Evaluating A Medical Error Taxonomy, Juliana Brixey, Todd R. Johnson, Jiajie Zhang Jan 2002

Evaluating A Medical Error Taxonomy, Juliana Brixey, Todd R. Johnson, Jiajie Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Healthcare has been slow in using human factors principles to reduce medical errors. The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) recognizes that a lack of attention to human factors during product development may lead to errors that have the potential for patient injury, or even death. In response to the need for reducing medication errors, the National Coordinating Council for Medication Errors Reporting and Prevention (NCC MERP) released the NCC MERP taxonomy that provides a standard language for reporting medication errors. This project maps the NCC MERP taxonomy of medication error to MedWatch medical errors involving infusion pumps. Of …

Anti-Minority Riots In Unified Germany: Cultural Conflicts And Mischanneled Political Participation, Roger Karapin Jan 2002

Anti-Minority Riots In Unified Germany: Cultural Conflicts And Mischanneled Political Participation, Roger Karapin

Publications and Research

Anti-foreigner riots in eastern Germany in the early 1990s have usually been explained by ethnonationalism or racism, ethnic competition for scarce resources, and opportunistic political elites. If anti-minority riots are analyzed as a distinct phenomenon with a cross-sectional approach, local political processes emerge as more important causes. Cultural conflicts, the channeling of mobilization from nonviolent into violent forms, local political opportunities for success, and mobilization by social movement organizations convert ethnic conflict and violence into riots. A comparison of riot and non-riot localities in eastern Germany supports this argument.

Effect Of Ph And Temperature On Conformational Changes Of A Humanized Monoclonal Antibody, Sejal Gandhi Jan 2002

Effect Of Ph And Temperature On Conformational Changes Of A Humanized Monoclonal Antibody, Sejal Gandhi

Open Access Master's Theses

Maintenance of the structural integrity of a therapeutic protein is essential for its efficacy in relation to physiological and pharmacological activity. Therefore, a major challenge confronting the pharmaceutical scientist working with protein formulation is the instability of the protein during processing, handling, storage, and use. Hence well-defined preformulation studies for proteins need to be performed to understand the stability issues relevant to their production, formulation, and use. Vast numbers of drugs available in the market are rnicromolecular dugs, which have molecular weight less than 1000 D. There is a good reason to believe that polypeptides and proteins offer different challenges …

Moisture Interactions With Pharmaceuticalpol Ymerjc Film Coatings, Ravi S. Pappu Jan 2002

Moisture Interactions With Pharmaceuticalpol Ymerjc Film Coatings, Ravi S. Pappu

Open Access Master's Theses

It is a well-known fact that water can act as a detrimental variable in performance of pharmaceutical dosage forms. Derivatives of various starches and cellulose are widely used as excepients, generally in high proportions to the total amount making up the dosage form. A complete understanding of the uptake of moisture by cellulose polymers is important because moisture-polymer interaction affects various properties such as compressibility and stability. In this study I) hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), 2) modified HPMC (SEPPIC®), 3) microcrystaline cellulose containing carrageenan (Lusterclear®) were used for studies of moisture polymer interaction. The interaction of moisture …

The double spin asymmetry in the →e→p → e' π+n reaction has been measured for the first time in the resonance region for four-momentum transfer Q2 = 0.35-1.5 GeV2. Data were taken at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS detector using a 2.6 GeV polarized electron beam incident on a polarized solid NH3 target. Comparison with predictions of phenomenological models shows strong sensitivity to resonance contributions. Helicity-1/2 transitions are found to be dominant in the second and third resonance regions. The measured asymmetry is consistent with a faster rise with Q2 …

Microstructure Determination In A Self Assembled Surfacant System Formed By Aot/Lecithin/Isooctane And Water, Vivek Agarwal Jan 2002

Microstructure Determination In A Self Assembled Surfacant System Formed By Aot/Lecithin/Isooctane And Water, Vivek Agarwal

Open Access Master's Theses

We have observed a novel transformation from a microemulsion to a gel phase by increasing the water content of a system consisting of bis(2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT), phosphatidycholine(lecithin), and 2,2,4 -trimethylpentane (isooctane). The viscosity increases by six orders of magnitude and a rigid gel forms as the water content is increased above a specific threshold. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on this surfactant mesophase reveal the microstructure as columnar hexagonal at lower water contents and temperatures, and lamellar at higher water contents and temperatures. SANS is also able to capture the transition between these two structures. These structures are …

Alternative Corrosion Coating- Their Effect And Influence On Adhesive Performance, Khaled Alawadhi Jan 2002

Alternative Corrosion Coating- Their Effect And Influence On Adhesive Performance, Khaled Alawadhi

Open Access Master's Theses

The corrosion behavior of Cr2O3 and TiO2 based surface treatments in 0.5N NaCl solution was investigated. These surface treatments are used for adhesive bonding of SS3 l 6L both to itself, other metals and non-metals. In order to quantify corrosion behavior and determine their ability to passivate in a chloride environment, a poteniodynamic test was employed.

