T Cells During Hepatitis B Virus Infection, Paul J. Renick

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Natural Killer T cells (NKT cells) are a unique subset of lymphocytes that express natural killer (NK) and T cell receptors (TCR). The NKT cell population includes four separate subclasses. This paper will focus on Category I NKT cells which possess a canonical TCR receptor (Va14Ja281) that recognizes only hydrophobic antigens presented by CD1d molecules. These cells are believed to play an important regulatory role in immunity. A variety of disease conditions, including cancer, infections and Type I diabetes, are controlled by NKT cells. NKT cells are also capable of secreting large quantities of cytokines, namely interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interferon-gamma …

Defining Benthic Organism Exposure: Bioavailability And Effects Of Non-Polar Organics, Marc Samuel Greenberg

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Laboratory and field tests were conducted to evaluate the hypothesis that factors such as the total organic carbon (TOC) contents and groundwater-surface water interactions (GSI) in the sediments can affect chemical desorption, bioavailability and benthic organism exposure. Laboratory studies were conducted with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fluoranthene (FLU) and the herbicide trifluralin (TF). Toxicokinetic parameters were determined for Lumbriculus variegatus and Hyalella azteca in water-only exposures to 0, 5, 20 and 50 µg/L of the compounds and bioaccumulation was measured during exposures to 0, 100 and 200 mg/kg of FLU and TF spiked onto sediments from Lakes Erie and Huron. …

The Synthesis Of Bromoethoxy And Vinylbenzyloxy Substituted Nlo Chromophores, Michael Joseph Matuszewski Jan 2002

The Synthesis Of Bromoethoxy And Vinylbenzyloxy Substituted Nlo Chromophores, Michael Joseph Matuszewski

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Multiphoton-absorption processes have recently attracted growing interest because of the potential impact on a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from data storage to photodynamic therapy. From the materials standpoint, particular interest is centered in designing chromophores that exhibit a large two-photon cross-section. The current research is focused on establishing synthetic routes that lead to the formation of derivatives of N,N-diphenyl-(7-benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine which contain meta functionalization. A bromoethoxy functionalized chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(2-bromoethoxy)phenyl)-7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren- 2-ylamine , was synthesized and used as a polymer pendent while a vinylbenzyloxy chromophore, N-phenyl-N-(3-(4-vinylbenzyloxy)phenyl)-7- (benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-ylamine, was synthesized as a hydrosilation substrate. A compound containing three chromophores, 1,3,5-tris(3-(N-phenyl- 4-(7-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2- ylanilino)phenoxymethyl)benzene, has …

Modis Snow-Cover Products, Dorothy K. Hall, George A. Riggs, Vincent V. Salomonson, Nicolo E. Digirolamo, Klaus J. Bayr

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

On December 18, 1999, the Terra satellite was launched with a complement of five instruments including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Many geophysical products are derived from MODIS data including global snow-cover products. MODIS snow and ice products have been available through the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) since September 13, 2000. MODIS snow-cover products represent potential improvement to or enhancement of the currently available operational products mainly because the MODIS products are global and 500-m resolution, and have the capability to separate most snow and clouds. The MODIS snow-mapping algorithms are …

Entropy Splitting For High-Order Numerical Simulation Of Compressible Turbulence, N. D. Sandham, Q. Li, Helen C. Yee

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

A stable high-order numerical scheme for direct numerical simulation (DNS) of shock-free compressible turbulence is presented. The method is applicable to general geometries. It contains no upwinding, artificial dissipation, or filtering. Instead the method relies on the stabilizing mechanisms of an appropriate conditioning of the governing equations and the use of compatible spatial difference operators for the interior points (interior scheme) as well as the boundary points (boundary scheme). An entropy-splitting approach splits the inviscid flux derivatives into conservative and nonconservative portions. The spatial difference operators satisfy a summationby- parts condition, leading to a stable scheme (combined interior and boundary …
