The Case Method: An Enhancement To Curriculum In Aviation Management Course Work, D. Scott Worrells Jan 2002

The Case Method: An Enhancement To Curriculum In Aviation Management Course Work, D. Scott Worrells

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This study defines case method from a practical application perspective, in a specific aviation curriculum environment. A detailed discussion of the application of the case method in four courses in the Aviation Management department of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is provided. This discussion describes the evolution of the process first applied in the spring semester of 1996. A survey of student perceptions of the case method was conducted over a four-year period. The survey instrument, methodology, population, questions, and responses is discussed. Preliminary evaluation of the data indicates that student respondents "agree" …

Using Applied Behavior To Complement Error Management In Crew Resource Management Education, William G. Rantz Jan 2002

Using Applied Behavior To Complement Error Management In Crew Resource Management Education, William G. Rantz

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This paper examines the science of applied behavior analysis and its potential integration into current research and practice of threat and error management for internal crew behaviors. Discussions provide insight into how an Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) analysis of behavior can reveal to educators, the antecedents and consequences for at-risk crew behavior. This paper will redefine crew at-risk behaviors as anti-error behaviors that prevent internal error occurrence. This new perspective will complement and enhance the total threat-error process model. Finally the challenges and implications of using crew reinforcement to maintain anti-error behavior using modified line-oriented flight training (LOFT) will be discussed.

Military Versus Civilian Air Cargo Training For Hazardous Material, Bruce A. Rothwell, Wayne Harsha, Theodore Clever Jan 2002

Military Versus Civilian Air Cargo Training For Hazardous Material, Bruce A. Rothwell, Wayne Harsha, Theodore Clever

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This paper addressed differences in the way air cargo handlers are trained in the military and civilian sectors. The paper reviewed the training process and determined which provided the most knowledgeable graduates. A brief review of the history of hazardous material accidents and incidents was presented to demonstrate the need for continuous and effective training. The main body of the paper addressed current directives and the current status of the industry. The researchers collected information from military and civilians who were actively involved in the air transportation of hazardous materials. These data were then used to test specific hypotheses concerning …

Stress Coping Strategies For Commercial Flight Crewmembers, Willem J. Homan Jan 2002

Stress Coping Strategies For Commercial Flight Crewmembers, Willem J. Homan

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This paper provides a selective examination of the current stress management literature and its practices. The author introduces strategies that can be utilized by commercial pilots to handle stressful events in the often-challenging flight environment and establishes a foundation for further empirical research in the area of human stress control in aviation settings. Stress management techniques adopted from sport psychology and management training programs are reviewed. First, stress and distress are defined and the physical, physiological, and emotional responses to stress are discussed. This is followed by an overview of the biology of stress. Next, traditional forms of stress avoidance …

Market Power In Chinese Taipei: Laws, Policies And Treatments, Kung-Chung Liu, Yun-Peng Chu Jan 2002

Market Power In Chinese Taipei: Laws, Policies And Treatments, Kung-Chung Liu, Yun-Peng Chu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The experience of Chinese Taipei shows that opening up a previously protected market to new entrants can be a more effective and reliable way to enhance competition than regulating the behavior of dominant or monopolistic firms. Moreover, when opening up the market, the liberalizing measures adopted by government should be market-structure-neutral. That is, it should not try to dictate the direction and results of market competition. A more pressure-resistant mechanism should be designed to deal with market power, taking the form of a regime that is cross-sector, independent and collective in its decision-making, such as has been the case with …

Bridal Veil Mill Site: A Plan For Restoration, Bruce Barnett, Richard Friday, Elizabeth Freeston, Raef Porter, Laurie Shiels

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

Founded in 1972, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) is a national non-profit organization that works to protect land for its natural, scenic, and recreational values as parks and open space. One way that TPL accomplishes this is through holding property temporarily until the land can be permanently protected by a government agency or a community land trust.

In 1990, TPL purchased a 34-acre property located near Bridal Veil Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. The Bridal Veil mill site property has a lengthy history dating back to 1886. The site was first used for a paper mill. Later, a …

Ethics In Journalism And Cheryl Kernot: A Colloquium, Rhonda Breit, John Harrison, Martin Hirst, Trina Mclellan, Desley Bartlett

Graduate School of Media and Communications

Ethics asks the 'ought' question. Ought Laurie Oakes have disclosed Cheryl Kernot's affair with Gareth Evans? Ought the affair be taken into account in any assessment of Kernot's motives for defecting to the ALP? Ought Kernot have disclosed the affair to ALP leaders before her defection? Ought Kernot have omitted the affair from her memoir? Ought politicians' private lives be paraded in public? Ought journalists re-consider their treatment of high-profile women in public life? All these issues and more are discussed in the colloquium below.