To measure the adhesive strength of bonds using the different surface treatments, a standard test method, ASTM D 1002, was used. This measured the apparent shear strength of single lap joints made by adhesively bonding metals specimens together. A general-purpose …

Information Technologies For The Healthcare Delivery System, Gary Scialdone Jan 2002

Information Technologies For The Healthcare Delivery System, Gary Scialdone

That modern healthcare requires information technology to be efficient and fully effective is evident if one spends any time observing the delivery of institutional health care. Consider the observation of a practitioner of the discipline, David M. Eddy, MD, PhD, voiced in Clinical Decision Making, JAMA 263:1265-75, 1990, ". . .All confirm what would be expected from common sense: The complexity of modern medicine exceeds the inherent limitations of the unaided human mind." The goal of this thesis is to identify the technological factors that are required to enable a fully sufficient application of information technology (IT) to the modern …

Efficient Utilization Of Fine-Grained Parallelism Using A Microheterogeneous Environment, William L. Scheidel Jan 2002

Efficient Utilization Of Fine-Grained Parallelism Using A Microheterogeneous Environment, William L. Scheidel

Theses

The goal of this thesis is to propose a new computing paradigm, called micro- Heterogeneous computing or mHC, which incorporates PCI (or other high speed local system bus) based processing elements (vector processors, digital signal processors, etc) into a general purpose machine. In this manner the benefits of heterogeneous computing on scientific applications can be achieved while avoiding some of the lim itations. Overall performance is increased by exploiting fine-grained parallelism on the most efficient architecture available, while reducing the high communication over head and costs of traditional heterogeneous environments. Furthermore, mHC based machines can be combined into a cluster, …

Evaluating And Monitoring Nucleation And Growth In Copper Foil, Ye Kun Lee, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electrodeposition of copper foil for use in electronic materials applications is a complex and demanding process. The specific aspects of producing and controlling the structure-property-performance requirements of the foil are important because of the stringent demands placed on their use in printed circuit boards and similar products. In this paper, a brief review of the electrodeposition process for raw copper foil is presented. Since electrolyte additives play such a significant role in the copper-deposition process, the effects of two essential additives, chloride ion and an organic (e.g., glue or gelatine), on the foil are described. Also, the influence of …

Deep Structures Wet Etched Into Lithium Niobate Using A Physical Mask, Andrew Randles Jan 2002

Deep Structures Wet Etched Into Lithium Niobate Using A Physical Mask, Andrew Randles

Theses

The present work is an investigation and characterization of a new technique for etching and masking Lithium niobate (LiNb03) to realize high aspect ratio trenches. LiNb03 is a single crystal optically clear (from 350 nm to 5 micometer wavelength), piezoelectric material. It is also inert to most reactants and has a high curie temperature (the temperature that a material loses its piezoelectric effect). These properties allow LiNb03 to be used as a sensor or actuator in harsh environments. To realize this actuator/sensor a multilevel lithium niobate deep etching technique is currently unavailable. The present work uses a chrome gold mask …

Experimental Evaluation Of Impulse Turbine Designs For Chain Testing Systems, Aaron Donlon Jan 2002

Experimental Evaluation Of Impulse Turbine Designs For Chain Testing Systems, Aaron Donlon

Theses

There are several ways to test automotive timing chains for wear in a laboratory environment. One novel method proposed by Borg-Warner Morse TEC uses fluid jets striking an impeller blade. The momentum of the oil striking and deflected by the impeller blade is used to produce a torque. This torque is transmitted to the system through the timing chain. A previous theoretical design study (conducted elsewhere) evaluated some of the design factors as they related to machine performance and ultimately to the torque loads applied to the chain. From this theoretical study came the design for two novel bucket and …

A Global Sensitivity Analysis Of Photochemical Models Used For Predicting Tropospheric Ozone, Daniel Wimer Jan 2002

A Global Sensitivity Analysis Of Photochemical Models Used For Predicting Tropospheric Ozone, Daniel Wimer

Theses

The Clean Air Act requires the use of complex photochemical models to predict future ozone concentrations and the impact of current and future regulations. In many instances uncertainty in the data input parameters used to operate these models results in uncertainty in the prediction of future air quality. The degree of this uncertainty is often greater than the degreee of air quality improvements proposed by regulations. This study evaluates the sensitivity of a photochemical model to predict future ozone air quality with respect to the uncertainty of several critical input parameters. These parameters are: Transported ozone (ozone aloft) Biogenic emissions …
