Exploring Faultlines, Conflict, Satisfaction, And Stress In Groups Of Peacekeepers, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn, Martin Euwema, Nicolien Kop

Psychology

We explore group faultlines in peacekeeping troops on missions between 1995 and 1999 in Bosnia. Group faultlines are defined as hypothetical dividing lines that split a group into subgroups based on demographic characteristics (e.g. age, gender, etc.), culture, norms, work attitudes, and behavior of peacekeepers. In particular, we examine how potential faultlines become active faultlines and then result in task, relationship, and cultural conflict within a group of peacekeepers. We link these types of conflict to peacekeepers' satisfaction, perceived performance, and level of work stress. We test our hypotheses on survey data from a sample of 907 Dutch military peacekeepers …

The Effect Of Toxic Microcystis Aeruginosa On Four Different Populations Of Daphnia, Melanie L. Blanchette, James F. Haney Jan 2002

The Effect Of Toxic Microcystis Aeruginosa On Four Different Populations Of Daphnia, Melanie L. Blanchette, James F. Haney

Center for Freshwater Biology

Cyanobacteria reduce the fitness of many Daphnia species, and blooms in eutrophic lakes may place strong selective pressure upon these primary consumers. This study examines the ability of daphnids to resist the deleterious effects of toxic Microcystis and determine if this resistance is related to the trophic conditions of their native lakes. Three populations of Daphnia pulex/pulicaria were examined; D. pulicaria from eutrophic Klamath Lake in Oregon, D. pulex from eutrophic Old Durham Reservoir in New Hampshire, and D. pulicaria from oligotrophic Russell Pond in New Hampshire. D. carinata from meso-oligotrophic Lake Rotoaira in New Zealand was used as a …

The Fundamental Study Of Polyvinylidene Fluoride (Pvdf) And Its Application In A Pyroelectric Ir Sensor Device, Marcel Benz Jan 2002

The Fundamental Study Of Polyvinylidene Fluoride (Pvdf) And Its Application In A Pyroelectric Ir Sensor Device, Marcel Benz

Open Access Dissertations

The object of this research project was to find fabrication methods of pyroelectric devices for an infrared sensor using poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer thin films. It is anticipated that such sensors will lead to IR cameras with improved sensitivity and reduced production costs compared to currently available technology. This concept had originated in collaboration with Teltron Technologies, Inc., a display manufacturing company in Pennsylvania. In order to succeed with the predicted polymer application a profound general research study on PVDF was undertaken. Initially the work focused on the preparation of PVDF thin polymer films. Solution deposition from an acetone/N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) …

Theistic Activism And The Euthyphro Dilemma, David Baggett Jan 2002

Theistic Activism And The Euthyphro Dilemma, David Baggett

Faculty Dissertations

My dissertation focuses on the Euthyphro question, from one of the Socratic dialogues, understood in terms of the following dilemma posed against theistic ethics: (1) Either what is good/right is moral because God commands it, or it is not. (2) If what is good/right is moral because God commands it, then the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous. (3) If what is good/right is moral for reasons other than that God commands it, then God is superfluous from the standpoint of morality. (4) So, either the good/right is arbitrary and vacuous or God is superfluous to morality.

The dilemma is really …

A Friend Of Edward's: Identity, Homosexuality, And The Literature Of Edward Ii, 1300-1630, Michael Gary Cornelius Jan 2002

A Friend Of Edward's: Identity, Homosexuality, And The Literature Of Edward Ii, 1300-1630, Michael Gary Cornelius

Open Access Dissertations

England's King Edward II is a figure handed down throughout history largely because of his same-sex relationships. Medieval and Renaissance authors did not choose to write about Edward II in spite of his same-sex desires, but, rather, because of them; in essence, to explore issues surrounding same-sex relationships, these writers chose Edward II as their representational figure because his name was already inextricably linked with these desires. In doing so, these authors--including Adam Davy, John Lydgate, John Barbour, Christopher Marlowe, Michael Drayton, Francis Hubert, and Elizabeth Cary--create a genre of queer literature that extends back seven centuries and that, in …

Analysis And Simulation Of Skeletonema Costatum (Grev.) Cleve Annual Abundance Patterns In Lower Narragansett Bay 1959 To 1996, David Gerald Borkman Jan 2002

Analysis And Simulation Of Skeletonema Costatum (Grev.) Cleve Annual Abundance Patterns In Lower Narragansett Bay 1959 To 1996, David Gerald Borkman

Open Access Dissertations

A 38-year time series (1959 to 1996) of weekly observations of abundance of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum and related plankton habitat parameters in lower Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island was analyzed. A phytoplankton growth model was then developed for investigation of Skeletonema annual abundance pattern regulating mechanisms. A ca. 45% decline in Skeletonema abundance was detected, from 2,292 cells ml−1 (prior to September 1974) to 1,263 cells ml−1 (after August 1980). Winter-spring decreases were greatest, with declines in March Skeletonema abundance from near 3,400 cells ml−1 before a 1977 change-point to mean abundance of ca. 1,000 cells ml−1 after 1977. …

The Value Of Achievement And Responses To The Work Environment, Cheryl L. Adkins, Stefanie E. Naumann Jan 2002

The Value Of Achievement And Responses To The Work Environment, Cheryl L. Adkins, Stefanie E. Naumann

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

The value of achievement has long been thought to relate to job performance; however, we still do not fully understand the process through which this occurs. The present study examined the relationship between achievement and responses to the work environment. Five-hundred-twenty- four sales and service agents at a major firm in the transportation industry participated in the study. Achievement was positively related to perceptions of the work environment, satisfaction with intrinsic aspects of the job, job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and performance. The findings suggest that achievement may serve as a “lens” through which the work environment is viewed.
